Hello List, If someone has available the index to the 1900 Lewis County census index, I would appreciate a lookup. In the 1890 Veterans census there is a Jane M. Hardy living in Lewis County. I would like to know if she is still there in 1900. Thank you for any help! Linda
The address for the Vanceburg Library is 422 Second Street. phone # 606-796-2532 When I was there a couple months ago they told me that they close the library at 5:00 P.M. you might call ahead to double check. I live in Hamilton Oh and I went to I-275 to the Double A highway I believe that is ky 9 and took it all the way to the Vanceburg exit, then took it into town to Second Street. travel time is about a 1hr. to 1 1/4 hr from I-275 and AA interchange. If I'm not mistaken the Court House is just a couple blocks away on the same side of the street . FYI when I went down there I spoke to a Mr Forrest Foudray, he helps at the Historical Society and he let me know the the Society is open on Friday and Saturdays only. hope this helps a little. Good Luck!! If you go to the Historical Society tell Forrest I said Hi. (He's a distant cousin and helped a great deal in my research) roger boyes

Dear Subscribers to the Lewis County, Kentucky Mailing List, >From a posting by Dr. William Talley I have learned that John BRUCE, Junior (1777-1855) married Isabella BOYLE. John BRUCE, Junior left home in 1818 to attend the Alabama Land Sales near Florence, Alabama, and at Mussel Shoals on the Tennessee River. Later, upon his return from a trip to Texas, he moved his family to Lewis County, Kentucky in 1823. He received the first federal grant to rid the Ohio River of snags and dead trees in 1824. John BRUCE, Junior is buried in the Black/Bruce Cemetery near Saint Paul, Lewis County, Kentucky. -End Dr. Talley's Portion. Can anyone tell me who the parents of Isabella BOYLE were? I am seeking a connection between Isabella BOYLE and Samuel BOYLE. Samuel BOYLE was born about 1800 in Kentucky. Samuel BOYLE married Barzilla MURPHY in Garrard County, Kentucky in 1823. They had a son, John BOYLE, who was born in 1825. Samuel BOYLE lived in Garrard County, Kentucky until about 1833, when he moved to Clinton County, Indiana. Three of his children were born in Indiana: Alexander, Henry and Pleasant. About 1843, Samuel BOYLE left Indiana and returned to Kentucky, to Lewis County, on the Ohio River. Samuel BOYLE was enumerated in the 1850 Census of Lewis County, Kentucky, District One, page 215, dwellinghouse 163. Samuel BOYLE was fifty years old, born in KY, farmer. His wife Berzilla was included, as were the children. Son John BOYLE was 25, laborer. A daughter, Almanda, was 25(?). The text was difficult to read, due to fading ink and obscure handwriting. A son, Colerin(?) was 20. Robert was 18, a laborer, born in Kentucky. Thus far, I am the only researcher that I know of who is studying the life of Steamboat Captain John BOYLE (son of Samuel BOYLE and Barzilla MURPHY). John BOYLE married Catherine "Katie" HACKWORTH about 1865, possibly in Lewis County. John BOYLE lived in Quincy, Lewis County, Kentucky, through the 1860's and up to about 1875, when he moved to Ironton, Lawrence County, Ohio, and set up as a saloonist. He died in 1901 and was buried in Ironton. John BOYLE in 1860 was designated a "Trader". He was a resident of the Ohio River community of Quincy, Lewis County at the time. The obituary of John BOYLE stated that he was a steamboatman in antebellum days, but did not reveal where or when exactly. I am thinking that the term "Trader" may have meant a riverboat trader, in Johgn BOYLE's case. Riverboat traders went up and down the river, picking up goods to sell and marketing them at various places. Pittsburgh was a common destination for loading up. Cincinnati, too, was a beehive of activity. My goal is to uncover more details about the steamboat career of Captain John BOYLE. The possibility exists that John BRUCE, Junior had some role in Captain John BOYLE's choice of occupation. That is only a theory of mine, however. I am searching for anything that would shed light on John BOYLE's employment on the river. Thank you for any suggestions or information you may have! Sincerely, Randal "Randy" W. Cooper
Dear Subscribers to the Lewis County, Kentucky Mailing List, Jacob POWELL and William POWELL, ages 34 and 35, both born in Ohio, were listed as IRON MAKERS in the 1850 Census of District One, Lewis County, Kentucky, page 210, dwellings 111 and 112. William POWELL was recorded as possessing an estate valued at $7,000. Does anyone know the name of the iron furnace that these men worked at? I am not familiar with any iron furnaces in Lewis County, but I know that New Hampshire Furnace and Kenton Furnace in neighboring Greenup County were not very far away. Or, would the POWELLs have had an interest in an iron fuirnace of Adams County, Ohio, across the Ohio River? The POWELLs must have lived on or near the Ohio River, because an Ohio River steamboat pilot, Thomas COLLIER, lived seven households from Jacob POWELL and William POWELL. Thank you for any suggestions or information, and continued best wishes to the researchers of Lewis County! Sincerely, Randal "Randy" W. Cooper

Jane M. Gray Crouch married John Hardy in Boyd Co, KY in 1872. They relocated to Lewis Co. where John died in 1883. In 1890 Jane M. Hardy requested a Veterans pension for her lated husbands, John Hardy and Joseph C. Crouch. On the pension papers she listed her address in 1890 as Petersville, Lewis Co, KY. Witnesses on these papers were: Isacs W. Lykins and Clayborn Rigdon. Jane M. and John Hardy had the following children: Robert, Franklin b. 1876, Sarah M. b 1878. Charles b. 1880, Annie G. b. 1882. Does anyone on the list have any information on any of these Hardy's? Also, I would like to request a lookup in the 1900 census for this family and also in the 1890's veteran's census. Thank you for any help! Linda Gray Lawless --part1_111.3a4412a.28a41bd1_boundary--
Is anyone descended from any of the Griffiths? I found Hezekiah Griffith as co-administrator of the estate of John Maddox in 1824. Then I found him again where his dtr got a marriage license the day before Willliam Maddox got his; a double wedding? I'd just like to know more about the Griffiths. I found some from Frederick Co., MD. Is that the Lewis Co. Griffiths? I found a Hezekiah Griffith who died in Jefferson Co., Ohio. Is this the Lewis Co. Griffith? Katheryn Maddox Haddad
Hello All, This is being sent to you in case you haven't already heard about it before. I have just uncovered information that asks Kentuckians (or, I guess even people from out of the state of Kentucky) to let Kentucky's Task Force on Cemetery Preservation (Office of the Kentucky Attorney General) know about the location of Cemeteries which can allow the state of Kentucky provide proper aid, etc. The 38 member Task Force on Cemetery Preservation was formed by order of Gov. Patton sometime earlier this year. This sounds like a way to apply for aid to many of the historic & abandoned cemeteries throughout Kentucky. I know I have heard many persons on many of these mailing lists express concerns about the condition & care of old abandoned cemeteries here in Kentucky. There is a more detailed explanation at the following website (all or most questions you have can be answered when you visit this website): www.kyattorneygeneral.com/cemetery Time is short. From the above website, you can download a form to be filled out (or the form is also said to be available at the county judge's offices throughout Kentucky). IMPORTANT--This form must be filled out & submitted no later than August 15, 2001. So, if you have a cemetery (or cemeteries) within Kentucky that you are interested in having the State of Kentucky providing aid to, this form can filled out by any interested person & mailed as instructed (especially historic cemeteries that are overgrown, abandoned, and neglected). Hope this interests all of you. John Vice

Does anyone on this list have the Lewis County marriages, or at least an index who can tell me who Andrew Kirkpatrick married, and date (1835-1839)? I have requested this before, got a very nice response and have misfiled the information. Thank you, Wendy
This message is for Dee Danner who sent in a query in May. I just found your Benjamin Maddox by accident in Coles County, Illinois, 1850 census. Benjamin, 42, b. TN (is that right?) Nancy, 42, b. KY Fanny, 29, b. KY Wm. H., 27, b. KY Mary E., 24, b. OH Melinda E., 15, b. OH Amanda E., 14, b. OH Sarah C., 12, b. OH Benjamin F., 10, b. OH John H., 8, b. OH Barbary O'Neil, 90, b. KY You said in your query that Benjamin was the son of William Maddox. Where did you get this information? Also, where in Ohio were there? I believe your William Maddox b.c. 1780 was the brother of John Maddox b.c. 1780 (according to 1810 Lewis Co., census) and died 1824 in Lewis Co. I believe, but this is just a hunch right now, that your Wm. and my John were the sons of John Maddox who served at Herod's settlement (fort) in 1780. Soon after John received a warrant for Rev. War. service for land in Ky. but I do not know where yet. I am guessing present-day Lewis Co. Katheryn Maddox Haddad

Hello, list members. If anyone on the list has the 1860 Lewis Co., KY, census, please look up the following for me. Thanks in advance. Joan Miller Name requested: James Patton b. 1855
I had no idea someone would know where the private graves in the county would be too. Wow! Would your husband have any idea where the Maddox home graves were? I'm sure John Maddox who died in Lewis Co. 1824 would have been buried on his own property. Does someone have access to the Lewis Co. 1810 census with all its data? If so, would you check John Maddox (do not know which line he is on) and see if in the far right column it says he was collecting a Revolutionary War pension? Someone by that name somewhere in Ky. was. Thank you so much. Katheryn Maddox Haddad
