    1. Early Lincoln County Carters - Part 3 (final)
    2. John Carter
    3. Early Lincoln County Carters - Part 3 John "Dump" Tinsley Carter was my Grandfather. John T. was born on December 30, 1873 in Boyle County, Kentucky. He later moved to Yosemite, Kentucky with his family in 1884 at the age 11. Yosemite was a bustling community at that time due to an expanding lumber industry. John had an accident involving the dump door on a railroad car while working in Casey County. The door cut off part of his heel and caused him to walk with a limp. His brother-in-law, Clay Harvey Vest, nicknamed him "Dump" and this name stuck with him until his death. He married Francis "Fannie" Gay Williams on September 21, 1903 in Casey County, Kentucky. John and Fannie moved to Burnside, Kentucky sometime around 1903. John was the superintendent of the Burnside Veneer Company at Burnside, Kentucky, Pulaski County. Fannie was born on July 07, 1878 in Casey County, Kentucky. They lived near the intersection of what is today U.S. 27 and French Avenue in Burnside. Together they had five children: Joseph Carter Born: July 20, 1904 Pulaski County, Kentucky (Burnside) Died: September 11, 1989 Phoenix, Arizona Married: Bennie Thompson William Bill Carter Born: November 21, 1905 Pulaski County, Kentucky (Burnside) Died: August 1987 Salt Lake City, Utah Married: Irene Wilcoxen Clifton Paul "Tay" Carter Born: August 18, 1907 Pulaski County, Kentucky (Burnside) Died: May 1980 Davidson County,Tennessee (Nashville) Married: Muriel Lester Ella Carter Born: May 25, 1910 Pulaski County, Kentucky (Burnside) Died: July 03, 1910 Pulaski County, Kentucky (Burnside) Married: Died as a baby. Bessie Gay Carter Born: August 16, 1914 Pulaski County, Kentucky (Burnside) Died: 1970 Billings, Montana Married: Fred Moulton Fannie Gay Williams passed away in Burnside on January 06, 1921. She was buried at Green River Christian Church, Yosemite, Kentucky next to her daughter Ella. John Tinsley Carter met and married Icalona Buckner on March 01, 1923 in Pulaski County. Icalona was a widow raising two small children. Icalona was the seventh child of Phillip Harrison Buckner and Lucinda Adkins' twelve children. She was born on September 15, 1895 in Coal Creek, Tennessee (now Lake City). She married Charles "Charlie" Duff on October 02, 1918 in Scott County, TN. Charlie was killed in a mining accident near Coal Creek, Tennessee in Scott County on February 15, 1922. Charlie was buried at Old Beech Grove Cemetery - Scott County, TN. Icalona had two children from her marriage to Charlie Duff. They were Christine and Carrol (m) Duff. They lived in a large Victorian house (built in 1895) on West French Avenue in Burnside. John built a small log cabin on the property from the centers of poplar logs that remained after the veneer was turned off in 1939. Both houses remain in the family. John T. Carter and Icalona had 2 children: 1) Anna Lucille Carter Born: September 23, 1926 Died: August 18, 1929 (Died of Diphtheria) 2) R. Carter (my father) John Tinsley Carter was a member of Burnside Masonic Lodge #634. He passed away on January 17, 1947 in Burnside, KY at the age of 74. 1. Early Lincoln County Carters - Part 2
    2. John Carter
    3. Early Lincoln County Carters - Part 2 John Ellison Carter was my Great Grandfather. John was born June 18, 1841 in the Houstonville area of Lincoln County. John married Melipsia Wright on November 10, 1863 in Boyle County. Melipsia just disappeared. She probably passed away shortly after their marriage. On 8/10/1862, at age 21, John enlisted in the 9th Regiment, Kentucky Volunteer Cavalry. He was assigned to Company I. On 16 August 1862, he was listed as a deserter. Affidavits from doctors and fellow soldiers show that he had caught pneumonia and was hospitalized during this period of absence. On 14 August 1862, Corporal John E. Carter was listed as a deserter again at Crab Orchard, Kentucky. Affidavits from this period indicate that John had fell off a horse and injured his back. He was unable to ride, so his unit left him. He later returned to the unit and was assigned "light duty" for the duration of the war. On 21 August 1863, he was mustered out as a private. While being hospitalized, he was attended by Joanna Crutchfield Davenport Rains. Joanna was a widow and working in a hospital in Danville, KY. John and Joanna were married on October 20, 1864 in Danville. Joanna was the daughter of Alexander Davenport and Mary Lee(s) Nield. They were married on March 29, 1839 in Stanford, Lincoln County. Joanna was married to Joshua Rains on June 25, 1860 in Boyle County. They had one son, James, born July 10, 1861 and died September 09, 1882. James lived with John and Joanna until maturity. John and Joanna lived in Boyle County Kentucky 1863-1884, then 1884-1902 in Casey County Kentucky, and finally 1902-1913 Pulaski County, Burnside until their deaths. They show up in the 1870 Boyle County Census, Perryville District and 1880 Boyle County Census, Mitchellsburg District. Together they had 5 children: 1. Robert B. "Bob" Carter Born: July 21, 1865 Boyle County, Kentucky Died: July 11, 1902 Casey County, Kentucky Married: Zerelda Ann Vest on October 02, 1893 in Casey County Born: November 11, 1869 Casey County, Kentucky Died: May 05, 1912 Casey County, Kentucky 2. 3. Dear Groups, I'm sending this out to: 1) Generate some activity 2) Learn more! This post will cover all the above lists. It is in several parts. Early Lincoln County Carters - Part 1 My Great Grandfather was John "Jack" Carter. He married Martha Ann Alford on December 21, 1832 in Lincoln County. I know a very little about Jack Carter and his family. The 1850 Lincoln County Census (family 161-161 District 1) says both were born in Kentucky. Jack was 49 and Martha Ann was 40 when the census was taken. The actual Census is included below. I would love to hear from other decendents of Jack. The 1850 census shows 2 Carter families at the address at the time. I have no information on the second family. The name Jack comes from my Great Grandfather's death certificate as "Jack" being his father. Mother was listed as "unknown". The Census lists one of his children, Jno, as being 9 at census time. Jno was John Ellison Carter. John Ellison Carter, I know considerably more about. He was my Great Grandfather.
