Surnames: APPLEGATE; MURROW; WALLINGFORD; BOOZE Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/WBB.2ACI/2950.2.1 Message Board Post: Clarinda APPLEGATE was b. 29 Apr 1826 in Mason Co., KY (per her obit); m. 23 Mar 1844 in either Vermillion Co., IL or IN to David Blue MURROW (who descends from the WALLINGFORDS). 8 children were born to this union. He d. 24 Mar 1863 in Paducah, KY (from sickness in the Civil War). She (2) m. 1 Nov 1863 in Poweshiek Co., IA James BOOZE. They had one child, Florence and divorced. She d. 4 Apr 1892 in Poweshiek Co. and a quite lenghty obit was published but did not mention parents. Several years ago a researcher gave her parents as Joseph and Lavina APPLEGATE. He d. 1880's in Poweshiek Co., but documentary evidence disproves them quite easily. I think it was assumed he was her father as he was the only elder APPLEGATE in that area at the time. I have not been able to find any APPLEGATE links in IA, IN or IL, so in looking at the 1830 census for Mason Co., KY I find the families of Benjamin and Mary(likely widowed) both wth 2 females under 5. I have no proof that Clar! inda's family was stiil in Mason Co. or not in 1830. Her obit does NOT mention siblings either. Many have seemed to have accepted the parents mentioned earlier, although wrong.

Prudence was allegedly a daughter of Benjamin and Prudence Wallingford. Direct evidence of the marriage of Jacob Applegate to Prudence Wallingford and of the relationship between Prudence Applegate to Benjamin Wallingford is lacking. Some of the Wallingfords & Coopers migrated to Dearborn County, IN--mostly the part that later became Ohio Co in the 1840s. I have more tidbits but won't go into all that here. I have not done as much work on the Coopers as I have done on the Wallingfords. The Coopers are not in my direct line, however, I can't help getting into them as they are closely tied to the Wallingfords in KY & Ohio Co, IN. I do not know who Jesse Cooper's father was, however, it would appear from the marriage consent I mentioned above that his mother was Elizabeth Cooper. I have a transcript of Malinda's Cooper Jenkins' death record and it states Malinda was born in Maysville, KY. Since Jesse Cooper and Mary Applegate were married in Mason Co in 1806, it would appear that Malinda was indeed born there. I believe Jesse Cooper was enumerated on the 1810 census in Mason Co but I don't have the citation handy. There are Applegates EVERYWHERE and many of them use the same names, Benjamin, Richard, Daniel, etc. There is a lot of misinformation on them on the net so be careful about using any info you find, especially if it is not documented. 3. No info, but what a pleasant coincidence! My daughter's name is Mahala. She was named for my Dad's great-aunt, Mahala Hawkins Shields, born 1856, died 1933, the daughter of Moses R. and Martha Nickell Hawkins, and wife of William Shields. People always comment, saying what a pretty and unusual name my daughter has, to which I reply that the name was quite popular for little girls in Ky in the early and mid-19th century. There were several Mahalas in both my mother's and father's families.
