    3. Yes, there is a newspaper. The Salyersville Independent. It comes out once a week, on Thursday. The phone number is: 606-349-2915. I think it's about $26 for out of town subscription. 1. Obituaries
    2. On the obits page of the Magoffin Genweb site I have started a section for recent obits. The ones already listed there are in the archives. I subscribe to The Big Sandy News and Troublesome Creek Times and will type those pertaining to Magoffin Co and add them here. Does anyone get the Salyersville Independent and would be willing to type those up from there to be submtted to the site? It would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Gloria

    2. The Salyersville Independent is the county newspaper and issues from the early 1930's to present are available on microfilm. You can get them from University of Kentucky Interlibrary loan. Specific information on films available can be found at the following web site: _http://www.kygenweb.net/ukfilm/magoffin.txt_ (http://www.kygenweb.net/ukfilm/magoffin.txt) Hope this helps. 2. Rebecca Christmas
    3. Can someone give me some information about "Mary Burgey Cemetery"? Supposedly it is located at Mallie in Knott County and is the place where Rebecca Branham-Smith Pigman is buried. I have checked the cemetery listings and since I've had no luck finding it wondering if the name has been changed. Rebecca Campbell Christmas

    1. Website updates
    2. I have made several updates to our website. Marriages for Nichols have been added. The births listed with Ky Vitals are completed for the years 1911-1920. Other things have been added but to be honest right now I can't remember what. I would like to apologize to all of you for not working on the site for the past month. We lost our precious grandson in a car accident and we are all devastated. I am trying to get back on my feet but this is the worst pain I have ever had in my life. Take Care, Gloria

    1. Re: [Magoffin] Raising genealogists with cemetery search
    2. When Duncan was only 3 or so, we finally located a cemetery which my Dad visited as a little boy. The graves back in the woods, and they were covered with large slabs of limestone set up on limestone supports. Sort of like a box cover for the graves. Duncan only knew that we had "found" his "great great great." When it dawned on him that he was standing on Grandpa Allen, his little face was distressed..."Please get him out of there, Mama! He can't breathe in there!" When he understood that Grandpa Allen had been dead for 140 years he said, sadly, "Just bones now." He thought that we were going to visit with Grandpa Allen. He was touched by the tiny crypt cover which covered an unnamed child. Now we talk about what Grandpa Allen (and others) did when they lived. Duncan, now 6, still thinks that Grandpa Allen needs a new tractor (John Deere, of course). I can't convince him that Grandpa Allen used a mule to plow his many acres of lovely bottom land. Any cemetery prompts a "Do I have any Greats in this one, Mom?" I'm hoping to bring him to the Founders Day this fall and do some searching with him. The Hammonds/Heltons/Browns of Magoffin County are all on his side, not mine. Constance

    3. It's funny how you can teach them this stuff. I have a 6 and 9 year old son. I went to so many cemeteries last year, that whenever we passed one, they would yell, "There's a cemetery Mommy!! Aren't we going to stop?" I just hope they appreciate this stuff when they are older. 1. Eliza "Anna" Montgomery
    2. Dear List: Looking to locate a possible gravesite for Eliza Ann Helton Hammon Montgomery. She was the 2nd wife of Benjamin Montgomery of Licking Station, Magoffin County. She died prior to 1880, but probably bwt 1875-1880 when Benjamin has remarried. I know that Eliza Ann Helton married Hezekiah Hammon in Morgan County, 1851 and she married Benjamin Montgomery 1868 in Magoffin County. In 1860 she is called Anna Hammon, living with her 1st husband, Hezekiah. In 1870 she is Eliza A. Montgomery living with 2nd husband, Ben. Can anyone suggest links to Magoffin county cemeteries where Montgomerys are buried? Constance

    3. Licing Stations is what is the Ben Gardner Farm today. It is at the top of Ivy Point at the North end of Salyersville. It is the first settlement in this area. Ben still has the original house in his yard. It is a wonderful old two story house. I haven't got to go in it yet, but would like to . I heard that the old ledgers from the store that was there is in the house. Stacey Blanton, Salyersville. 2. In a message dated 6/19/05 11:35:21 AM, [email protected] writes: > The facility in Salyersville is packed full of research materials. They > only operate with 2-3 volunteers, so they can't do extensive research for > one individual. > Sounds like it might be a good weekend research trip to see what they have on the Hamon/Hammon/Hammonds. There are so many spellings used over the years it can be pretty confusing. This is my son's research, and I'm just really beginning to dig into it. I live close to Cincinnati and the library is excellent, but not as dedicated to KY counties as to OH counties as you might imagine. My son's line is through his maternal great grandmother Lena Faye Spencer. It is her mother, Linda Ann Hammond, who was born in Magoffin County. [Linda]Ann's parents were Benjamin Hamon and Sarah E. (-?-), then Hezekiah Hamon and Eliza Ann Helton, then Benjamin, Sr and Sarah "Sally" Johnson. There are several wives that I have not discovered family lineages for yet...like Sarah E. who I was asking about this morning and Eliza Ann Helton who married Hezekiah Hamon in 1851. We can't determine which of the Helton families she was born in. I know that she remarried Ben Montgomery after Hezekiah died, but she didn't live that long, Ben Montgomery had remarried by 1880. Perhaps the answers are there in Salyersville. Thanks for all this information, Bob. Constance
