Some of my ancestors were listed as "slave owners" on the census for Logan County, Kentucky. In 1851 the family moved to Illinois, along with several other Logan County families. Most of them sided with the union, even though they had slaves in Kentucky. What was the normal procedure upon leaving Kentucky in those days? 1. Was it possible to free your own slaves, before leaving? 2. Bring them with you to the north and free them? 3. Sell them to another person in Kentucky? Were there records for these kinds of precedings? Thank you very much. Tom D.
