For several years I have been gathering material on the education history of Lewis County. One person I am researching at present is the abolitionist, Rev. John G. Fee, founder of Berea College. Fee came to Maysville around the time of the Civil War and lived in the Newtown area of the city. He found Maysville not very accepting of his abolitionist views and he moved to neighboring Lewis County (on Cabin Creek), where he developed a small community called Feetown, later known as Cottageville. What I am trying to learn is: during what years did he live in Lewis Co., did he establish a school at Feetown, and what event(s) precipitated his departure from Lewis County? I have heard that even though Lewis County was solidly Union in the Civil War, they did not welcome Fee and his abolitionist views.
