    1. [ KYLEWIS] Quincy, Lewis County, Kentucky: How Did it Get its Name?

    3. Dear Subscribers to the Lewis County, Kentucky Mailing List, After an absence of some months, I have resubscribed to the Lewis County, Kentucky Discussion Group. I have not been absent from research, just absent from this particular Mailing List. I am taking another concentrated look at the Ohio River community of Quincy, Lewis County, Kentucky. This river community is located in the "Arm" of Lewis County (the narrow eastern end), between Saint Paul and Garrison, and is upriver from Vanceburg. Can anyone help? I remember reading about a group of New England capitalists who launched a quarry operation in the area that became Quincy, year unknown to me, and named the community "Quincy" after Quincy, Massachusetts. Unfortunately, I can't remember where I read that, or even if this is accurate. Can anyone tell me how and when Quincy, Kentucky got its name? Thank you for your help on this. Quincy was not incorporated until 1861, but I think that the community of Quincy was called such for years before that. It is good to be back with the Lewis County researchers, and I look forward to delving into the history of Quincy, which means of course the residents of Quincy! My third-great grandfather William COOPER lived in Quincy from about 1852 to about 1859, and from 1865 to sometime in the 1880's. In the 1870 Census of Quincy, William COOPER was recorded as living in the home of (Steamboat Captain) John BOYLE. Surnames of special interest in my research of Quincy are: BOYLE, WOODWORTH, HACKWORTH, MCKEE, FRUIT, TRUITT, THOMPSON, DAVIDSON, MADDY and AUMILLER. Naturally, ANY surname associated with Quincy is important in this study, as well. Thank you for any suggestions or information you may have! Sincerely, Randal "Randy" W. Cooper Lorain, Ohio

    3. Hi Randall: You might get some help by going to the website for the Lewis County Herald at www.lewiscountyherald.com/ When I checked this site this morning, there was a story about a man missing from Quincy. But more than that, Dr. William Talley, a well-known historian and author who probably knows more about Lewis County than any other person, is a frequent contributor to this newspaper. Perhaps you can get information from the newspaper (there e-mail address is on the website) or get Dr. Talley's e-mail address or snail mail address. Good luck. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Randal W Cooper" <rwcooper@kellnet.com> To: <KYLEWIS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, July 26, 2001 11:19 AM Subject: [ KYLEWIS] Quincy, Lewis County, Kentucky: How Did it Get its Name? > Dear Subscribers to the Lewis County, Kentucky Mailing List, > > After an absence of some months, I have resubscribed to the Lewis > County, Kentucky Discussion Group.
