My friends - I have today transcribed records from the Marshall County Tavern Keepers Bond Book and created a plain text file for them(which took about an hour longer on this little laptop than if I had had my primary machine available, but it did get done). Tavern Keepers, among others, had to get a license to operate, and had to post bond to insure the proper operation of their business for the public good. This file begins with the text of the bond document itself, for informational purposes, followed by the names of the tavern keepers, the location of the tavern, the name of the surety(ies) and the date of the bond. These sorts of documents are seldom used by genealogists, but they can sometimes give good clues. If we look at the file from this book in Marshall County, we find one bond going to "M.L. Williams & R.K.Williams, Jr." Later, when another renewal bond was posted, it went to "M.L.Williams *and brother*". That might very well be the only proof someone might get of the relationship of M.L. & R.K.Williams. These documents also give clues about where in the County a person resided - they would not reside 10 miles away from their place of business - they usually resided within it or next door. The sort of information contained in these Tavern Keepers Bone Books is also historical in nature - it gives us an insight into the occupations of our progenitors. The tavern keepers names covered in this file include: Robert M. Clark Alexander Anderson C.E.Miller A.F.Burnham Jesse Reeder John S. Miller L.W.Graddy N.B.Roach Martin F. Burnham M.L.Williams & R.K.Williams, Jr. J.T.Stephens James K. Wilson John H. Dix A.A.Nelson Harrison Johnston James Evans M.T.Williams & Brother Jonathan Ellis H.Johnston James S.Locker James Edwards A.A.Nelson W.D.Covington T.J.Lathan H.L.Minter E.H.Pace L.R.Finley L.M.Robertson R.D.hughes William Price O.Walsdrop C.H.Price John R. Troutt T.M.Robertson G.W.Wyatt D.D.Hughes D[avid] C. Savell[s] If you would like a copy of this text file, let me know and I will get it to you. I will send it as a plain text attachment to an e-mail message unless you specify that you need it by straight e-mail(which often skews the columnar alignments). Please note that you will receive the complete file. Time constraints do not allow me to go into the file and extract individual data. You can edit out any portions that you do not need.As always, please do not resend this entire message back to me with your request. -B ============================================================
