I have Maddox connected with GUNTER in Iowa but there were Maddoxes in Lewis County, KY as well. I have GUNTER in Lewis, Greenup Counties KY and ohio counties of Adams, Scioto across the river. Any connection between these Maddox families? Another name associated with Maddox could be ADLOFF and Parker. Peggy in CA
I think the Scotio, OH Maddoxes came from Shelby Co., Ky. Do you have any idea where Pea Ridge is and the John Madox Farm in Fleming Co.? I would guess the northwest corner along the Licking River. This is quite interesting. The Maddoxes were in SW Lewis Co. near both Mason and Fleming Co. They had land in all three counties. In Mason Co. were the following marriages: 1800: William Wheatley to Mary Casleman, Marriage Bk., pg. 7 1803: Elizabeth Wheatley to Vincent Cleaney, pg. 12 & 60 1806: Mary Wheatley to James Allen, pg. 10 I do not know if they are the same family as Wheat, just spelled differently, or not. It seems I ran into someone else with a Maddox-Wheat connection in Fleming. Please send me what you know. My sister and I plan to go to Fleming Co. some time this winter to research there. Where do you live? I followed up on him because of his seeming relationship (close friends? relatives?) to my Maddoxes. The inventory to his will is in Will Book A,Pg. 27-29 in Lewis Co. I did not copy the sale of his estate because my ancestor, John Maddox, was only an appraiser, but I'm sure it is there, possibly right after the appraisal. Write to the Lewis Co. Courthouse and ask for the above pages. If I remember right, they charge 50c per set of papers on the same subject, plus a stamped, self-addressed envelope. While in Mason Co. last summer I photocopied something from 82 and 83 (either a will book or Order Book - and the photocopy is smudged and it may actually be pg. 182 and 183). I think it was the Order Book. Anyway, it is a list of expenses for the heirs of John Phillips in behalf of the Heirs of Gab'l Phillips, Dec'd. George Shepherd was the guardian of the heirs of Gabreal Phillips. So, both the Phillips and Shepherd descendants might be interested in sending for this. Hello, The court order noted below, where can I find a copy of the whole transcript. I have a Solomon Shepherd in Lewis, Mason & Fleming county that I am trying to figure out more about. He first arrived in Mason Co. in 1795. Thanks for any help. Mark Shepherd "K. This is a quote from the court order regarding a road to be built in 1796 (at that time, Mason Co., later part of Lewis Co.): "SOLOMON SHEPHERD, JOHN OHARROW, HENRY PARKER and GABRIEL PHILIPS or any three of them being first Sworn are appointed to review a way proposed for a Road from Maddux to Williamsburg as far as Rich Land Creek and make Report of the Conveniances and Inconveniances attending opening the same." Does this help in identifying Maddux? Katheryn
I've forgotten how to be removed from the list. Help
Your ancestor may have purchased something at my ancestor's estate sale which was filed "At a County Court begun and held for Lewis County in the Town of Clarksburg." [Yes, I'm the one that was asking about Clarksburg.) He was John Maddox and he lived in the SW corner of Lewis Co. near Mason and Flemming Co. Probably only neighbors came to the sale. I read this off the original and sometimes could not make out a name because it was faded too much. Take a look: Thomas Maddox Hezekiah Griffith Coleman Riddle Elizabeth Maddox Louis Helms William Murphy George Fox Nathaniel Luinn John Wallingsford ___ Hurst Isaiah D______ Henry C. Martin Daniel Goodhire Joseph Anderson Samuel Criswell Patterson Brandenburg James Hughbanks William Maddox James Hinton William Porter (?) Elijah Mack William Burns John Renenesett (?) Owen Samuels (?) John Becket William Hamblin Elizabeth Hinson Herbert Silvy Hope this helps someone. If anyone recognizes a name I read wrong, please send me a correction. Katheryn

Diane: Dr. Talley forwarded a copy of the Clarksburg article as an attachment from his computer. Thank you for your offer. Ron
Diane: Thank you. Dr. Talley indicated there had been a recent article discussing the establishment of Clarksburg as the county seat prior to it being at Vanceburg. I was hoping to read about that perspective. Would greatly appreciate receiving the article if you can locate it. Will be happy to reimburse any expense. My address is: Ronald L. Whitaker 50 Walker Street Athens, OH 45701 I haven't been to the Lewis County Historical Society for 4 or 5 years. What's the cousin's name? Thanks again. You might try Sandy Springs, Adams Co. Ohio. I have family of Zornes in the grave yard there. It is a large German site and is just across the Ohio river from Lewis Co. Ky. so some of your people may be there. Don Clark

Hi William. Tried the Lewis County Herald search engine to locate the article on the establishment of Clarksburg without success. Do you have the URL for the article? Thanks. Ron
