I have no Dugan references but, a possible clue. If your Thomas worked for the "Katy" Rail Road, we would direct you to Parsons, Labette Co., Ks. Parsons was the Katy's main center and was connected with it's other Branch in Kansas City. Parsons public library has a webpage, but I did not save it's address. Jarboe, again at St. Rose, immediately volunteered to minister to the troops and was in some of the bloodiest battles of the war and distinguished himself in caring for the wounded." "At the height of the Battle of Shiloh, comrade of Fr. Jarboe were falling on all sides while he was busy administering to the dying. Finding a young soldier suffering from a mortal wound, Fr. Jarbe was preparing to cut away his boots for the anointing of the when a bullet shattered the knife he held in his hand. Before the priest recovered from this shock an exploding shell struck the injured soldier and hurled his body some distance across the field. As it did so, a penknife dropped from one of the soldiers pockets and was put to use by the chaplain. Fr. Jarboe always thought this second knife was sent to replace the one shot from his hand. He kept the knife as a memento of the war and would often show it to his friends." "During the latter part of the battle, solicitude for the spiritual welfare of the union soldiers led Fr. Jarboe across the lines under a flag of truce. His mission of mercy ended, he tried to return to his regiment but was seized by pickets of the Federal Army and brought before Gen. Wm. Nelson." I noticed the surname Hill. One of Valentine Peyton's(Lincoln Co)dau was a young widow of Wm Hill. Since in my library I found that the Hill family was Maryland Catholic and another dau of this old Valentine mar. Maryland Catholic Fleming Goode I thought I would take a chance and see if anyone has any knowledge of this WM HILL ? LUCY JANE(aka Lucinda)PEYTON and WM HILLl married 30 December 1799 Lincoln Co. Mary, I noticed on pg 45 of your Thomas Hill & Rebecca Miles book a picture of St. Rose Church. This, being the our first glimpse of the church, we were shocked at the remarkable resemblance of the structure and landscape to St. Francis Church of St. Paul, Ks, aka Osage Mission. This church was once referred to as "The Beacon of the Plains" and dedicated May, 1884. They say everyone has a twin. Perhaps this could apply to Catholic Churches as well. Though, the similarities are striking, one should not be too surprised since, the Sister of Loretto help establish the mission in 1847. Or maybe St. Francis' appearance was so design to remind it's early KS settlers of their KY home. Family names such as....... Bell, Bradshaw, Brown, Coomes, Fowler, French, Hill, Jarboe, Maguire, McAtte, Murphy, O'Bryan, Russell, Vessels Wathen, Whalen, and so on, may of been the influence. Since we find all this curious, (because my mother is a Jarboe, and still lives in St. Paul) we were hoping that you our someone with the lists may have a current photo of St. Rose. Wonder if someone could check the 1860 Census and see if Green and Malica Phillips still lived in Marion County. It is possible they moved to Casey County or even to Texas. Malica shows up in the 1870 Texas Census, but Green doesnt. Also, does anyone know if there is a grave site for Green Phillips in Marion County? I am also still looking for any information on Thomas J. Back who married Elizabeth Phillips on Jan 5, 1869 in Marion County and shows up on the 1880 Census with 4 children. He was a farmer and is listed as being in the Loretto District. Would love to know where his farm was and who has it today.
