    1. [KYLOGAN] LDS Ancestral Lines a Problem

    3. Vickie: I apologize as more accurate wording would have been "They invite people to publish poorly-conducted research. Then they circulate it free of charge." I would not alter the last paragraph of my original statement, "I applaud the LDS efforts to make original source material available to us all, but they should not be publishing those genealogies when the people who produced them cannot back up their 'facts' with meaningful documentation." For the record, I have purchased data from LDS, so they do sell some information. Some of it is sitting on my bookshelf right now. Understandably they must charge for the cost of producing disks and mailing them. Nevertheless, they do sell them, though not for a profit. Also, I have used their facilities near my home and in Salt Lake City. Their church has done an excellent job of copying original source material and making it available to researchers and I think we all would agree we are thankful for that. It's just the circulation of fantasy information that is frustrating to serious researchers. Because the LDS Library is so well respected for the work it has done with original-source material, some people expect ALL LDS materials will be of equal value. For that reason much of the poorly-researched ancestral lines they are circulating will be accepted as fact. Therein lies the problem. The only time you pay for anything is at the local family history centers to order in microfilm or microfiche for a nominal fee, mainly just to cover the postage and if you make any copies again at a very nominal fee and usually a lot cheaper then if you were to make a copy somewhere else. Their members are encouraged to submit what they have found and like everyone else the members are human and they make errors but at least it gives you a place to start. But what this person is talking about here with the 300 million new names are records that have been extracted and indexed and then linked to digitized actual microfilmed records that you can see for yourself and print off and do whatever you would like with them for places world wide and it is completely FREE of charge and they are adding to the records every month and it will stay FREE of charge. This link will also get you there: <http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#start > Just wanted to let people know that this is a wonderful service and I have found tons of actual records right from my own computer at home. There are so many absolutely ridiculous errors. They let any of their members publish anything, and then they duplicate it and sell it! I applaud the LDS efforts to make original source material available to us all, but they should not be publishing those genealogies when the people who produced them cannot back up their 'facts' with meaningful documentation. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jeannie Gregory-Fairchild" <looking4myfamily@insightbb.com> To: <kybath@rootsweb.com>; <kylogan@rootsweb.com>; "'Sandi Gorin'" <sgorin@glasgow-ky.com>; <kysimpso@rootsweb.com>; <kywarren@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, April 30, 2010 3:51 PM Subject: [KYWARREN] Family Search Adds 300 Million Names > > > > > FamilySearch Adds 300 Million Names > > > > FamilySearch, the world's largest repository of genealogical information, > today announced it will release records containing 300 million names that > can now be researched online for free. > > > > Jay Verkler, president of Family Search, the genealogy division of The > Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, said these records and > millions > of names are being indexed, digitized and published through > FamilySearch.org. > > > > The records contain information genealogists would have had to > painstakingly > pick through to find an ancestor's name or they would have had to contact > a > specific government agency or travel to the area of study to research. > Among > the indexed records are the 1935 South Dakota state census; Washington, > D.C., deaths and burials 1840-1964; and Utah marriages, 1887-1966. > > > > Family Search has established a temporary website, fsbeta.FamilySearch.org > for the newly released names.
