Hermon, Sorry, but that son Basil was not Brown--- Basil Burris Applegate (1810 Fleming - 1886 Lewis). Father Benjamin "of Mason" bought land in Fleming in 1797 and 1830's to Lewis Co, Ky. Grandfather Jacob Applegate(1746 NJ-1819 Mason Co, KY) was known to be in town of Washington in Mason Co. Immigrants Thomas Applegate (1604 Eng-1662 Long Island) & Elizabeth Wall had several children . Oldest son BARTHOLOMEW (1620 Eng-1690 NJ)is "supposed" to be my ancester-his descendants were in NJ for 4-5 generations. My Benjamin reportedly b. 1774 Frederick/Berkley VA/Wva Son THOMAS II (1698 will proven before Andrew Bowne, and others) is the ancester of the SW PA Applegates I have found no records in SW PA for MY branch of Applegates- except that story of men carrying a Jacob Applegate with a broken leg from somewhere SW PA to near Hagerstown MD. Benjamin Applegate was born 1774 -reportedly VA- Berkley WVA, so father Jacob would be not far from Hagerstown. I've often wondered what he was doing in PA? Perhaps visiting relatives? Or scouting out land? Who knows at this time. Yes, I agree with you that the name Walter may be from the Walls of NJ . There were numerous Applegate-Wall marriages for many generation but all that I have tracked have been Wall marriages into the line of Thomas Applegate II. Some of that line was in SW PA, then Mason, Brown Co OH etc. It bothers me that I find no other Walter/s in my line but several in the descendants of Thomas II. My current problems in proving the lineage are several. All too many people parrot what is on that "Applegates in America" website without any supporting documents. I have found most of the Kentucky records beginning 1797 and very early records (1600's-early 1700's). But I need many more for that late 1700's time period. The SW Pa Applegates in later 1700's are well documented in numerous historic writings and records. But the VA/Md records have been illusive. I have a few but sorting out the several Jacobs and numerous Benjamins is difficult without many more. And to complicate the search I find evidence that at least one of the SWPA Applegates was in Berkley -For instance, Benjamin Applegate (1725 - 1823 SW Pa), wife Rebecca Wall, oldest son Richard Derrick Applegate was reportedly born in 1764 Frederick/Berkley Co VA. Richard Derrick died Mason Co, Ky.. Some of his descendants in Brown Co, OH - one being his son Benjamin Applegate b. 1789 Allegheny Co,PA. d. 1845 Brown Co, married to a another Rebecca Wall Oh, what a tangled web. Any and all records of the Upper Potomac region of VA/MD records will be gratefully accepted.
