Paddock, Los Angeles Times Article Created: 01/14/2008 02:43:42 AM PST BERKELEY - There is a legend at the University of California, Berkeley, that human bones are stored in the landmark Campanile tower. But university officials say that's not true - the bones are actually stored beneath Hearst Gymnasium's swimming pool. The remains of about 12,000 American Indians rest in drawers and cabinets in the gym's basement. Many of them were dug up by university archaeologists and have been stored under the pool since the early 1960s. The bones now are at the center of a dispute between American Indians who want to rebury their ancestors and university officials who have been slow to hand over the remains. Some tribal leaders contend the university is violating a federal law that governs the repatriation of artifacts and remains. "We don't appreciate them keeping our ancestors locked up in a drawer," said Ted Howard, cultural resources director of the Shoshone-Paiute tribes. "This is a human-rights issue to the tribes. All we're asking for is to be treated fairly." The bones, along with 400,000 American Indian artifacts, are held by the university's Phoebe A. Hearst Museum, which has a small exhibit space on campus but one of the largest collections of human remains in the U.S. outside a cemetery. snip of article, please see site.

Eddyville, Ky. I want to invite everyone to the Battle of Eddyville Civil War Re- enactment on April 27, 28, 29. School children will attend period demonstrations on the 27th. Saturday and Sunday will be period events including a Grand Ball on Saturday night and church service on Sunday morning with Bro. Jerrel White as a CW preacher. There will be battles on Saturday afternoon at 2:00 and on Sunday afternoon about 1:00. We already have over 400 re-enactors registered and expect about 500. We also have 14 cannons coming. A cannon night fire on Saturday night is really spectacular. Last year over 800 kids attended the demonstrations on Friday, seeing how life was in the 1860's. We will have medical, flags, camp life, rifle, cherokee Indian and a blacksmith. There is a Ladies Tea at Maple Hill on Saturday. There are about 10 suttlers coming, so you can buy period items. All of you have been doing so much genealogy, please come see how life was back then. A lot of your ancestors fought in the war. We have been working on this since last year's and it has doubled in size. There will also be a memorial tribute to Gen. Hyland B. Lyon at Riverside Cemetery. The event is at the Lee S. Jones Park in Eddyville, Ky. For more info go to http://www.BattleofEddyville.com/

Hi Listers, If you have posted anything to a Rootsweb Message Board, in the hopes of making contact with someone with your email address in the last few years, it will not work now. When Ancestry.com revamped the Rootsweb Message boards a couple of months ago a default was added. The default now states one must join ancestry.com to access email contacts on the message boards. So, Your email addresses are no longer on your queries. You can add your email addresses back to your post by following the Ancestry Help Desk guideline I have posted below. I hope this works for you. If I post a query on Rootsweb, I hate to think someone has to join Ancestry.com to get my email addy, so they can respond. Ken Gilkey _____________________________________________ From: Helpdesk Ancestry.com To: [email protected] Hi, If you have ever used Ancestry, the default there is no public file.
