    3. That road-that buffalo trace- from Vanceburg>Clarkville [burg?] on to Williamsburg =Orangeburg is the earliest recorded road in Lewis Co, and one of the eariest in n Ky. I'm guessing it ran on to Mays Lick, and on to the Lower Blue Licks. No,I think Mud Lick was an original name. It may be the Mud Lick, where my many great uncle,John Sappington,Jr escaped from Indian capture -down in Estill Co,1780-1782. When you have a salt lick favored by buffalo for many years in an area on normal topsoil, the biffalo tracked the mud away on their feet, and the lick became hollowed out, sometimes to 2-3 acres. And,with the buffalo gone, the area soon became a bog. Cloverlick,on the farm my dad grew up on,had became a bog and they fenced it's 2 acres from their pasture, because they lost cows in it. Indeed,my dad was a trapper as a boy,but that bog was considered too dangerous to trap mink or muskrats. Long hunters, floating down the Ohio,or other rivers, checked the waters entering the river from creeks and runs. They were looking for muddy water-muddied by buffalo up-creek at a lick. Many of the creeks 1st named Muddy Creek picked up later names. "Seedtime on the Cumberland" gives a 1st hand discription of the French Lick,at Nashville,Tn,by George Morgan, before, and after the buffalo were gone.. On Mon, 19 Nov 2001 08:24:45 -0500 "K.
