    1. [KYMARSHA] History of Marshall Co.
    2. Jesse Ford
    3. Hello All, I take it, the last time a book about the History of Marshall Co. from the historical society was in 1984. I know here in 1999 we have more and better information than they did in 1984. How often are the books redone with updated information? And is there a interest in doing an updated book? Thank U, jess

    1. [KYMARSHA] For Our Soldiers
    2. I received this from one of my other (less active) lists, I debated with my self if I should pass it on to this list. Then I decided that I was going to. If I offend anyone, I apologize in advance. My thoughts are that it is out responsibility to ensure that history is not forgotten or ignored. That this does pertain to our nations history and our families as well. timothy hoskins .I received this and was asked to forward it on. I think this is something that we should all care about. We owe it to the thousands who have served our country, suffered and died. The attached message is about an episode in our country's history . Our children are already studying the time and this war in school. Lest anyone say this does not belong on a genealogy and history list -- I tell you now that I disagree. I think we should stand up for those who stood up for us. Please read on. Margy Subject: Fw: Dear Jane! Date: Sat, 9 Oct 1999 14:35:18 -0500 I am forwarding this as I served during WW2, Korea & Vietnam as a non-combatant but as a patriot. Tokyo Rose went to prison for her part in WW2 and about all she did was provide entertainment for the troops, at least that was the way most saw it, but this one did worse and will never be charged. PLEASE read this through. GORDON -----Original Message----- Sent: Wednesday, October 06, 1999 1:55 PM Subject: Dear Jane! Looks like Hanoi Jane may be honored as one of the "100 Women of the Century". JANE FONDA remembered? Unfortunately many have forgotten and still countless others have never known how Ms. Fonda betrayed not only the idea of our "country" but the men who served and sacrificed during Vietnam. There are few things I have strong visceral reactions to, but Jane Fonda's participation in what I believe to be blatant treason, is one of them. Part of my conviction comes from exposure to those who suffered her attentions. The first part of this is from an F-4E pilot. The pilot's name is Jerry Driscoll, a River Rat. In 1978, the Commandant of the USAF Survival School was a former POW in Ho Lo Prison-the "Hanoi Hilton". Dragged from a stinking cesspit of a cell, cleaned, fed, and dressed in clean PJs, he was ordered to describe for a visiting American "Peace Activist" the "lenient and humane treatment" he'd received. He spat at Ms. Fonda, was clubbed, and dragged away. During the subsequent beating, he fell forward upon the camp Commandant's feet, accidentally pulling the man's shoe off-which sent that officer berserk. In '78, the AF Col still suffered from double vision (which permanently ended his flying days) from the Vietnamese Col's frenzied application of wooden baton. >From 1983-85, Col Larry Carrigan was the 347FW/DO (F-4Es). He' spent 6 years in the "Hilton", the first three of which he was "missing in action". His wife lived on faith that he was still alive. His group, too, got the cleaned/fed/clothed routine in preparation for a "peace delegation" visit. They, however, had time and devised a plan to get word to the world that they still survived. Each man secreted a tiny piece of paper, with his SSN on it, in the palm of his hand. When paraded before Ms. Fonda and a cameraman, she walked the line, shaking each man's hand and asking little encouraging snippets like: "Aren't you sorry you bombed babies?" and "Are you grateful for the humane treatment from your benevolent captors?" Believing this HAD to be an act, they each palmed her their sliver of paper. She took them all without missing a beat. At the end of the line and once the camera stopped rolling, to the shocked disbelief of the POWs, she turned to the officer in charge...and handed him the little pile. Three men died from the subsequent beatings. Col Carrigan was almost number four. For years after their release, a group of determined former POWs Including Col Carrigan, tried to bring Ms. Fonda and others up on charges of treason. I don't know that they used it, but the charge of "Negligent Homicide due to Depraved Indifference" would also seem appropriate. Her obvious "granting of aid and comfort to the enemy", alone, should've been sufficient for the treason count. However, to date, Jane Fonda has never been formally charged with anything and continues to enjoy the privileged life of the rich and famous. I, personally, think that this is shame on us, the American Citizenry. Part of our shortfall is ignorance: most don't know such actions ever took place. Thought you might appreciate the knowledge. Most of you've probably already seen this by now... only addition I might add to these sentiments is to remember the satisfaction of relieving myself into the urinal at some airbase or another where "zaps" of Hanoi Jane's face had been applied. To whom it may concern: I was a civilian economic development advisor in Viet Nam, and was captured by the North Vietnamese communists in South Viet Nam in1968, and held for over 5 years. I spent 27 months in solitary confinement, one year in a cage in Cambodia, and one year in a "black box" in Hanoi. My North Vietnamese captors deliberately poisoned and murdered a femal missionary, a nurse in a leprosarium in Ban me Thuot, SouthVietnam, whom I buried in the jungle near the Cambodian border. At one time, I was weighing approximately 90 lbs. (My normal weight is 170 lbs.) We were Jane Fonda's "war criminals." When Jane Fonda was in Hanoi, I was asked by the camp communist political officer if I would be willing to meet with Jane Fonda. I said yes, for I would like to tell her about the real treatment we POWs were receiving, which was far different from the treatment purported by the North Vietnamese, and parroted by Jane Fonda, as "humane and lenient." Because of this, I spent three dayson a rocky floor on my knees with outstretched arms with a piece of steel placed on my hands, and beaten with a bamboo cane every time my arms dipped. I had the opportunity to meet with Jane Fonda for a couple of hours after I was released. I asked her if she would be willing to debate me on TV. She did not answer me, her husband, Tom Hayden, answered for her. She was mind controlled by her husband. This does not exemplify someone who should be honored as "100 Years of Great Women." After I was released, I was asked what I thought of Jane Fonda and the anti-war movement. I said that I held Joan Baez's husband in very high regard, for he thought the war was wrong, burned his draft card and went to prison in protest. If the other anti-war protesters took this same route, it would have brought our judicial system to a halt and ended the war much earlier, and there wouldn't be as many on that somber black granite wall called the Vietnam Memorial. This is democracy. This is the American way. Jane Fonda, on the other hand, chose to be a traitor, and went to Hanoi, wore their uniform, propagandized for the communists, and urged American soldiers to desert. As we were being tortured, and some of the POWs murdered, she called us liars. After her heros-the North Vietnamese communists-took over South Vietnam, they systematically murdered 80,000 South Vietnamese political prisoners. May their souls rest on her head forever. Shame! Shame! ( History is a heavy sword in the hands of those who refuse to forget it. Think of this the next time you see Ms. Fonda-Turner at a Braves game). Please take the time to read and forward to as many people as you possibly can. It will eventually end up on her computer and she needs to know that "we will never forget". Lest we forget... "100 years of great women" Jane Fonda should never be considered.

    1. [KYMARSHA] Index to War of the Rebellion, etc.
    2. Bill Utterback
    3. My friends - It has been brought to my attention that there *is* an index to the War of the Rebellion series that I mentioned in an earlier post today. I have checked it, and the Index does appear in Series 4, at the bottom of the web site page. That makes that publication much easier to work with. -B ============================================================

    1. [KYMARSHA] The War of the Rebellion & The Official Records of the United States and Confederate Navies Now On-Line
    2. Bill Utterback
    3. My friends - I am dropping by, pursuant to my pledge to keep you abreast of valuable new web sites, to let everyone know(if you do not already)that the two huge official records of the Ware Between the States have been placed on-line, in their entirety, by Cornell University. They can be found here: http://moa.cit.cornell.edu/MOA/MOA-JOURNALS2/WARO.html The only drawback is that there is no index. However, most public libraries have at least the Index part of these works and the volume and page numbers can be located there, and then used in conjunction with the on-line volumes. I'll be back later with today's data posting. -B ============================================================

    1. [KYMARSHA] Elders, Pastors-New Hope Primitive Baptist Church
    2. Herbert Barnes
    3. Does anyone on the list know any of the Elders and/or pastors, past or present, and how to contact any of them? My gr-gr-gr-grandmother, Ruth Hofstetter Brien is said to be buried in the cemetery behind the church. She died in the 1850's. There are 5 or six unmarked graves in the cemetery. I would like to contact someone with the church to see if I could examine some of the old church records. There is a sign on the Church door indicating services are held the third Sunday each month at 11:00 AM. I went there the 3rd Sunday in May, 1999 and waited from 10:00 AM to 12:00 noon. No one showed up. The church building and the cemetery is in good repair so someone takes care of the area. If anyone knows anything about how to contact someone at the church, please let me know. Thank You, Herbert Barnes, Dallas, TX

    1. [KYMARSHA] Marshall County - Early Marriages - Part 9
    2. Bill Utterback
    3. My friends - Today, we are going to continue our review of early Marshall County marriages. In past installments of this series, we have worked our way up to the year 1851, and we will finish that year in this posting and begin with the year 1852. If you see a marriage in which you have an interest and would like to receive the full dataset for that marriage(which generally includes the date of marriage, name of the surety, who performed the ceremony, and the consents, if needed), please let me know and I will get that additional information out to you. And, as always, I appreciate your courtesy in not resending this entire message back to me with your request. At this time, it appears likely that there will not be a data post tomorrow. I will be working with the AOL staff for a time preparing the necessary groundwork to offer a US Land & Property Research "live" course through their on-line classroom facilities. If that preparatory work runs on as long as I think it may, there will be no time for a data posting. I will let the List know for certain about that tomorrow. Keep a good thought for those on our List who are in the path of Hurricane Floyd. I have heard from several who were either leaving their area or securing their property to ride it out. I know we all hope that things will not be as bad as it appears that they may be at this point today. -B ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Marshall County - Early Marriages - Part 9 Brown, David James, Isabel Gatlin, Granville J. 2. Bill Utterback
    3. My friends - Our good friend Jan Powell, who hosts the Obion County, TN List, passed the following URL along, and the narrative contained in the title of the article in the Subject line above, and written by Bettie Cummings Cook, CG, is so compelling that I want to pass it on to you. I hope you will visit this site, and read the article in its totality. It expresses my feelings, and those of many other tenured genealogists, very well. The Internet is great- as far as it goes, and Bettie spells out the good and bad about Internet genealogy very clearly. The URL is: http://www.rootsweb.com/~vaaugust/cook.htm I'll be back later with today's data post. -B ============================================================

    2. Bill Utterback
    3. My friends - I am dropping by today to let you know that I now have another segment ready in our continuing review of land grants made in the Jackson purchase region. This file contains more of the "P" surnames; specifically Piper, Price, Philly, Priest, Pitt, Pickett, Pitman, Prior, Pettypool(P'Pool), Poole/Pool, Porter, Polk, Powell, Polsgrove, Pointer, Potts, Ponder, Puntney, Plumlee, Purdom, Punctney, Puryear and Pirtle. If you would like a copy of this file, let me know and I will send it in your direction. Please request *File LG859*. It will be sent as a plain text attachment to an e-mail messages unless you specify that you need to have it by straight e-mail(which often will skew the columnar alignments). You will receive the full file - time constraints will not allow me to extract data from these files on a single surname. The web site with other available JP land grants can be found here: http://www.rootsweb.com/~kygraves/JPGrants.htm The Jackson Purchase FAQ Page has been updated and redesigned. It is available at: http://users.arn.net.~billco/jacksonfaq1.html For those on the JP List, I'll be back later with the solution to the latest Skills Puzzler - we have had a lot of good responses to this one. -B

    3. Hi everyone, I am new to the list and I have a question for you. Can anyone tell me the name and directions to a cemetery in Aurora that is behind Blue's Restuarant or was it Blue's Drivein? Thanks for the information. Dollie

    3. I'm trying to find out where I can buy a copy of "The Joneses of Kentucky's Calloway and Marshall Counties - 1820-1901" by Henry Earl Jones in 1988. I mailed a letter to the publisher's address, but it was returned marked "Forwarding Order Expired". Here is the address that I tried: The Kentucky Joneses Southern Mycology, Inc. PO Box 982 Fairhope, AL 36533 Does anyone have an idea of what the current address would be or where I could buy a copy of the book? Thanks in advance, Kim Jones jones_kh@usa.net ____________________________________________________________________ Get free email and a permanent address at http://www.netaddress.com/?N=1
