    3. Evidently, the steep hillsides were valued at $1 per acre. I remember visiting Lake Hope in Vinton Co,Oh about 1950 and being told that the locals recieved $5 per acre when it was built in the 1930's [?].Again, rugged land. Last week,I was in n e Adams Co, Ohio n e of Peebles,Ohio,or 30-40 miles north of Quincy. I was at a location that had once been smoothed by a glacier, but within sight ,in 3 directions,of knobs left because the glacier ended where I was. No glacier ever smoothed s Quincy, or,at least, south of St Paul,Ky,where I personally know. I hunted up Coon Hollow into Copeland Mt,in Adams Co 40 years ago. There were empty cabins way back that hollow, where there was no land level enough for a garden spot, except 500 steep feet up. Even a pasture on hills that steep would have been droughty. 2. Randal W Cooper
    3. Dear Members of the Lewis County, Kentucky Discussion Group, There were 23 people (22 men and one woman) who owned land on Briery Creek in the 1862 Tax List of Lewis County, Kentucky. They are listed here "almost" alphabetically, with the number of acres in the tract of land, followed by its value in 1862. These families would likely have had Quincy Post Office mailing addresses. John HACKWORTH was the largest landowner on Briery Creek in 1862, with 1600 acres valued at $4000. 1. George AUMILLER, 62/$500 2. Alexander BELL, 31/$300 3. David CORNES(CARNES?), 27/$100 4. 3. Randal, Thank you so much for all this info on Albert Cox, he did have a brother refered to as W.J.Cox, so I will be looking for a William J. or Willis J. As their father`s name was William Cox married Nancy Ann [Owens]/Cox/Bennington They are on the 1850 Census for Adams Co.,OH listed as Bennington`s (not sure if Samuel Bennington adopted Albert and W.J. or not) Oddly, W.J.Cox is said to look like M.J.Cox on the 1850 Census, and listed as FEMALE. At the Family Search-LDS site he is listed as W.J.Cox-MALE Get`s real confusing, not sure which direction to go in looking for him! Other siblings of Albert Cox are Freelove, Matilda, and Catherine (which is said to be Catherine [Roderick]Creamer). Nancy Ann Owens is from Kentucky and I`ve had no luck finding her parents or siblings. The Widow`s Pension and Invalid App. are at Ancestry.com, would appreciate if anyone could please send me copies of them. I sure would like to hear from anyone that connects to these Cox in any sort of way!!! Thanks again Randal you`ve been Super!!! 1. [ KYLEWIS] COX Correction; and a Steamboat Question, 1880, Lewis County, Kentucky
    2. Randal W Cooper
    3. Dear Lewis County, Kentucky Researchers, I have a correction to my last post. Willis COX enlisted in Company "K" of the Sixtieth Ohio, not "G". It was William COX who enlisted in Company "G", along with George COX and Harrison COX. These four men might have been related to Lewis County resident Albert J. COX. I would like to add a second, unrelated subject to this post. Does anyone know the name of the steamboat that was owned by Mr. AGNEW in 1880, as mentioned in the 1880 Census of Quincy, Lewis County, Kentucky? I would like to correspond with anyone who is interested in the steamboats that were associated with Lewis County, Kentucky, such as the steamboat that First Mate Benjamin WOODWORTH, Quincy resident, served on in 1860. Since Steamboat Captain John BOYLE and his business partner Henry MCKEE were enumerated as "Traders (in the Riverboat Trade?)" in the 1860 Census of Quincy, Lewis County, Kentucky, I suspect that Benjamin WOODWORTH may have been the Mate on the same craft that was commanded by John BOYLE, although I have no evidence for that, other than the fact that WOODWORTH and BOYLE were close neighbors and were working the river at the same time. I have found that Benjamin WOODWORTH continued to advance in his occupation as a steamboatman. He ultimately became a Steamboat Captain. My third-great grandfather William COOPER was a neighbor and friend (to what degree of friend, I do not know) of the WOODWORTHs. Thank you for any input you may have, during this quiet time on the Lewis County List. Sincerely, Randal W. Cooper

    1. [ KYLEWIS] Two or More Albert J. COXes in and near Lewis County, Kentucky
    2. Randal W Cooper
    3. Dear Lewis County, Kentucky Researchers, Upon further reflection, it seems likely that there were at least two Albert J. COXes in Eastern Kentucky, since the Albert J. COX who was listed in the 1860 Census of Mason County, Kentucky was probably not the same person as the Albert J. COX who married Virginia J. HARRISON in 1869 in Lewis County, Kentucky. Therefore, the Albert J. COX who served in the Third Regiment of Kentucky Volunteer Infantry, enlisting in 1861, was more likely the 1860 Maysville resident. This is because Virginia J. HARRISON's husband was born October 12, 1846, making him only thirteen years old at the time the 1860 Census was taken. Albert J. COX's service in the Sixtieth Ohio, as well as more information on said Regiment, can be found on the following website: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~volker/60thOhio.html Sincerely, Randal W. Cooper P.S. Three more COX enlistees might have been related to Albert COX. They were Harrison, George and Willis COX, who enlisted in Company "G" of the Sixtieth Ohio, at Gallipolis, in 1862. Please see the aforementioned website.

    3. Dear Subscribers to the Lewis County, Kentucky Mailing List, Including Sue Sisk, The widow of Albert J. COX, Virginia J., did receive a Widow's Pension, in 1915. The Application Number was 1,044,741 and the Certificate Number was 792,316. Albert J. COX applied for an Invalid Pension in Kentucky, in 1884. The Application Number was 513,992 and the Certificate Number was 530,536. The Pension was derived from his service in Company "F" of the Sixtieth Regiment of Ohio Volunteer Infantry. The soldier enlisted in said regiment on March 16 or March 22, 1864. There was also an Albert J. COX who served in Company "A" of the Third Regiment of Kentucky Volunteer Infantry, having enlisted in Kentucky on September 19, 1861. This soldier went on to serve in Company "E" of the Fifteenth Veteran Reserve Corps. It is possible that the two Albert J. COXes (Kentucky and Ohio Regiments) were the same person. Albert J. COX was enumerated in the 1860 Census of Maysville, Mason County, Kentucky, page 186. An Albert J. COX appeared in the 1870 Census of Vanceburg, Lewis County, Kentucky, page 532. He was listed in the 1890 Special Census of Union Veterans, page 082, still in Vanceburg. Albert J. COX was enumerated in the 1910 Census of Vanceburg, Lewis County, Kentucky, visitation 0122, E.D. 0111. In 1910, he was said to be 63 years old, born in Ohio. The remaining members of the household were born in Kentucky. His wife Virginia J. was 61. Their son John was 32 and daughter Catharine was 19. Randal W. Cooper

    1. [ KYLEWIS] John HACKWORTH, Hotel Keeper, Quincy, Lewis County, Kentucky, 1870
    2. Randal W Cooper
    3. Dear Members of the Lewis County, Kentucky Mailing List, John HACKWORTH (1806-1888) was enumerated in the 1870 Census of Quincy, Lewis County, Kentucky, dwellinghouse number 72, with the occupation of "Hotel Keeper". John HACKWORTH was listed as a farmer in 1850, 1860 and 1880. What was the name of the hotel that John HACKWORTH was managing in 1870 and where was it located? Was it the same hotel that Quincy resident Anderson GARLAND was managing ten years later, in 1880? I have found in my research notes that a hotel in Concord, Lewis County, Kentucky was run by Pleasant STRICKLETT in the 1860s, but he was killed. I did not record my source for the STRICKLETT information. It seems unlikely to me that the Concord hotel was the one managed by John HACKWORTH in 1870 and by Anderson GARLAND in 1880, due to the distance from Quincy to Concord. Quincy is in the eastern part of Lewis County, while Concord is in the western portion of Lewis County. Still, I suppose it is possible that Mr. HACKWORTH and Mr. GARLAND could have traveled by steamboat to and from the hotel, if indeed the Concord facility was the one managed by HACKWORTH and GARLAND. At this point, I can only speculate. I am also aware of the Kinniconick Hotel, although I have no information that would link HACKWORTH and GARLAND to that hotel. Thank you so much for any assistance you can render. Sincerely, Randal W. Cooper
