    1. [KYMARION-L] New MACKIN website
    2. Rita Fox
    3. I just uploaded my Mackin genealogy database to the web and invite you to stop by for a visit. The URL is http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Acres/4947/mackin.html. Major surnames: MACKIN, JOYCE, ROBY, WATHEN, WOODS, but lots of others, too! There are lots of Marion County connections from the early 1850s to about the 1920s, particular among the Irish community. I also list sources (as it annoys me to find info I can't verify <g>). If you find any broken links, please let me know. I've wrestled with this all day. Family Origins' has a few bugs to work out of the $29 model. They're probably in the deluxe, but I'm too broke to upgrade.) Good thing I know how to write simple HTML commands! Sometimes the wizards just aren't enough. Rita Mackin Fox <rfox@mis.net>

    1. [KYMARION-L] JOYCE, WATHEN, WOODS, and many more
    2. Rita Fox
    3. On a recent trip to the Marion County Library (which was wonderful), I found connections to the following surnames and would like to see if others are researching these names: Thomas JOYCE and Adelia MACKIN (He was a stone mason--both born in Ireland.) They eventually moved to Louisville. John Henry WATHEN and Mary Ann ("Mollie") MACKIN. Joseph DUNN and Rose Alice MACKIN. Michael MACKIN and Mary GANNON (sometimes shows up as CANNON in records). Thomas J. MACKIN m. Nora SEYMOUR, daughter of Henry SEYMOUR and Susan McGINNIS. Anna WALSH/WELSH and Thomas MACKIN. Regina MACKIN m. a McSHANE. H.O. CRAYCROFT m. Virgie MACKIN (daughter of James A. and Rose HAMILTON MACKIN). By 9 Aug. 1907, they had two children and lived in Vine Grove, KY. Stephen Francis WOODS m. Annie MACKIN in 1886 in Marion County. John Jasper "Jack" WOODS and Mary Elizabeth "Lizzie" MACKIN. (Stephen Francis and John Jasper WOODS are supposed to be brothers, according to family tradition.) If anyone recognizes any of these names, I'd love to hear from you. I am trying to put together a list of all descendants of my Thomas Mackin and Bridget (possibly RUSH, but not sure), who came from Ireland and settled in Marion County. Happy hunting, everyone! 1. [KYMARION-L] WALKERs in Marion Co.
    2. Rita Fox
    3. I think my great-great-grandmother might have been Adaline Walker. (I have her as Adaline Mercer and understand she was teh illegitimate daughter of Felix Mercer, a bachelor who had at least four illegitimate children with at least two women.) Adaline married Michael C. Mackin. At St. A's, several of their children were baptized. There were no Mercer baptisms, so I didn't think I'd find her. Then on one of the baptisms, Adaline was recorded as Adaline Walker (all the others were Adaline Mercer). I thought that might be a clue and looked in the 1850 census book I have. There was an Adaline Walker at Calvary Female Institution. She was three years older than the age I expected my Adaline, but that's entirely possible. Are there any WALKER researchers out there who might be able to help me find Adaline's mother? I'm thinking Emiline and Elizabeth are two possibilities. I'm going to a reunion July 19 and would like to have additional information. Thanks! Oh, I'll be offline until 7/13, so please be patient for a response. Rita <rfox@mis.net>

    3. I'm planning a trip to Lebanon on July 15 or so and want to go to the Marion County Library, which I understand also serves as the location of the historical society's records. Any tips on how to get the most out of this resource are appreciated. I have already learned that they are closed on Mondays. Does anyone know their weekend schedule, in case I can squeeze in one more trip before my July 19 family reunion? I hope to look at newspapers on microfilm and at the various books in their collections. Do they have many records from St. Augustine's (other than the cemetery record book) or other Catholic churches in the area? Thank you, in advance, for any advice or information. 3. Folks, please forgive me for this method of spreading the word about a scam going around. I retired from BellSouth after 31 years service and can vouch for the attached message. It's principle purpose ( you had to be served from an electronic central office) was to allow a subscriber to dial a service code from a phone to allow a long distance call to be charged to his/her home phone. M. Dean Hunt Louisville, KY Thought you might like to know this..................... From: Robin L. Browne I received a telephone call from an individual identifying himself as an AT&T Service Technician who was conducting a test on our telephone lines. He stated that to complete the test we should touch nine (9), zero (0), the pound sign (#) and then hang up. Luckily, we were suspicious and refused. Upon contacting the telephone company we were informed that by pushing 90# you give the requesting individual full access to your telephone line, which allows them to place a long distance telephone calls billed to your home phone number. We were further informed that this scam has been originating from many of the local jails/prisons. I have also verified this information with UCB Telecomm. Please beware. This sounds like an Urban Legend - IT IS NOT!!! I further called GTE Security this morning and verified that this is definitely possible. DO NOT press 90# for ANYONE. The GTE Security department requested that I share this information with EVERYONE I KNOW!!! Could you PLEASE pass this on. If you have mailing lists and/or newsletters from organizations you are connected with, I encourage you to pass on this information. Note from Sue - this is very real!! We got the same message from internal Telecommunications at 3M - they notified me as the receptionist as some of the 3M locations were being hit. It is very real, and one of the local companies here had over $3000 added to their phone bill. My friend Vic sent this to me, so watch out. Bob G.

    1. [KYMARION-L] MACKIN/MACKEN
    2. Rita Fox
    3. My 3rd-great-grandfather Thomas MACKIN (b. 1802, per his tombstone; d. 23 Oct. 1854) came from County Mayo to Marion County, KY, in the early 1850s. His Marion County vital statistic death record lists his parents as Michael and Buget (Bridget?) McKIN. Thomas came to America ahead of his wife and children, then sent for them ca 1853. (It's possible, actually, that they all came to America together and that his family just followed him to Kentucky in 1853. The obituary is vague.) His wife Bridget (surname unknown) was born 1805 (per tombstone). Their children: Michael C. (b. ca 1830; d. 1884) [my gr-gr-grandfather] unknown daughter (married Thomas Joyce) Samuel P. (b. 6 Mar 1833, d. 26 Oct 1885, per tombstone) Thomas (b. ca 1839, per 1860 census) John (b. 2 Jan. 1839; d. 7 Sep 1872, per tombstone) James A. (b. ca 1844, per 1860 census) Mary Ellen/Eliza (b. ca 1846, per 1860 census) William (b. 1848-49; d. 3 May 1893), became a priest and president of St. Joseph's College The census years were way off from the tombstone ones I found, so I don't know which are correct. There's also another Michael MACKIN who settled in Marion Co. Tradition says they were cousins. They're all buried near each other at St. Augustine's Church cemetery in Lebanon, Marion Co., KY. This other Michael (1822-1896) married Mary CANNON. Both Michael and Mary were born in Ireland and came to Kentucky via Virginia, where one of their children was born. I have lots of info on the various MACKIN/MACKEN families of Marion County, but none electronically yet. Most of them seem to have come to work on the L&N railroad extension during the early 1850s. Thomas and Bridget were tollgate keepers. If anyone else is researching MACKINs/MACKENs, please let me know! Have a great day, everyone!
