    1. [KYLEWIS-L] Re: Thomas Family in Lewis Co
    2. I recently found a listing of a THOMAS cemetery across the River in Scioto Co. It' interesting because it has several stones of people born during the 1700s and the rest of the graves are of the family of those people. Sue

    3. Suggest you stay at the Super 8, in Maysville, you are then within 25 miles of great Libraries and the Lewis Co., Adams Co and Brown Co Historical Societies. There is also a Best Western but found the people at the Super 8 super. If you need help with Maysville, Vanceburg Co. research suggest you contact Vickie Sapp at [email protected] She is very knowledgeable and rates are good. I am just waiting for her to pick up Frankfort area. There is nothing like the hands on and for about 50.00 a night and that includes coffee, toast and juice in the am - no room service you should stay at Super 8. I just got back and had a wonderful trip. The country is beautiful and the Ky people can't be beat. _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? 1. [KYLEWIS-L] AA highway in Lewis Co.
    2. << I have my doubts that.the new AA highway has a motel in Lewis Co. Maybe not a gasoline station. >> BEWARE on AA Highway in Lewis Co. Unless it has been expanded in the last two years, it stops in the middle of nowhere and only winding little country roads are avaible to get to I64. Of course, if someone is turning around and going back west, this is no problem. BUT, there is a speed trip in Lewis Co. As you leave a two-lane section and enter the three-lane section (middle lane a passing lane), DON'T exceed the speed the speed limit to pass that pokey truck that you have been behind for 20 minutes. They stop you if you go one mph over the limit. On the other hand, it is a beautiful ride.

    1. [KYLEWIS-L] Researching Lewis Co
    2. It's been 10 plus years since I made several trips, over several years, thru LEWIS Co hauling apples on RT 8 [10?]. And I know the new AA HIGHWAY has been built. It's vacation time, and those going to LEWIS CO to research need special instructions about food, lodging, and gasoline. So, somebody want to give instructions. I have my doubts that.the new AA highway has a motel in Lewis Co. Maybe not a gasoline station. In my day,I can remember only the CREMEY WHIP,on the great Vanceburg bypass,as a place to eat, other than general stores. Surely downtown VANCEBURG,has a place for jury, judge, and lawyers to eat. So,you probably want a MOTEL in GREATER MAYSVILLE,which includes Aberdeen,Oh, or in Portmouth,Ohio. And I'D scedule a few hours in Washington,s Maysville. It oce was the county seat for MASON,AND LEWIS CO. Maysville,Ky,has,on SUTTON STREET, the Mason Co Historical Soc LIBRARY. [and Museum] Anyway,LEWIS CO is rural. The long time cash crop of tobacco is in trouble[ smoked my last 3-17-94]. The steamboat days of the OHIO RIVER are over, but the OHIO RIVER VALLEY abounds in coal fired electricity generating plants for distant cities.

In the records which list Robert VIERS in the militia in Botetourt Co., Va. there is also a George CLARK and a Joseph CLARK listed as members of the 27th district, part of Capt. Baird's Company. The district sections were very small, there are only 15 men listed in the 27th. It's interesting to note that there were also three SMITHs, two MANNs and three McMURRYs listed among those 15 men. So, obviously this was a group of families. *************************************************************************** In the records from the Aug 1776 of an entire section of Frederick Co., Maryland (which is now part of Montgomery Co., Maryland) There is the following record: VEARES, Capt, William 41 Lien 17 William 15 John 13 Edward 12 Heszakiah 8 Solomon 6 Levy 4 Mary 36 Levy 7 An Infant Woodfield, Mariar 19 (a servant?) Rose, a Negroe 38 I really don't know the reason why there were two children named Levy, either a confusion on the part of the person who transcribed the records or the auditor making the census. Please note the spelling of the name. And also note that William is listed as a Captain. I suspect that his lands in Kentucky were Military lands ceded to him for his Rev War service. ********************************************************************************* I hope this is of interest and assistance to those who are tracing the VIERS lines and the CLARK lines. 2. Joy Coyan
    3. Sue, I agree with you that it is most likely that Samuel Clark was the father of George Clark who married Nancy Viers. I had contacted the DAR and while Samuel is a proven patriot, his line through George has never been proven, so there was no documentation in their records. Maybe there is someone out there who can help us prove this or someone who might have a marriage record for George Clark and Nancy Veirs! Lets hope so. Joy Coyan = Joy Coyan

    1. [KYLEWIS-L] Re: Cabin Creek and Re: WOLFE family Connection
    2. The Cabin Creek area was owned by William M. VEIRS as early as 1794. I am starting work on this and don't yet know the extent of his land in that area but it might have been extensive since he was fairly well-to-do. He actually lived in Maryland and may have never even visited Kentucky but his son Edward was the first schoolteacher in the area and his daughter Nancy (by his first wife) and her husband George CLARK moved into that area around 1800. Robert VIERS (quite likely a cousin or nephew of some sort) lived nearby on Quicks Run. Robert VIERS was most recently from the Botetourt/ Greenbrier Counties area. All I know is, Robert VIERS was born somewhere in Virginia. I don't yet know where or have any certainty as to his parents. Anyone trying to trace early settlers in that area might find it fruitful to check the Fredericktown area of Maryland and the two counties I mentioned in Virginia. RE: The Wolfe family mentioned recently. I noticed a first wife named Melinda (Melissa?) LEMONS. The LEMONS/LEMON/LEMMON family were early settlers in the Scioto County, Ohio area, east of Portmouth not far from the Ohio River. This wife almost certainly came from that family since the name is fairly rare in early records and they are the only ones I know of. My grandmother was a LEMON from that family. If anyone wishes to info, I have some on them, although it's sketchy and soon goes to a dead end. They were said to be Black Dutch, and were noted for being quite dark-skinned. My mother and her mother looked extremely like Native Americans, with deep golden skin, dark hair and eyes and even the oriental fold to their eyes. Sue Bishop

    1. Re: [KYLEWIS-L] Early Forts in what bcame LEWIS CO
    2. Few know more about the early stations,or forts in LEWIS CO,than me,and I don't know much. I know of 2,and think one in nw LEWIS CO likely. RAGAN called the one at the mouth of Quick's RUN just west of VANCEBURG 'BLOCKHOUSE" station. I had the good luck,to run into,-on-line, a QUICK descendant. - QUICK was taken captive, and taken to Canada and sold, and there remained to have descendants in Ontario. I think the Quick's and Stouts migrated there together. My particular interest is in JAMES MCQUEEN,at Queens,at the fork's of Quick's Run. He may be a many great uncle. At Concord,Ky was RCHARD GRAHAM's station. Site of Concord,Ky at mouth of Sycamore]Relatived of the Col WM CRAWFORD [1782 DEFEAT] tortured in "The Frontiersman" livd there. CRAWFORD, STEPHNSON,GRIMES,and who? Likely predated the fort at Manchester,on the Ohio side,as the GRAHAM people got 1st pick of the Ohio's bottoms. The Manchester people the hilltops. "GIFT RIDGE" for exampl. And Manchster might be the fort I predict in nw LEWIS cO. I have a rare name from very sw DEL-E SHORE MD. SMULLINS. I place I've seen it mentioned is in th "History of Lewis Co,KY." JANE SMULLINS m THOMAS HITCH-were in Mason in 1797.

    2. Long been tracing the parents of GEORGE BROWN,one of Lewis Co' 1st J.P'S .George had married his 1st-COONROD-wife south of Moorefield,WV-S Branch Potomac. Likely b 1767,though 1760 birth is used by some to squeeze him to a DAR story. Pretty hard to have a REV WAR SGT b 1767. Lived on Cabin Creek in e Lewis Co,and married his 2nd JOHN wife in Mason Co. Looking for hints, like who he migrated to Cabin Creek with,AND WHEN. 3-4 years after Lewis Co was formed,GEORGE moved 3 miles from where I type at Bethel,Clermont Co,Oh joining siblings, and perhaps his parents,THOMAS and MARY oSBORN[?]BALL? BROWN..At the time Lewis Co was formed, his aged parents lived on land adjoinging his BRO-IN-LAW James Sandusky's Station,se Millersburg,Bourbon Co Ky. George BROWN ,like far too many, lost his farm here at Bethel,Oh to land suit, and moved to RUSH CO,IND. Much in print about his parents, some parts of which are fiction. After many years,I still don't know where they lived before MOOREFIELD WV Rev War times. Baptist likely.

    1. [KYLEWIS-L] Doctor C.N. MADDY of Vanceburg, Lewis County, Kentucky
    2. Randal W Cooper
    3. Dear Researchers of the Lewis County, Kentucky Mailing List, The Lewis County physician C.N. MADDY, whose Post Office was Vanceburg, Kentucky in 1883, first became acquainted with my third-great grandfather William COOPER in 1865, when the doctor was called to treat Mr. COOPER for eye and ear problems resulting from a gunshot wound to the forehead during the Civil War. Dr. MADDY provided an affidavit dated 19 Feb 1883, for William COOPER's Pension Application. In the testimony, Dr. MADDY stated that the patient [William COOPER] had been living in Dr. MADDY's home[!] since June 1882, while the doctor treated him. The wording of the affidavit suggests that Mr. COOPER was still being kept in Dr. MADDY's home at the time of the writing of the affidavit [Feb 1883]. That is why I have now embarked on a study of C.N. MADDY, in the hope that I will learn more about my third-great grandfather William COOPER's life, especially his [COOPER's] whereabouts in 1880! Of course, the ultimate would be to hear that Dr. MADDY's daily medical journal was intact! [Dream on!] Please contact me if you have any suggestions or information, and we can work on this together. Thank you for your help! Randal W. Cooper <[email protected]> Lorain, Ohio
