The Lewis County court met at the home of Oke Hendrickson at Poplar Flat for about two years before Clarksburg was officially selected as the county seat. Hendrickson donated a tract of land and laid out a proposed village named Mt. Vernon, but the court voted to move to Clarksburg anyway.
