I have received copies of the marriage bond for John Abell and Dorothy Bowles from Mary Jo Maguire at the Washington Co. Historical Soc. Also included is a copy of permission for Dorothy to marry, signed by her mother, Alethair Bowles. Mary Jo and I both believe that Alethair is actually Alley Raley's given name, with Aloysia being a baptismal name, as all Catholic children had to have a Saint's name. I also have a copy of Alley's marriage bond, signed by her father, but she is referred to as Alley, so not much help. There seems to be a lot of confusion surrounding Alley's given name; I have seen her referred to as Alice, and Mary Jo sent the following marriage records from printed sources at the Hist. Soc: Monica Bowles, d/o Allen to John Railey; bond 1-4-1827;sur John Abell Louisa Bowles, d/o Aleantha Bowles to William Murphy; bond 10-13-1827; sur James Railey Arena Bolds, d/o Allenthy Bolds to Kendin (Kenelum) Murphy, Jr;bond 3-3-1832; sur Joel Vaughn Are there any Bowles or Raley descendants who have documents giving Alley Raley as Alethair? I believe there was a sister or niece of Alley who was named Elizabeth Alethair Raley. Can anyone help me prove or disprove that Alley Raley was actually Alethair? Beth Abel Jones
