Can anyone help? > > Thank you, > Dayna Ryan > Xenia, OH Your Thomas Miles may be identical to one of the Thomas Miles who served in the 10th Ky. Infantry (Union) in the Civil War. The 10th Ky. was made up mostly of recruits from Washington County, Kentucky, but also Marion County. All the Miles who were in the 10th were (listed by name, rank and Company of this regiment): Miles, Chas. Henry, Pvt., Co. B. Miles, Henry, Pvt., Co. B Miles, James M., Pvt., Co. B. Miles, Joseph, Pvt., Co. E Miles, Thomas, Pvt., Co. B Miles, Thos., Pvt., Co. K According to the Washington County Historical Book Company E was mostly men from Manton, Kentucky which is south of Springfield. Some may have joined from Marion County. I do not know exactly where the other Companies came from. You can search for other names at this website: http://w3.one.net/~durp/CivilWar/Union.htm While we have listed over 35,000 men, it is not a complete listing. I've taken some time off from this project but we will add more in the future. There were 100,000 Kentuckians who fought for the Union from Ky., and 40,000 who fought for the South. Eventually we may be able to list all of them for people to look up. Your post caught my eye because my great granduncle, Richard Miles Fields fought for the 10th Ky. I have always wondered where the "Miles" came from in his middle name - there's probably a connection to your Miles. Happy Hunting for your ancestors. Mark Franklin, Ohio

My gggrandparents, Patrick Spain and Joan Yates were married at Calvary Church probably in the 1860s. Can anyone tell me how I could find out more about Calvary Church? Terry
Greetings to all the list members. I am new also. Dyna's post caught my eye as I do not often see the name Duncan, and have been trying to trace my gggrandfather, without much success. His name was William Duncan McLain b. 1847 in or around Marion, KY. He m. Betsy Elizabeth Gardner in 1869. They had 3 children, Donald, Thomas, and Edith. My g grandfather was Thomas. He married Lucetta Stallings (her mom was one of those Sweeneys from Liberty), and they had Raymond Stallings McLain. Ray ended up living most of his life in Texas. He fought in the Poncho Villa Wars, and in WWII marched in on Germany. Would love any leads at all about this familie's participation in events around KY, or any other pertainent info. Christen A. Is anyone on this list researching MILLER and FLANAGAN lines in Washington/Marion Co., KY.? My David Miller came from Pa. about 1796 to Nelson Co. for a couple years and settled on Rolling Fork near Raywick in Washington/Marion Co. My Patrick Flanagan came from County Cork, Ireland to Baltimore Co., Maryland in mid 1700's with brothers Terrance and John. They came to Mercer Co., Ky. about 1790 then to Washington/Marion Co. about 1800. They settled just outside Lebanon on Campbellsville Pike. Sure would like to exchange info on these families. Has anyone see the following article? Supposedly it describes the Catholic migration issue from MD to KY and elsewhere. Maryland Catholic Diaspora byThomas Spalding, CFX in the U.S. Catholic Historian Vol 8, no 3, fall 1989. It sounds like something we need copied, scanned, typed for our lists. Don't you think? Can anyone help out? Francine Conn Halter
Carol, it never hurts any of us (old timers and new times) to get the history lesson of how it all began. Question: Was that the order in which the Catholics traveled? (you said) "When Nelson/Washington Cos began to fill, they went on to Cape Girardeau - then to Union Co., Ky., and then to Daviess Co., Ind. - and then ----- all over!" Can anyone provide the names of those who signed the "pact"? Yes, there were a lot of Wathens in St. Mary's, Washingtion/Nelson, Union, etc. Priests and nuns by that name, too. Want to share with us your line? Francine Conn Halter
Hi Can someone please senf me info, on how to change over to a new e-mail address, and cancel out the old address.. Thank you.. Roland Hundley hundley@localnet.com
This month, after 20 years of searching, I discovered where my MACKIN ancestors came from in Co. Mayo, Ireland. My third-great-grandfather Thomas MACKIN was born in 1802 near Kilmaine, Co. Mayo, Ireland. I discovered this information in the obituary of his wife, Bridget COSTELLO MACKIN. Fortunately for me, their son was Fr. William P. MACKIN, pastor of St. Cecilia's parish in Louisville at the time Bridget died in February 1890. Therefore, a wonderful obituary was printed in the 6 Mar 1890 issue of the Catholic Advocate, published in Louisville, Ky. >From this obituary, I also learned Bridget's maiden name was COSTELLO. She was born near Tuam, Co. Galway, Ireland, just about 19 miles from Kilmaine. It hadn't even occurred to me that she might have been born somewhere other than Co. Mayo. For anyone else interested in searching the Catholic Advocate, I found microfilm copies of it in the Louisville Free Public Library's Main Branch at 4th and York. The drawer isn't labeled, but it's in with the Catholic Record microfilm (the name of the current Catholic newspaper in Louisville). While not everyone had obituaries printed there (which is why it never occurred to me in the last 20 years to look there), if your ancestor was a member of a religious order or closely related to one, there's a better chance. Prominent Catholics also got preference, I suppose. I had found the obituary for Fr. Mackin in 1893, but it didn't occur to me to look for Bridget's there. I didn't even know she died in Louisville, as she had lived in Lebanon for 30-40 years after immigrating to Kentucky. She and Thomas are both buried at St. Augustine's in Lebanon. Other Irish family names related to this family are WALSH and JOYCE. I'd love to hear from anyone researching these names in the Marion, Washington, and Jefferson county areas. Rita <rfox@mis.net>
I don't know why it's taken me this long to wake up to the fact that the many MD Catholics I tracked from counties like St. Mary's, Frederick, Prince George, and others... to KY counties like Washington, Nelson, Hardin, Marion, Graves, Union, and others... were sure to trek farther west, across the Mississippi River (where would they have crossed????)... into MO counties like Perry, St. Francis, St. Genevieve, Scott, Mississippi, and others... *********** Wake up Marylanders & Kentuckians...go west with your genealogy research. There are some great rootsweb lists available in Missouri where a lot of our ancestors settled (before going farther west?). Good luck. Here we come!
