I am interested in the Jones family who lived there about the same time. My ancestor was Polly Jones and she married Valentine Leonard in Maysville 2/27/1793. Consent was given by a George Jones (likely her father) but I haven't found any informaton on him so far. Valentine Leonard was held captive by the Indians from 1785-1788. His parents were John Peter Leonard and Barbara Hege: both were killed by Indians in Mason Co. in 1785. They immigrated with Boone from Rowan Co., NC. I see that you are researching Jones families in the area--do you anything of this family? Thanks for your time---ERIC
This looks like a death certificate, not an obituary. You can order a 1940 death certificate for $6 from the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services, Office of Vital Statistics. Their address is: 275 East Main Street, Frankfort, KY 40621. The agency's website has complete instructions at: http://chfs.ky.gov/dph/vital/deathcert.htm<http://chfs.ky.gov/dph/vital/deathcert.htm> Old newspaper obituaries are a bit harder to track down. In general, newspapers will help with recent obits, but they don't search their old files for genealogy purposes. The University of Kentucky is the official repository of historic newspapers for Kentucky. UK doesn't do lookups either, but they will sell you the roll of microfilm that the issue you want is on. The UK newspaper project is at: http://www.uky.edu/Libraries/repropm.html<http://www.uky.edu/Libraries/repropm.html> If the Kentucky Historical Society or Mason County Museum have historic newspaper collections, I'm not aware of it. Hope this helps. There's at least a couple of good options to find that. Contact the Mason co. museum to see if they've got copies of the obit: http://www.masoncountymuseum.org/articles/home.asp Or get the appropriate newspaper film through UKY: http://www.kygenweb.net/ukfilm/index.html I guess a third choice would be to contact the newspaper offices in Maysville and ask if they have it.

Clarinda applied for a pension on David Murrow's Civil War service. I have seen and taken notes from the file, but I do not have any photocopies. As I recall, Nicholas Applegate vouched for the marriage of Clarinda and David. I have looked high and low for that marriage and it's not to be found in Indiana or Illinois. It may have never been recorded, although there should have been a license. I saw on another of your posts that you have tried to get it from the Archives but they couldn't find the file. It's my experience that if you try 2 or 3 times, eventually someone will find it. I will make an attempt to get back to the Archives in the next few weeks to look at it again. I leave for vacation on Friday so it will have to be after I return. It will take me some time go through all my data, however, I believe the Benjamin Applegate you describe is the same Benjamin Applegate who died in Brown Co, OH in the 1840s. His wife was Rebecca Wall. I know of two of their children and they were both born in Mason Co, KY according to separate biographies in Beers' History of Brown Co, OH (1883). This Benjamin served in the War of 1812 and his widow applied for a pension. As far as the Mary Applegate, I need to do some more digging on her. I took a quick look at the Mason Co tax records for the years 1827-1830 but didn't see anyone who might have been Mary's husband. It was a very quick look though, so I may have missed something. I will have to those over again more carefully.

Although he was not a soldier, Benjamin Wallingford collected and provided supplies for Virginia soldiers during the Revolution. As such, his descendants qualify for membership in the DAR. The problem with Benjamin is that he didn't leave a will or own any land. No Bible record has survived either. Nevertheless, several of his children, (Mark, Joseph, Nicholas, Richard, Sarah & Elizabeth) can be proven easily through alternative sources. The others, (Martha, Prudence, Rebecca & Phebe) are more difficult. I believe I could probably piece together enough circumstantial evidence to prove to the DAR that the last four were Benjamin's as well. I am from Indiana originally, and get back there once or twice a year. I just never seem to have time to do genealogy when I'm there as it's usually over a holiday or family gathering. I have been to Ohio County doing researching on one occasion, but I've also got a lot of info at the Indiana State Library (before I left Indiana). I only recently learned of the Jesse Cooper family's migration to Ohio Co so I'm eager to get back there and do some research. I believe another of Jesse & Mary's children was Basil Cooper. Basil married Mary Wallingford, probably in Gallatin Co, IL or Dearborn Co, IN. Anyway, in 1850, Basil Cooper's household included a Mary Cooper, age 68 b VA (Dist 2, Oh Co IN p 344). Jesse is buried in the Cooper Cemetery, which is where Basil is buried. Basil named one of his sons Jesse.
We're always looking for new members! Since your aunt was eligible for DAR, would not you be eligible, too? All you would need is the proper documentation to meet DAR standards, i.e., birth certificates, death certificates, or copies of family bible information, etc., and you could file through the nearest chapter to where you reside. Contact them for information. Good luck! Some stayed in sw PA area. James was from not sure .. Lived in Greene prior to move to OH. He left a brother in Greene Co and other kin I have lots of Stewart inter links Our Family Histories look at some of this Susi
Dear Karen: I received a reply from Susi who is interested in information on Thomas Evan...are you two in touch? I don't have any Evans in my Stewart line. But I am still trying to confirm Joseph Stewart in the Tenmile Country before the Stewarts emigrated to Limestone. I think they were in Morgan Township, Washington Co. PA and were there as early as 1784. I suspect that they emigrated to the Tenmile from Passaic River Valley along with a number of other families (exactly when, I don't know). These Stewarts originally arrived in America in 1730 -1735. Stewart Brown
Dear Susi: No I don't have Thomas Evan in my personal family files...but I will watch for him as I research the Tenmile Country. My mother's family, Joseph and Levinah Stewart traveled with four other families from Bradock, PA in 1790 by keel boat to Limesstone. I do not know who those other families were, though they may have included: Rains, Cambells, Grays, Brookovers, Jacobs. These are all families that were in close association early after their arrival in Kentucky and Ohio. Stewart Brown
Then as a STOUT we are related.. :>) Susi
I find that interesting post Due you have THOMAS EVans in your files she married into my Huffman lineage in Greene Co PA ... Have story on his life.. Susi
