My friends - I am stopping by to let you know that I now have another segment in the JP Land Grants text file series ready. This one covers all surnames which begin with "O". If you would like a copy of the file, let me know and I will get it to you. Please request the "OLG file". I will send it as a plain text attachment to an e-mail message, unless you specify that you need it as a straight e-mail without attachment(which often skews the columnar alignments). Please *note* that you will receive the entire file - time constraints do not permit me to go into the file and extract the data for individual surnames. The surnames covered in this segment are: Oates, Odom, Ogden, Oglevie/Oglevice/Oglilvie, Oliver, Oldham, O'Neal, Orr, Orton, Osbourne, Ote, Outland, Overby, Owen(s) and Owings. My friends - I have now received word from RootsWeb that the KYJacksonPurchase-Lore List has been created, and is operational. We're now ready to go, on that List, for family stories, regional lore, and more of the "homespun" type of posts that would be off-topic for this List. We'll retain our genealogical focus here, and have the Lore List for the exchange of those many other things that make genealogy come alive - Civil War stories, family diaries, and the many other things that make people out of these names and dates we all have in our files. The Lore List will have few guidelines - no off-topic posts(i.e., posts about happenings in some county or area outside the JP region, for example); no virus warnings posted to the List, no attachments, and the usual no-flaming rule. This is going to be a very informal List, and I will do more monitoring than posting to it. I hope it proves to be useful to everyone who uses it. The subscription routine is the usual one: send a message to KYJacksonPurchase-Lore-L-request@rootsweb.com, with nothing in the subject field and only the word Subscribe in the message area. If you would rather be on the digest mode, substitute the letter "D" for the letter "L" in the address string(.e.g., KYJacksonPurchase-Lore-D-request...etc.). For subscribing only, that word "request' has to be in the address string(but it's not used for posting messages to the list). That will get you subscribed. I'll probably post a kick-off message after we have 15 or 20 people subscribed, but I suspect such will be unnecessary since most of our subscribers will be coming from one of the lists I host. I'll be back later with this week's land grants file and, hopefully, that "special" file from Graves County. -B ===========================================================
My friends - I am dropping by today to let you know that I have now completed transcribing and entering into a text file the second half of the Marshall County Tavern Keepers Bond Book, which covers the period 1867 - 1882. Tavern Keepers surnames included in this second half of the file include Timmons, Convington, Edwards, Robertson, Phillips, McCawley, Savill(s), Birdwell, Jones, Barry, Barnhart, Cox, Williams, Cochran, Curd, Simmons, Stilley, Duvall, Morris, Travis, Long, Minter, Tyson, Heath, Smith, Kline, Johnson and Waller. Also, I now have the JP land grants for the surname "V" ready. This file includes all of the surnames which begin with "V", and which are: Vaugh(a)n, Vance, Vancleave, Vanclevan, Vanpool, Vangrifft, Veil, Veach, Vincent, Vinson, Via, Violett and Virgin. If you would like a copy of either - or both - files, let me know and I will get it to you. I will send it as a plain text attachment to an e-mail message, unless you specify that you need it as a straight e-mail message(which tends to skew the columnar alignments). In the case of the Tavern Keepers file, ask for Tavern Keepers # 2 file, and in the case of the JP land grants file, just ask for the JP Grants "V" file, since it is complete and will stand alone. Please note that you will receive the complete file in each case - time constraints will not allow me to go into these files and extract the data for a single surname or two. I'll be back later with the solution to the Skills Puzzler, for those of you on the JP List. We've only had 4 responses on this one so far, so I'll wait until those in Digest mode have received their copy of the Puzzler before posting the answer. Hi, I am Tammy and I am researching Washburn, Tiller, Fowler, Stalls, Johnson,& Barrow. My brick wall is finding anything on my Great-grandmother Jane Tiller. She was born Mary Jane Washburn in 1879 to Glover & Elizabeth (Thornton) Washburn. She went by the name Jane, she married James Fowler in 1901 they had the following children, Mertie (died young in a fire) Pearl G Who married Pearl B Stalls, and Robert G. When Mr. Fowler died in 1909, Jane then married to Henry Tiller April 1910, Henry & Jane had my grandfather Curtis Tiller. Now by the time of the 1920 census Jane has divorced Henry and gone back to using the name Fowler. My grandfather said she died when he was about 10 yrs. old so that would have been after the census taken in January 1920. (Marshall County). My problem is I can find no marriage record for Jane & Henry, nor can I find a death record for Jane or a place of burial. I have looked under Mary Jane Fowler & Tiller & Washburn, no luck. If anyone can help me with this family I would be ever so grateful. Tammy Clark NW Indiana
My friends - I have today transcribed records from the Marshall County Tavern Keepers Bond Book and created a plain text file for them(which took about an hour longer on this little laptop than if I had had my primary machine available, but it did get done). Tavern Keepers, among others, had to get a license to operate, and had to post bond to insure the proper operation of their business for the public good. This file begins with the text of the bond document itself, for informational purposes, followed by the names of the tavern keepers, the location of the tavern, the name of the surety(ies) and the date of the bond. These sorts of documents are seldom used by genealogists, but they can sometimes give good clues. If we look at the file from this book in Marshall County, we find one bond going to "M.L. Williams & R.K.Williams, Jr." Later, when another renewal bond was posted, it went to "M.L.Williams *and brother*". That might very well be the only proof someone might get of the relationship of M.L. & R.K.Williams. These documents also give clues about where in the County a person resided - they would not reside 10 miles away from their place of business - they usually resided within it or next door. The sort of information contained in these Tavern Keepers Bone Books is also historical in nature - it gives us an insight into the occupations of our progenitors. The tavern keepers names covered in this file include: Robert M. Clark Alexander Anderson C.E.Miller A.F.Burnham Jesse Reeder John S. Miller L.W.Graddy N.B.Roach Martin F. Burnham M.L.Williams & R.K.Williams, Jr. J.T.Stephens James K. Wilson John H. I will send it as a plain text attachment to an e-mail message unless you specify that you need it by straight e-mail(which often skews the columnar alignments). Please note that you will receive the complete file. Time constraints do not allow me to go into the file and extract individual data. You can edit out any portions that you do not need.As always, please do not resend this entire message back to me with your request. -B ============================================================
My friends - I now have another installment ready in our continuing review of the Grants West of the Tennessee River series, which covers land grants in the Jackson Purchase. This installment covers some more of the "C" surnames. Included in this group are the following surnames: Carr, Carrick, Caruthers, Carrol(l), Cates, Catlitt, Casey, Castleberry, Castor, Case, Cannon, Canada, Chapman, Chandler, Chambers, Chaney, Chappell and Cavitt. My friends - I am dropping by today to let you know that I have been working with some of the old floppy disks that I have accumulated over the years, which have a lot of "loose" JP data stored on them. I have found three text files which may of interest to some of you. These are all cemeteries in Calloway and Marshall counties. One file has the two Trevathan cemeteries in Calloway County. The surnames contained in this file include: Butler, Cleaver, Linn, Ellison, McQuaid, Trevathan, Thomas, Jackson, Paschall, Belcher, Boggess, Dailey, Diuguid, Duncan, Gilbert, Hindman, Holland, Penny, Rose, Stewart, Stone, Thomas and Wilkinson. The other two cemeteries(contained on one file) are in Marshall County and are the Benny Starks Cemetery and the Starks/Spencer Cemetery. Surnames in those cemeteries include: Cope, Darnell(one burial), Edwards, Elkins, Graves, Groves, Hurt, Mardis, McReynolds, Pace, Siress, Skaggs, Stark/Starks, Steen, Tynes, Washman, West, Bolen, Dowdy, Gardner, Henson, Hill, Phelps, Shilthrout, Thompson, Trimble and Wells. If you would like a copy of either, or both, files, let me know and I will get it to you. I will send it as an e-mail attachment, unless you specify that you need it in straight e-mail format. *Please note* that you will receive the complete file - time constraints won't allow me to go into these files and extract individual surnames and the data associated with them. When you receive the file, you can edit out any portions that are not applicable to your work. However, I always suggest retaining all burials in a cemetery - future research may prove that some of those names which seem unrelated now may turn out to be related later. I'll be back later today with another JP land grants text file. -B ===========================================================
My friends - I now have another installment ready in our continuing review of the Grants West of the Tennessee River series, which covers land grants in the Jackson Purchase. My friends - Tonight, we are going to return to our review of early Marshall County Marriages. In three previous posts on this subject, we had worked our way up to 1850, and we will continue with that year in this post. If you see a marriage which is of interest to you, and you would like the full dataset for that marriage(which usually includes the date of the marriage, the consents[if necessary], as well as the name(s) of witnesses and surety), let me know and I will get that information to you. I need to find some parents for Mr. Beverly Boyd? He was B. abt. 1813 & M. Martha (Patsy) Boyd (both were Boyds) on 26-Sept.-1829 in Christian Co. Ky. Martha also M. John Armstrong on 12-Sept-1852. Three of her children with Beverly were 1) Martha Ann B. abt. 1833(born 4 years after Beverly & Martha M. which makes me think that there are more children?) who M. John Messamore in 1849. 2)Keziah who M. Obadiah Ferrell in 1848. 3)Mary Ann (Polly)who M. Thomas Ferrell in 1850. Polly later M. a Jesse Carmack in Tx. & had 4 sons Mark,Tom,Jesse & John William (Billy). Beverly received a Ky. Land Grant (1822-1858)of 160 acres west of the Tennessee River in west central Marshal Co. Beverly was crippled (I don't know if he was B. that way or if it was due injury /sickness) & because of his disability he was exempted from paying taxes---Order Book G in Christian Co. Ky. A Mr. Beverly Boyd M. Zylasha Parkerson in McCracken Co. Ky, when he was 36 & in 1849. That makes him abt. the same age as the Beverly in Christian Co. Beverly was supposed to have died around 1840? It has been suggested that he divorced Martha & went to McCracken Co.? Some divorced records in Christian Co. Ky. would clear that up? But I can't do that because I live in south Fl. It is hoped that someone can find Beverly some parents & any info. would be appreciated. Tia Cardin Cardin Carmack ccarmack@peganet.com
A few days ago I requested info on a stagecoach inn that David Doom ran in Lyon Co.I have learned that the line (named Saline Line) started in Cadiz to Princeton to Fredonia & on to southern IL. with a feeder line running from Kutawa to Princeton & maybe from Marshal Co. or farther west to Kuttawa. I still haven't learned anything about my relative, David Doom (who lived in Carmack & owned land from old Kuttawa to the ferry) running the stage coach inn in Kuttawa but because the line started in Cadiz ( it is possible that the line came from Stewart Co. Tn. to Cadiz) I feel this will generate more interest & someone will come up with some answers, I hope. There are a number of ways the line could have traveled to southern IL. 1) one past the Old Tiline Mines 2 ) another one to the famous Hole In The Rock 3) another across from Smithland ? I wonder which route but most of all did David Doom have anything to do with it? His son, Ben, did have a license but I am told that David just ran it without a license? Any help will be appreciated. My friends - I am dropping by today to let you know that I have prepared another text file from those contained in the many floppy disks which I have accumulated over the years, concerning the JP area. This one is the first Physicians' Registry Book for Calloway County. It covers the period of 1887 - ca. 1893, although there is one registration dated 1897. By way of background(and those of you with tenure on the JP List will recall my earlier discussion of this), starting in 1874, the State of KY began requiring more education for its medical people, and this trend continued in the 1880's and beyond, with the requirements become ever more stringent. The earliest form of "licensing" for medical men was this registration format. For those physicians who had been in practice for 10 or more years prior to 1874, a "grandfather clause" was included which exempted these men from the new educational requirements, and you will see some statements scattered among the registrations by the older physicians as they attest to the fact that they were in practice 10 years prior to 1874 and are, therefore, exempt from the requirements, but they still had to register if they wished to continue to practice medicine. The items you will see in this text file include the name of the physician, the college which issued the diploma to the physician, the date of the diploma, the age of the physician on the date of registration, where they man was born, where he resides, the date of registration and the type of medicine he practices(allopathic/regular - what we know today as an "M.D", or eclectic, which had some of the philosophy of the current osteopathic approach to medicine). Listed below are the names of the physicians contained in this file. If you see a name of interest, and would like a copy of the file, let me know and I will get it to you. I will send it by e-mail attachment unless you specify straight e-mail(which tends to skew the columnar alignments). *Please note* that time constraints will not allow me to separate out individual names from this file. You will receive the complete text file, with all of the physicians' names and info in it and you can then edit it as you may wish. Some of these physicians practiced in other counties besides Calloway, and the older ones, in their grandfathering statement, give the counties in which they have practiced. -B =========================================================== Physicians Register Book 1 Calloway County Alexander, Luther L. My friends - I am dropping by today to let you know that I now have another module in the JP land grants text files series ready. This installment contains a part of the "B" surnames. More specifically, the surnames contained in this file are: Bazzell, Badget, Baxter, Banks, Baldridge, Blackmer, Barlow, Barber, Ballard, Brady, Bratton, Blakeny, Baty, Bramit, Bagerm Baugh, Bayley, Barkeen, Beadles, Beadley, Beard, Beaty/Beatty, Beasley, bean and Beauchamp. If you would like a copy of this file, let me know and I will send it as an e-mail attachment unless you specify that you need it as a straight e-mail message(which often tends to skew the columnar alignments). You will receive the complete file - time constraints do not allow me to extract each individual surname from the file as a whole and send only those you may be researching. The file is not that large, and the parts you do not need can easily be deleted. Thusfar, we have the following JP land grants text files available: Smith Jones Brown Adams & Adair Allbritton Carter Copeland Farmer Helm Lovelace Parker Adkins - Alexander Alderson - Andrews Staton & Misc."S" Surnames(Part - see original post) "G" Surnames(Part) - see original post for exact surnames "C" Surnames (Part), including Cochran, Cocke, Cook and Cooper "P" Surnames (part) "L" Surnames (part) - 2 files (see original post for names) "R" Surnames (Part) - see original post for exact surnames. I copied this from a Christian Co. Library book. Jan.30,1886 Dr. Dick Dearmon is very sick & staying with George E. Boyd with doubts as to his recovery. Does anyone know anything about Dr. Dearmon? Does cemetery books give any clues? I have been told that the E. in George's name stands for Ennis & that he was M. to Susan Fuller. There are Dearmons all over Western Ky.---I am hoping that someone is researching them & will know the answer to this mystery? Cardin Carmack ccarmack@peganet.com
In the early 1800's my G-G-grandfather David Doom ran a Stage Coach Inn and Relay Station in Lyon Co. KY. (In that time frame the county would have been Caldwell). There was an Elkhorn Tavern & Relay Station located off new Hgy. 62 east of new Eddyville, Ky. The name may have changed since the early days but it was "on the way" along the Old Varment Trace toward the river. In addition to the Elkhorn Inn there was a Dooms Saloon in old Kuttawa, Ky, that later became a hotel. Does anyone remember their grandparents talking about the old Stage Coach Inn? I need to find a source that tells about Ky. and more specifically Lyon Co. Ky, Stage Coach Inns. Inns or Saloons had to be licensed by the county (Caldwell). Does anyone know where I can look for information on these early Inns in Lyon Co. Ky.? I live in south Fl. so it would have to be something I could do on the computer. Land Grant (1822-1858)of 160 acres west of the Tennessee River. Tia Cardin Cardin Carmack ccarmack@peganet.com Cardin Carmack ccarmack@peganet.com
My friends - I am back again with some additional miscellaneous text files that I have run onto while reviewing the several hundred floppy disks that I have collected over the years since the computer came into my research. If you would like a copy of any of these files, let me know - a few of them are repeats of earlier ones that I have posted, but I am doing that for the benefit of our new subscribers. These will come to you as e-mail attachments, unless you specify that you need it as a straight e-mail message. As usual, I would suggest that you verify the accuracy of the material contained within them. -B ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ John Bloomfield bio (McCracken Co.)
