Dear Researchers of the Lewis County, Kentucky Mailing List, The Lewis County physician C.N. MADDY, whose Post Office was Vanceburg, Kentucky in 1883, first became acquainted with my third-great grandfather William COOPER in 1865, when the doctor was called to treat Mr. COOPER for eye and ear problems resulting from a gunshot wound to the forehead during the Civil War. Dr. MADDY provided an affidavit dated 19 Feb 1883, for William COOPER's Pension Application. In the testimony, Dr. MADDY stated that the patient [William COOPER] had been living in Dr. MADDY's home[!] since June 1882, while the doctor treated him. The wording of the affidavit suggests that Mr. COOPER was still being kept in Dr. MADDY's home at the time of the writing of the affidavit [Feb 1883]. That is why I have now embarked on a study of C.N. MADDY, in the hope that I will learn more about my third-great grandfather William COOPER's life, especially his [COOPER's] whereabouts in 1880! Of course, the ultimate would be to hear that Dr. MADDY's daily medical journal was intact! [Dream on!] Please contact me if you have any suggestions or information, and we can work on this together. Thank you for your help! Randal W. Cooper <[email protected]> Lorain, Ohio
