I have a marriage of a Celia Hamilton marrying a Jacob Carpenter, in Lincoln Co, in 1822. Jacob and James Taylor posted bond and Willis Shackleford was the witness. I would like to find if Celia Hamilton's parents were James & Cecelia (Collier) Hamilton of Lincoln & Pulaski Co. While the list is hopping and I know there are others out there reading. I'm also searching for information on Hamilton, Collier/Colyer, Whitley -----Original Message----- From: YR1KYARCUZ@aol.com <YR1KYARCUZ@aol.com> To: KYLINCOL-L@rootsweb.com <KYLINCOL-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Sunday, February 14, 1999 1:38 AM Subject: Surnames >I am searching these early Pioneer Families of Lincoln County, Kentucky. > >Carpenter, Logan, Miller, McKittrick, Alcorn, Givens, McCormack, Eubanks, >McClure, Shields > >Let me know if you have any questions. > >Susan > >

Hi, I need help in determining which part of Lincoln county the following tax commissioners covered? 1792 William Reed 1793 William Pawling 1802 Hugh MaGill 1803 John Jones 1804 G.M. (Does anyone know whose initials these would have been in 1804) 1805 Hugh McGill 1806 Hugh McGill I am trying to determine where in Lincoln County my ancester resided? It is probably in a portion of Lincoln County that is now Casey County. Any help appreciated.
Seeking info on Fielding Withers, born some time after 1810 in VA. He married Lucy James in Lincoln County in 1834, and appears on the 1835 Lincoln County tax list. By 1840 he was living in Vanderburgh County IN. Any help would be appreciated! Jane
I'm reposting this in case someone new hasn't seen it. I'm looking for ancestors of my great grandmother, Sidney Warren, married to Wallen W. Baker, born Sept. 9, 1837, Tennessee. The only thing I know about Sidney is that she was in Crab Orchard, Ky. in 1867, when my grandmother, Caroline Baker was born. Any info appreciated. Navada Gibson Heflin. There may have been an additional child, Joseph T., who died in 1912. Several of these children listed above moved to Indian Territory, which is now Choctaw Co, OK; however, it is thought some returned to KY. There is also listed in Lincoln Co KY a Benjamin Franklin Routon b. 4 Sept 1841, Lincoln Co, KY, son of James Routon and Sarah Anderson. Am thinking perhaps James was a brother to my Benjamin and Sarah could have been a sister to my Eliza Anderson. My Benjamin and family listed on 1860, Stanford, Lincoln Co, KY census; in 1850 they are listed in Russell Co, KY, so apparently moved back to Lincoln Co. Other Routons in Lincoln Co in 1860: Waynesburg: Charles, 30, b. KY, wife, May, 20, Pleasant, 21 (probably a younger brother of Charles), and Julia Ann, 1. Waynesburg: John, 50, b. Also info that Samuel Routon and Elizabeth Walker had the following children: John, Thomas, Samuel, Benjamin. A Benjamin M. I like this activity too. I'm researching the Jones & Williams families in early Lincoln Co., Ky. At least from the 1790's to the 1830's. Specifically I have Evan Jones & Thomas Williams & their families. Perhaps John Williams should be added to that list too. John & Thomas Williams were found in Casey Co., Ky. after Casey Co. was formed from Lincoln. Would like to hear from anyone who might be researching these families. Bernadine Teague
I just had to respond to some of the remarks that I have been hearing about doing research in Lincoln Co. I haven't ever tried to go through another person so I don't know what kind of problems you may have there, however, I have spent many a vacation week digging through the records in Lincoln Co. and have run into nothing but helpful people. Now I would like to post my surnames that I have been looking for and maybe I can get some more help on the difficult people I have as ancestors. RAINES, John A. b. 1809 - married Harriet BAILEY in Lincoln Co., KY. I think that Harriett's father was Ed/Edward Bailey from VA. She had a sister Mary that married Robert Raines (John's brother) I am looking for parents of John & Robert Raines and any other ancestors and also the wife of Ed Bailey and any other ancestors I can find. KIRKPATRICK,Jenkins - b. NC marreid Mariah HIATT in Lincoln Co., KY. Looking for parents of both. I think that David Kirkpatrick & Mary JENKINS from NC might possible be Jenkins parents. Would appreciate any information on these people and will share any/all information with anyone that is interested. Pamela K. Alves palves@henderson.net

Some of you may already been most familiar with the work of Dr. Willard Rouse Jillson, who published books on KY Land Grants. These documents are arranged by Grants, beginning with those issued by VA before KY became a state. The Grant is listed by warrants given to reward men who served in the Rev. War. They could either claim the land or sell the warrant. Therefore looking for a deed for the land becomes important but the books by Jillson lists the warrant and later when KY became a state, the warrants were issued in various parts of the state. Later even the counties issued grants of land. These are excellent references and can be obtained thru an interlibrary loan from your local library. After you have located your ancestor's land grant or warrant, you can then order a copy of such from the Office of the Secretary of State, Capitol Bldg., Frankfort, KY 40501 for about $2.00 per grant or warrant. For those of us who are out of state, it might save some time and frustration. It is not a perfect solution but it is a good reference to the early settlers of Lincoln County.
Thank you for supporting me in the quest to get more postings to this critical list. Saw some familiar names-- Hi, Nancy and Lana. I have some Colvin marriages but none that are of the county. Mahala Stevens of Kentucky, Athens County, Ohio and Wayne county, Illinois married a Colvin and sired two children---Polly and Martha Colvin born in 1847 and 1848 resp. Cassandra Van Cleve(b. 1802) md Thomas Taylor--- but again not of the county. All of the documents I located myself by searching the courthouse in Stanford. There was a lady that I contacted who does reserach and is trying to stir up the Gen. Society to get more computer literate. She sent me a document on RICHARD SINNET that I already had, but she is continuing to keep her eye open for me. The poor lists were people who applied to the county in order to petition the government for land. They needed to show that they had not owned land and that they couldn't afford the state price-- whatever that was. They received up to 400 acres and the land was prime!! The county and deputy surveyor would go out and survey tracts of land and put them in a book. the Books are located in Lincoln County, KY even though at the time the land was in Virginia. I think what we need to do is to start to see what county References are available out there. If there is already a site that has this posted--- please let me know and I will stop posting info. Candee

I am sorry. My message about Kentucky being Virginia in the 1780s did not come across quite right. What I meant to say is that, when yours were in Ketucky in the 1780s, you want to also check Virginia records. In fact, they often had to travel back to Virginia for court business. Better? Hazel
You need to forward the actual message to the abuse address. You can also use Postmaster@(the ISP's name the message came from) For example, If the message was posted from: nastyone@spam.com forward the message received to: abuse@spam.com and or to: postmaster@spam.com It really does work. I do this everytime there is spam. Put a brief explanation in you forward. I usually explain that the mail was unsolicited and came to a genealogy list that subscribe to. Ask that they please do something about it. Don't answer the spammer, because then they have your address and you often times continue to get spam. Nancy: benttree@bright.net
Remember that, in the 1780s, Kentucky was Virginia. Hence, unless you have an actual county that you know did not get cut into the state of Kentucky, they could have been far from where you think they were. Hazel
