    1. [KYLYON] Oliver family in 1880
    2. Douglas Smith
    3. I am attempting to research the OLIVER family in the Lyon County, Kentucky area. In 1880, there was a "Polly" Oliver with a son, Thomas. It is this Thomas Oliver's ancestry I am attempting to research. Thomas Henry Oliver was born September 6, 1877 and died June 5, 1947 in McCracken County, Kentucky.  He married Martha Jane Dupass, who was  born a bout 1882 in Caldwell County, KY and died there August 3, 1930. There seems to be a James Milton Oliver connected to this family. He is too young to be a son of Thomas, as he was born March 15, 1885 in Lyon County an died April 17, 1958 in Henderson County, KY. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Regards, W. D. Smith Tennessee

    3. Janet, Thank you for your reply.... I understand that this is some one that painted the pictures. I also sent the question to Sally Whittington with the Lyon Co. Historical Society. Her reply was similar to yours. She said the artists were called Limners and that they traveled up and down the Cumberland River and would get off the boats and paint these pictures for people for pay or sometimes just for room and board. Do you still think the artist may have been Charles Bizet from France? I thank both you and Sally for all of this information. I had never heard of this before and find it very interesting. Lyon Co., Ky is a place that is filled with an interesting history!!! 2. Vicki Stewart
    3. To everyone, Peggy Gilkey is an angel for all the work she did to preserve Pat Oliver's Genealogy Home Pages. There were over three hundred fifty pages for just Caldwell and Lyon Counties and she saved all of these in the orginal form he had them in. I am amazed, she must have spent many, many hours on this project alone. I am the one who caused the delay in getting these up as I couldn't figure out to make them all go together. I was working on a links sheet for all these pages but with so many it was an on and off project and then I found a main page that connected it all together. Peggy had it all there, everything! I just hadn't seen it. Anyway, the pages are up and can be found from the link to Pat Oliver'Home Pages from http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~kycaldw2/ for Caldwell County and from http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~kylyon/index.html for Lyon County. Bless you, Peggy! You did an absolute fantastic job on this. Vicki

    3. Good Morning to all Caldwell Researchers, I am so excited to tell you some great news! I just wanted to let everyone know that we now have a Caldwell County Genealogy Society. Organized Tuesday night Aug. 17th It was wonderful to be a part of all of this! It was something to see so many wonderful researchers gathered together for a common cause. There were members from the Caldwell Co. Historical Society, DAR, SAR, Jim Pearce Camp Civil War Group, many who have published Caldwell County Books such as Greg Watson who has been doing the cemetery books. It was just the first of many enjoyable meetings to come. If you are interested in learning more or joining, a webpage has been set up on the Caldwell Cemeteries website for the Genealogy Society. http://westernkyhistory.org/caldwellcemetery/caldgensoc.html Also a grave marking ceremony for at least three Revolutionary War Soldiers will be held at Fredonia, Ky. Oct.2, 2010 Robert Leeper, John Elder, James Hawthorn and possibly William Hamilton 1750-1800 if information can be found for him. For more information on this see the Caldwell Cemeteries website. http://westernkyhistory.org/caldwellcemetery/ Hope to see you at the Grave Marking Ceremony or a Genealogy Society Meeting. 3. OLD FREDONIA CEMETERY CLEANUP SATURDAY, JANUARY 9, 2010 We need your help to put our best foot forward Dr. Scott Giltner and the Gov. Isaac Shelby Chapter Sons of the American Revolution are planning a "Grave Marking and Dedication Ceremony" in two local cemeteries sometime this spring or early fall for three and maybe four Revolutionary War Veterans. The dedications will begin with Robert Leeper at the Old Fredonia Cemetery. Robert passed away on Jan. 25, 1823. His wife, Jane N. Leeper died on May 3, 1850. The N. stands for Neel, her maiden name. In the course of the Revolution, Jane's father Col. Thomas Neel and all of her brothers would perish. After the Leeper dedication we plan to move down the hill about 150 yards to the Livingston Presbyterian Church Cemetery also known as Centerville Cemetery. Marker dedications will be for Lieutenant Colonel James Hawthorn and John Elder. Hawthorn is recognized, as a national hero, for his command at the battle of King's Mountain in South Carolina. John Elder passed away Oct. 21, 1799, his tombstone has been documented as the oldest tombstone in Caldwell and Crittenden Counties. We are still trying to verify information on William Hamilton, age 50, died Oct. 27, 1800. We are expecting people from South Carolina, Indiana and Illinois for the dedications and we should do our best after all look what these veterans have given us. The Livingston Presbyterian Church Cemetery will be ready but we need your help on the Old Fredonia Cemetery. The Caldwell County Cemetery Board has scheduled a cleanup on Sat. Jan. 9, 2010. With little care and the last cemetery cleanup being 5 years ago, add the ice storm of Jan. 2009, it is in bad shape. The Cemetery Board will bring chainsaws and tools. What we need are lots of volunteers to help carry broken limbs and straighten stones. If for health or age reasons you feel unable to help, please come and visit anyway. You will be surprised just how much we can accomplish. Family names known to be buried here; Armstrong, Brasher, Bugg, Byrd, Cox, Driver, Davidson, Deboe, Elder, Emily, Freeman, Hamilton, Harmon, Leeper, Lowery, Loyd, Pemberton, Smith, Travis, Vogel and probably more than 100 lost and unmarked graves. Where? You can get to the cemetery three ways. 1. Hugh Yates Drive, just off Hwy 641-91. Come to the end of the road, park out of the way and walk straight up the fence row about three hundred feet. 2. Mary Boone farm 21804 Marion Rd. just north of Fredonia on Hwy 641-91. Look for a pond with old team equipment displayed. Someone will take you to the cemetery, even if you are running late someone will be at the barn to carry you up. 3. Marion Ivy Phelps farm. Turn right at Feagan's on 902 East for about 1/2 mile. After the S curve and at the top of the hill, his driveway will be on the left. Take that driveway and go behind the house to a barn. Make sure and close all gates because there may be horses in the fields. What time? We will start at eight AM and the Cemetery Board usually stops around twelve. It's according to weather, what we get accomplished and how much help we have. During a break, refreshments will be provided and we plan to tell more about the people and the cemetery's history. Please help us to locate and identify veteran's graves. -- Ken & Peggy Gilkey Ky Vital Records Project Volunteers \\\|/// \\ ~ ~ // ( @ @ ) ---oOOo-(_)-oOOo---McGillekehr http://www.kyvitals.com --Ky Vital Recs. 3. Can't wait for these to be viewable. Thought this newspaper article might interest some of you listers. Ken Gilkey _____________________________________ Saturday, Dec. 26, 2009 Old Ky. records resurface, prepared for public The Associated Press LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Kentucky land, census and marriage records from the late 1700s to the 1900s have recently resurfaced and are being prepared for public inspection. The Lexington Herald-Leader reported the books are being indexed to make information easier to find and documents are being scanned so they can be made available for public viewing. The original record books will not be available for the public. http://www.kentucky.com "The documents are so old and the pages are so fragile that I really would not be willing to put them out there for the public to peruse through," Deputy Fayette County Clerk Linda Potter said. Potter found out about a volume of land patents containing the names of the commonwealth's earliest settlers, called the "Doomsday Book." The book, originally in the clerk's office, had been moved to Frankfort in the early 1970s. Microfilming at the Department of Libraries and Archives should be complete within two weeks, said Barbara Teague, state archivist and records administrator. The Doomsday Book contains the names of settlers who applied for land patents from 1779 through 1780, when Kentucky was still part of Virginia. Kentucky became a state in 1792. Kandie Adkinson, an administrative supervisor in the Kentucky Land Office, said the books are important for genealogists who want to document history and traditions of family members. "Additionally, by determining if an ancestor received a commissioners' certificate for settlement prior to 1792, individuals may qualify for membership in First Families of Kentucky," a hereditary society established in 2005, Adkinson said. Another record book recovered by Fayette County clerks, the "Land Entry Book," contains similar information from 1783 to 1784. Several years' worth of marriage licenses were also found in the county clerk's storage area. The clerk's office also recovered several books containing Fayette County school census records from 1896 to 1909 for both white and black students. The census books contain students' names, addresses, names of parents and siblings, and dates of birth. Potter said the school records are a "significant discovery" for black genealogists. "Unfortunately, the Fayette County clerk's office doesn't have a lot of records for black people to go on," she said.
