If you go to "kygenweb.net" they have listings of all Kentucky newspapers that are availbale for interlibrary loans. I checked Russellville city for newspapers.. they list the "Russellville Herald and Enterprise for the dates of 1890-1891. You can go there and check for county papers. Also you can mail a request to the "Logan County Library" 201 West 6th Street 42276-1411. They have an index of obituaries. They also keep an indes of subjects. They charge $.25 a copy. But recheck it for yourself, if you know it maybe in the county. there may other newspapers listed. You can also write the Russellville library. Were any newspapers published in Logan Co., KY in the years above? I am looking for information concerning the death of Silas M. Thomas. Deeds recording the division of his real property can be found in 1892. On one of the deeds his name is Silas M. G?....... Judy Lyne believes the name is Gilbert, but there are too many letters in it for it to be Gilbert. Thanks for any information. I am trying to find the names of his parents.

In my search have found same thing about possible connections in the area of Butler Co. My proven line goes back to Col. John W. Porter and Sarah Clark in mid 1700's Prince Edward co. Vir. I have the line going on back to Ireland and then England. At the same time there is another group that I have ID'ed the top of it so far is HUGH PORTER AND MARY in the early 1700's Besides locations have not been able to prove any other connection. One thing I noted many years ago, is that most family lines form bonds with other family lines, they marr back and forth many times and as time moves on they made the move westward each time togather.... The second families are not the same in the John Porter and Hugh Porter lines...

The wife is not named and the marriage is not recorded in the county marriage book. I have 7 children including a Rezin/Reason Shipley Porter who was listed in the 1860 Logan Co census and murdered there in 1867. The others were James, William, Joseph Robert, Mary and Ann. I do not know much anything about Reason Porter. However - there was a Reason/Rezin Porter in Prince Edward Co VA prior to 1800. He is listed as an educator in the county history and was referred to in a deed involving some of John Porter's land. From the hip I recall that John Porter transferred land on Vaughn Creek to a son indicating the property line ran along that of Rezin Porter. This has always intrigued as it indicates other Porters in [very] close proximity to John Porter in PECoVA. The assumption that John & Mary Porter had only 8 children arises from the John M Porter 1872 memo and the Dobbins Bible. The same number but with some different names is found in the History of Greene County [GA]. As noted in posts above, several of us believe that the John and Hugh Porter lines share common ancestors, but without proof. The split along religious and moral beliefs by 1860 made the family relationships more estranged. I suspect that the 1804 Reaso/Rezin Porter is related to one or both of the PECoVA lines then in Logan Co KY, but which?

Its one of the best reasons for maintaining a second, free email service, such as Juno. As to the Porters, I am of the John Porter line in Prince Edward Co VA at its creation in 1754-55. Six of the 8 children were in Logan Co KY by 1800 I keep data on several separate Porter lines in the Logan-Butler-Ohio-Warren Co KY area 1800-1880 to keep track of who belongs where. By my count there were at least five lines. Of them, I suspect that the John & Hugh Porter ones share common ancestors, but lack proof. Certainly they intermarried in KY. The others arrived from states other than VA and are, therefore, less likley candidates for my line. But I do have some data on them. Always happy to swap. Email me at [email protected] JTL

I am descended from James S. Porter (b. 1775 in VA) who was in Logan County, KY in 1810 ... TN by 1818 (at least in Robertson County anyway, but possibly other counties) ... back to Logan county in 1840 and then on to Trigg County, KY by 1850, Any help sorting all the Porter lines out is very ... VERY ... welcome. <grin> Have a child of James S. Porter to add ... Reason Shipley Porter born 1817 died 1865. Recently got together with another researcher and it would appear - by way of naming patterns in this family - that he is indeed a child of James S. Porter. A son of James S. Porter ... James C. Porter ... named one of his sons Reason Shipley Porter at his birth in 1848. Look forward to hearing from you.

Richardson. I'm related by marriage to this Porter family and would love to hear about any descendants. I'll share what I have as well. Susan A. Richardson's mother is reportedly Charity White. I don't have her dad yet. James C. Porter's father was James S. Porter and I'm working on a theory that he wasn't married twice, as it usually reported, but possibly three times, including a marriage that is reflected in the 1810 census of Logan county that doesn't include any of the known children. I also recently made contact with a Porter researcher that has an earlier Reason Shipley Porter (b. 1817) as one of the earlier children of James S. Porter. James C. Porter also had a son he named Reason Shipley Porter, but he was born in 1848. Lots of coincidences and your info could add some more pieces to the puzzle.

We are looking for new members to join the association and to also join in the search for all those with a GRAVES connection. This is old info to many of you but please indulge the email. For information please go to http://www.gravesfa.org and just click away on the topics all you wish and learn more and more about the Graves family. Ken Graves, Executive Director, GFA, has undated material as near as a couple of weeks ago. We are looking for direct Graves MALE descendants to become involved in the DNA analysis project. When you go to www.Gravesfa.org click on the DNA analysis project and then once there look around, read, and study what Ken has done on DNA research. One of the topics is the DNA Testing Sponsorship Fund. You can view recent upgrades paid for by contributors to the fund. The list includes the genealogy of the recent contributor or recipient. Donations are accepted by check or CC. You can use PayPal for CC transactions. How to do this is in the information furnished when you click on the testing scholarship project. I realize due to Hurricane Katrina and Rita that many are maxed out on donations but the fund is presently $96 in the red (this means Ken Graves paid out of his pocket) and we have many others wishing to take the DNA test but need some assistance. IF you can afford the tests please follow the instructions when you click on the DNA analysis project or contact Ken by clicking on his email address from the web site. You do not need to be a Graves to belong to the association or donate $10, $25, $100 or whatever to the project. If you are interested in your Graves connection this will provide scientific proof of connections. Thank you. Ron Graves GFA Volunteer
Some of my ancestors were listed as "slave owners" on the census for Logan County, Kentucky. In 1851 the family moved to Illinois, along with several other Logan County families. Most of them sided with the union, even though they had slaves in Kentucky. What was the normal procedure upon leaving Kentucky in those days? 1. Was it possible to free your own slaves, before leaving? 2. Bring them with you to the north and free them? 3. Sell them to another person in Kentucky? Were there records for these kinds of precedings? Thank you very much. Tom D.
I have recently purchased a book CARGILL/CARGILE/CARGAL by Patty Barthall Myers which lists the family of William Fletcher and Margaret Cargill. William was a captain in the Rev. War, born in Stafford Co.. VA in 1758, served in Wilkes Co., NC during Rev. He lived in GA, SC, KY and TN before moving to Jackson Co. AL where he filed a pension claim in 1818. At that time he was married to a Patsy whose maiden name is not stated. Are there any records for him in Logan Co., KY? Thanks for any information.
