    3. Cabin Creek Marker #143 erected by the KY Department of Highways says: (it was) "Early point of entry into Kentucky for explorers and pioneers. From it marauding indians forded across the Ohio River. War Roads marked with drawing of animals, the sun, and the moon led from its mouth to Upper Blue Licks. The Creek was 20-25 feet across when I was there in late April. ---- Researching: Sparks of KY; Potter of NY; Oppenborn of FL; McCoy of Greene County,PA; Tuphorn of Wisconsin; Seaman of NJ, WV, KY, and "ye Westward". 1. [KYLEWIS-L] Steamboats Docked at Vanceburg and Environs
    2. Randal W Cooper
    3. Dear Researchers of the Lewis County, Kentucky Mailing List, I would like to learn the names of the steamboats which were docked at Vanceburg, Lewis County, Kentucky or upriver as far as Portsmouth, Ohio, between 1840 and 1861. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can gain this information? The one idea I have is to carefully read every page of Way's Packet Directory and also Lytle's List, looking for First Home Ports in the described section of the Ohio River. Patience will be the number one virtue in the proposed endeavor. Thank you! Randal W. Cooper <[email protected]> Lorain, Ohio

    2. Randal: There is a steamship clearing house....I wrote to one years ago to find the registration on an OH steamship and they replied. However, all my stuff is packed (getting ready to "full time" in the RV) but any good library should have a book which lists all the associations in America....I believe I looked under "steamships" and came up with the address. 1. [KYLEWIS-L] Re: Cabin Creek/Quicks Run
    2. I was most interested to learn that Cabin Creek is in the vicinity of Quicks Run Road since the cemetery where Robert Viers and many of his relatives lie is on Quicks Run Road. I have been trying to determine the connection between William Veirs from Maryland who owned land in that area of the county and Robert Viers. It's more and more obvious that they were relatives, now I just have to keep searching for that one lone bit of information that links them together. It may be lost for ever in the Virginia county records burned during the War. Sue

    1. Re: [KYLEWIS-L] Re: Cabin Creek (Cottageville)
    2. Hi: The History of Lewis Co. by Ragan mentions Cabin Creek. "It used to be called Cabin Creek, but Mr. John G. Fee and his followers made an effort to have the name changed to Glenville, but were unsuccessful. The people of the vicinity persisted in calling it "Feetown" in derision. Strangers, in passing up and down the creek, would many of them get the idea that there were two places instead of one. They would get confused as to its location and distance away very naturally, but for quite a number of years this condition of affairs must be explained to all strangers when passing through. But in 1886 Mr. Thos. J. Tully, who was postmaster at Creek, succeeded in getting the name changed from Cabin Creek to Cottageville, and by the latter name it it is now quite well known throughout the country. Jean Hardyman

    1. [KYLEWIS-L] Benjamin WOODWORTH, 1860, Lewis Co KY, Mate on Steamboat
    2. Randal W Cooper
    3. Dear Researchers of the Lewis County, Kentucky Mailing List, Benjamin WOODWORTH was the Mate on a Steamboat on the Ohio River in 1860. He was enumerated in the 1860 Census of Lewis County, Kentucky, Dwellinghouse 1223, with $2000 in land and $1000 in personal property. He was 28 years old, born in Ohio. Elizabeth WOODWORTH was 21, also born in Ohio. Ruie C., female, was 11 months old, born in Ohio. Also in their home was Lydia JONES, 18, born in Kentucky. Two houses away, in Dwellinghouse 1221, lived Henry MCKEE and John BOYLE, who were business partners in Quincy, Lewis County, Kentucky, in land speculation and as merchants ["Traders"]. John BOYLE's obituary [he died in 1901] stated that he had been a steamboat captain "in antebellum days". Putting these facts together, we have a man who was a Steamboat Captain before the Civil War living two houses away from a man who was a Mate on a steamboat. Were these two men, Captain John BOYLE and Benjamin WOODWORTH, associated with the same steamboat? If so, what was the name of the vessel? Randal W. Cooper <[email protected]> Lorain, Ohio

    3. Cabin Creek is now known as Cottageville. It is on Cabin Creek Road just south of Route 984 which it joins amost at the Mason County line. On the map Route 984 appears to be the westward continuation of Quick's Run Road. T. Grant Maple

    3. There are some excellent maps available on USGenWeb, Kentucky state site. Click on "Maps". Next, click on "County Highway Maps". Then click on "Lewis". Wait a bit. The maps are very large, and doenload slowly, but have excellent detail. Scroll down below the state diagram with Lewis Co. in black, until county map appears. Scroll image left until "Trinity" is centered. Then scroll down past "Fearisville" to "Cottageville", present-day name for Cottage Creek. With very best regards, T. Grant Maple
