    1. [KYMARSHA-L] Miscellaneous Text Files - Calloway County Physicians' Register - Book 1
    2. Bill Utterback
    3. My friends - I am dropping by today to let you know that I have prepared another text file from those contained in the many floppy disks which I have accumulated over the years, concerning the JP area. This one is the first Physicians' Registry Book for Calloway County. It covers the period of 1887 - ca. 1893, although there is one registration dated 1897. By way of background(and those of you with tenure on the JP List will recall my earlier discussion of this), starting in 1874, the State of KY began requiring more education for its medical people, and this trend continued in the 1880's and beyond, with the requirements become ever more stringent. The earliest form of "licensing" for medical men was this registration format. For those physicians who had been in practice for 10 or more years prior to 1874, a "grandfather clause" was included which exempted these men from the new educational requirements, and you will see some statements scattered among the registrations by the older physicians as they attest to the fact that they were in practice 10 years prior to 1874 and are, therefore, exempt from the requirements, but they still had to register if they wished to continue to practice medicine. The items you will see in this text file include the name of the physician, the college which issued the diploma to the physician, the date of the diploma, the age of the physician on the date of registration, where they man was born, where he resides, the date of registration and the type of medicine he practices(allopathic/regular - what we know today as an "M.D", or eclectic, which had some of the philosophy of the current osteopathic approach to medicine). Listed below are the names of the physicians contained in this file. If you see a name of interest, and would like a copy of the file, let me know and I will get it to you. I will send it by e-mail attachment unless you specify straight e-mail(which tends to skew the columnar alignments). *Please note* that time constraints will not allow me to separate out individual names from this file. You will receive the complete text file, with all of the physicians' names and info in it and you can then edit it as you may wish. Some of these physicians practiced in other counties besides Calloway, and the older ones, in their grandfathering statement, give the counties in which they have practiced. -B =========================================================== Physicians Register Book 1 Calloway County Alexander, Luther L.
