    1. [KYMARSHA] Josephy Meyers Tanning and Carding
    2. KIM JONES
    3. I am trying to track down information about the Josephy Meyers Tanning and Carding Factory that was in Benton, KY circa 1875. It looks as though it was owned by an Edward B. Jones (b: 1808 in NC, m: Susan B. ?) and that his brother James D. Jones (b: 1818 in TN, m: 1841 Mahala Dotson) may have lived and worked there. I would like to be able to get any info I could about the factory, but I don't know where to look. Also, any info about Edward or James would be helpful. James is my husband's ggg grandfather. Thanks in advance, Kim Jones jones_kh@usa.net ____________________________________________________________________ Get free email and a permanent address at http://www.netaddress.com/?N=1

    1. [KYMARSHA] Marshall County - Early Marriage Records - Part 8
    2. Bill Utterback
    3. My friends - Today, we are returning to our review of the early marriage records for Marshall County. We have, in prior posts, worked our way up to 1851, and we will continue with that year in this post. If you see a marriage of interest to you, and you would like the complete data for the marriage(which usually includes the date of marriage, who performed the ceremony, the name of the surety, name(s) of witness(es), and consents, if necessary), let me know and I will forward that information to you. *Please* do not resend this entire message back to me with your request. Your help in that area is greatly appreciated. Just a brief note about the JP Homecoming event. As you know, I have created a separate mail group for those interested in attending the event. Two messages have gone out to those on that list. If you have not received these messages, and you are interested in attending the JP Homecoming next year, please be sure to let me know so that I can add your name to the other list. We have had 5 new subscribers join the List over the past few days, and I want to take a moment to welcome them and invite them to post their genealogical research needs in the 8 counties of the Jackson purchase region here to the List. From the reports I get, we have seen some phenomenal connections made between subscribers researching the same lines, with the happy result that everyone benefits. The JP Images web site is available for your perusal(the URL was in your Welcome Message), and the searchable JP List Archives are also available for your use here: http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl?list=KYJacksonPurchase-L Information on land grants which are available in the JP region(from our continuing series on that subject) can be found here: http://www.rootsweb.com/~kygraves/JPGrants.htm Again, welcome. -B +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Early Marshall County Marriages - Part 8 Ratcliffe, James E. 1. [KYMARSHA] New JP Land Grants Text File Now Available - "M" Surnames (Part) - File LG851
    2. Bill Utterback
    3. My friends - I now have another installment prepared in our ongoing series of Jackson Purchase Land Grants. This segment covers more of the "M" surnames, specifically, Morris, Mott, Mobly/Mobley, Mosbey, Moody, Motheral, Moyers, Moss, Montgomery, Morefield, Molder, Mullins and Murphy. If you would like a copy of this file, let me know and I will get it to you. Please request *File LG851". I will send it as a plain text attachment to an e-mail message, unless you specify that you need it as a straight e-mail message(which often tends to skew the columnar alignments). You will receive the complete file. Time constraints will not allow me to go into the file and extract individual surnames. The other JP land grants text files which are available are shown on the JP Land Grants web site at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~kygraves/JPGrants.htm I am currently working on another file from my miscellaneous collection and will be back with that offering shortly. -B ============================================================

    1. [KYMARSHA] JP Homecoming - List of Interested Subscribers
    2. Bill Utterback
    3. My friends - Shown below are the e-mail addresses of those of you who have expressed a definitive interest in attending a "homecoming" event next year in the Jackson Purchase region. These subscribers are from all three lists which I host. If your address is not shown on this list, and it should be, let me know so that I can add it. Conversely, if your address is shown and it should *not* be, then let me know about that also, so that I can remove it. I will be creating a mailing list for updates on the JP Homecoming event(it will not be a RootsWeb based list, but rather messages that will be sent to multiple e-mail addresses). I am doing this so that we will not "clog" the JP List with discussions about the event. The 400+ subscribers who have not expressed an interest in attending can then avoid having to read and/or delete all of the messages that may ensue concerning the planning of this gathering. I will occasionally post a brief comment to the JP List, in case we have new subscribers who may wish to join us, or other subscribers who had been uncertain about whether they could attend. 1. [KYMARSHA] JP Homecoming Update
    2. Bill Utterback
    3. My friends - I want to give you latest numbers as we look toward a Jackson Purchase Homecoming event. As of now, we are standing at 71 subscribers who have responded affirmatively with an intention to be present when such an event occurs in the year 2000. I think we will now easily reach our starting goal of 75. If we count family members, as well as subscribers, we are past the 80 mark. I think it would now be worthwhile for us to discuss dates. I have had private messages from many of you, with thoughts about that. We do have the Weakley County List's gathering occurring over the first few days of September of 2000, and some effort could be made to "piggyback" on that, although the starting of schools and colleges may make that unworkable, from the standpoint of those who teach and those who have children who must return to school. We will very likely want to avoid the week in June in which the Samford University Institute is held, as well as the week in July when the NIGR is held(I'll get those dates shortly). A few folks have said that they would prefer to come when the weather is not too hot. So, we have preferences all over the board, as is natural. In the near future, I would suggest that a small "committee" be formed to handle the planning and arrangements for this gathering. We will need at least one person who resides in the Jackson Purchase region to be on such a committee(and more than one if we can have it). There will also have to be some research done into the matter of whether there will be a need for a small fee to be paid by each of us to provide for a banquet or other such activities. We should also be giving some thought to where the "hub" of the gathering might be. Murray comes to mind at once because of the Forrest Pogue Special Collections Library at Murray State University, in which many of you may wish to do some research. Murray also has a fair number of hotel/motel rooms available. Of course, that is only a suggestion. We have much to do, and I look forward to seeing discussion on this topic as we go along. -B ============================================================

    1. [KYMARSHA] New JP Land Grants Text File Now Available "T" Surnames (Part) - File # LG876 & JP Homecoming Update
    2. Bill Utterback
    3. My friends - I am dropping by today to update the JP Homecoming figures and to let you know that another file is now ready in the continuing series on land grants in the Jackson Purchase region of KY. First, the JP Homecoming figure is now at 64, as we continue to aim at our minimum number of 75 subscribers committed to attending such an event, if it comes to fruition. The JP land grants file for today covers part of the surnames which begin with the letter "T", specifically the surnames Taylor, Tharp, Travis, Tarver and Tanner. The majority of the file is taken up with the surname Taylor. If you would like a copy of this file, please let me know by requesting file *LG876*. I will send it to you as a plain text attachment to an e-mail unless you specify that you need it as a *straight* e-mail message(which will often skew the columnar alignments). You will receive the complete file. Time constraints do not allow me to go into the file and extract the data for a single surname. To see which JP land grant files are available, go to the web site: http://www.rootsweb.com/~kygraves/JPGrants.htm No one has yet taken a stab at the latest Skills Puzzler. It is a difficult one to work with - about a 9 on our scale of 1-10 in difficulty. I will return tomorrow with the solution. -B ============================================================

    1. [KYMARSHA] Update - JP Homecoming
    2. Bill Utterback
    3. My friends - I thought I would drop in and give you the latest update on responses concerning the possibility of our having a Jackson Purchase "homecoming" event next year. When I checked my e-mail this morning at 7 AM, I had 127 messages waiting. I receive about 600 e-mail messages a week, but this was a large number for that early in the morning. Many of them were responses to the homecoming event. As of this moment, we now have 52 subscribers who have responded with an affirmative, "I'll be there", message. If we add family members that were mentioned in the responses, this brings the current total to 59. There were also 9 others who indicated that they would "like to attend", but could not yet commit, for various reasons. Realistically, we can expect about a 10% reduction in attendees at the event, if this goes forward, due to last-minute changes in plans, etc. We may well reach the minimum 75 attendee mark. I'll continue to keep you posted as the responses come in. I'll be back later with today's data posting. -B ============================================================

    1. [KYMARSHA] Marshall County Vital Statistics Records - 1852-1859 - Births - Part 17
    2. Bill Utterback
    3. My friends - Today, we will move back up to Marshall County and continue our review of the Vital Statistics birth records for the period 1852-1859. We had, in previous postings, worked our way up to the year 1855, and we will continue with that year today. If you see a name for which you would like the full dataset for that birth(which normally includes the date of birth, the sex of the child, when not obvious and the name of the father and maiden name of the mother), let me know and I will get that information off to you. Unfortunately, we are dealing with almost all initials for the child, and the parents, in this segment, but we do, at least, know the sex of the child, which helps a bit. I have given the complete information below on some of the most popular surname requests that I receive. As always, you assistance in not resending this entire message back to me with your request is greatly appreciated. Tomorrow, we will move back over into the western counties of the JP. -B ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Marshall County - Vital Statistics Records - Births - 1852-1859 - Part 17 (M)=Male (F)= Female Myers, L.A. 1. [KYMARSHA] JP Homecoming Update
    2. Bill Utterback
    3. My friends - I am going to send this as a separate message, so that you will not have to wade through a data posting to find it. Many thanks to those of you who have added your names to the list of those who could very likely attend a JP "homecoming" event in 2000. The list now numbers 31, and is continuing to go up. So we may get enough interested folks to make it workable. I'll continue to issue updates as more responses come in. If we reach the necessary minimum number, we can then begin discussing dates, activities, etc. -B ============================================================

    1. [KYMARSHA] JP Homecoming
    2. Bill Utterback
    3. My friends - On the JP List list night, I mentioned that I was throwing open the floor for discussion of a possible JP Homecoming gathering sometime in 2000. I had asked that those who had an interest in attending such an event, if it could be arranged, to let me know, so that long range planning could be started, if it appeared that enough could attend to make it worthwhile. Just as a brief update, I have heard from 8 of our subscribers who have expressed an interest in such a gathering, with about 16 potential attendees from the families of those 8 subscribers. Suggestions have been made about subjects for seminars, field trips, and perhaps a banquet. In order for this to be feasible, I think we will need to have a minimum of 75 people express an interest in attending this event. I had said last night that we ought to have about 20% of our list subscribers, and 75 is only about 15%, but I think it could be done with that number or more. If others of you are interested in this potential gathering, do let me know, so I can give more thought to it and ask for more input in various areas. If it is not workable, we'll just move on with our on-line research. The Weakley County, TN List(one of our sister lists) subscribers are planning a gathering around the first of September of next year. It might be possible to have these two gatherings back-to back, but that is only a thought. I'll be back later with today's data posting. -B ============================================================

Other available JP land grant files can be found on the JP Grants web site at: www.rootsweb.com/~kygraves/JPGrants.htm If you would like a copy of the new "P" file, let me know and I will get it to you. Once you have the file in hand, you can easily delete those parts of it which are not useful to your particular line of research. -B ============================================================

The number of names shown in this posting will be less than usual, as my computer time over the next 24 hours will be restricted due to other commitments. I have included the full data on the Starks and Pace births, since we have a fair number of people on the List who are working on those families. If you see a name of interest to you, and you would like the full data set for that birth(which usually includes the date of birth, the sex of the child if not obvious, and the name of the father and maiden name of the mother), let me know and I will forward that information on to you. 1. [KYMARSHA-L] Marshall County Vital Statistics Records - 1852-1859- Births-Part 15
    2. Bill Utterback
    3. My friends - Today, we will resume our review of the vital statistics birth records for Marshall County in the period 1852-1859. In prior posts, we have worked our way up to 1855, and we will finish up a few stragglers in 1854 and then move into the year 1855. If you see a name of interest to you, and you would like the full data set for that birth(which usually includes the date of birth, sex of child if not obvious and the name of the father and maiden name of the mother), let me know and I will get that information to you. I have provided full data on a few names below that are very popular requests when they appear. As always, your help in not resending this entire message back to me with your request is highly appreciated. In this particular group of births, there are quite a number of given names missing for these children. This is often a sign of a stillbirth, or of a child that may have died soon after the birth, although that is not always the case - the person reporting the birth to the county clerk may simply have not written down the given name of the child, or the parents had no selected a given name by the time that the reporting party had left their presence. Tomorrow, we will move over to Graves County. -B ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Marshall County Vital Statistics Records - Births - Part 15 (M)=Male (F)=Female Burge, Nedy B. 1. [KYMARSHA-L] New JP Land Grants Text File Now Available - "R" Surnames (Part) - File # LG 863
    2. Bill Utterback
    3. My friends - I now have another segment ready in our review of land grants in the Jackson Purchase region of KY. This file covers more of the "R" surnames, specifically Reeves/Reaves, Redman, Reace, Reiger, Revil, Rhew, Reno, Redden, Rennick, Richardson/Ritcherson, Riley, Richards, Rice, Richmond, Ringo, Riger, Riggs, Ridgeway, and Roland/Rowland. If you would like a copy of this file, let me know and I will get it to you. *Please request File # LG863*. I will send it as a plain text attachment to an e-mail message unless you specify that you need it as a straight e-mail message(which will often skew the columnar alignments). To view the other JP land grants text files which are available, here is the URL for that site: www.rootsweb.com/kygraves/JPGrants.htm -B ============================================================
