My grandfather, Charles Fagley, lost his 1st wife and remarried widow Harriet Miller McAfee. I've a picture someplace I think is their wedding picture. I'm guessing they married when Dad was at Occidental,or U Cincy,1923-26,in their 70's. Charles died at 88 in about 1944-45. She died about 1941. I was born Jan 1939. 1st time I ever heard of Eagle Rock. Dad's memory was mostly gone but 350 S Madison,Pasadena,he remembered near the end. 1898-2000. Very interesting..My family also migrated west (to Calif.) from Portsmouth,(Scioto Co.) OH and Lewis Co. Ky..In the 1920's... One minor correction tho, for the sake of historical accuracy Occidental college is actually in Eagle Rock, CA -a part of Los Angeles. Not Pasadena...I grew up in Eagle Rock and our High School graduation ceremony was held at Occidental College. PS: do you happen to know any McAfee's or Miller's?? Those were my grandparent's lines.. My Dad,who would later be Phi Beta Kappa at Occidental College,Pasadena failed his Clermont County exam to get out of the 8th grade the 1st time. But he had started 1st grade when he was 4,and skipped one grade. He passed it the 2nd time and entered Bethel-Tate High, where he graduated at 15. Even there,he was only 3rd in his class,as the Dunn brothers beat him. They got PhD's at U Chicago, and Cal Tech. On Sun, 29 Sep 2002 12:40:58 -0500 "Derre J. Dear Elizabeth Gerber and the Balance of the Lewis County, Kentucky Discussion Group, The "Old Soldiers' Home" in which Union Civil War Veteran William M. Wells resided the latter part of his life might have been the National Military Home for Disabled Union Veterans, which was located near Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio. The Home is now a Veterans Administration Hospital and it was indeed known as the "Old Soldiers' Home". My third-great grandfather William Cooper spent a few months recuperating in that institution, in 1883 and 1884. William Cooper was a member of Company "E" of the Union Army's Twenty-second Regiment of Kentucky Volunteer Infantry. Company "E" was composed almost entirely of men from Lewis County. The Company was led by Captain Alexander Bruce of Quincy/Foreman's Bottom. William Cooper was wounded in the Battle of Chickasaw Bayou, Mississippi, December 29, 1862. Private Cooper took a mini-ball in the forehead, an inch above his right eye. Sincerely, Randal W. Cooper

Hi! I've just found out that my gr-gr-gr grandfather, William M. Wells was a Union Civil War Veteran. He lived in Vanceburg during the 1880 & 1900 censuses, & is listed as enumerated on the 1890 Veteran;s schedule. An older family member just told me that he recollects that he lived out his final years in an Old Soldier's Home. I presume he died by 1910 because he doesn't show up in the census for that year. Does anyone know of a Veteran's home in Vanceburg sometime between 1880-1910? Thank you! Elizabeth Gerber San Francisco, CA

Trying to find information on my Grandmother Rhoda Thacker (ca 1877 - 1945) and her several husbands. Rhoda Thacker married Samuel Bloomfield in Lewis County in 1894 and they had several children. Samuel Bloomfield died ca 1905. Looking for information on his ancestry and his life. Anyone know who his parents were? When he died? Where he is buried? Rhoda Thacker Bloomfield married Francis Marion Polley ca 1907 (date and place unknown) and they had several children. F. M. Polley (generally called Marion) died November 4, 1926 in Lewis County, again leaving Rhoda a widow. Marion is buried in the Mount Tabor cemetery without a stone. Anybody know a way to determine where in the cemetery he is buried? . Sometime between November 1926 and May 1930, Rhoda married George Rayburn but I have found no marriage record. Rhoda Rayburn and her son Orbey Polley are found in the 1930 Campbell County census but no record has been found of George Rayburn. I believe he had died by May 1930 but don't know for sure. I have no information on George Rayburn but suspect he may have lived in the area of Lewis County. Anybody know anything about this George Rayburn? Any information on the above families greatly appreciated. Daryl Polley ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! I am looking for information on the above Lewis County families. I would especially like to prove the connection between Isaac S. Carey and my Diana Carey. Isaac S. Carey married Maranda Smith in Lewis County, Kentucky in 1828 and they owned land for several years next to my Great-Great Grandfather David Polley (aka Polly). Isaac and Maranda Carey acquired land and moved to Fulton County, Illinois in 1838 after which time I quickly lose track of them. David Polley's son James Polley married Diana Carey (date and place unknown) and raised several children in Lewis County, Kentucky including my Grandfather, Francis Marion Polley. I have never been able to establish a date of birth for Isaac S. Carey but apparently he acquired land in Fulton County, Illinois under warrants relating to service in the war of 1812. Since Diana Carey was born ca 1814, I am thinking she is probably a daughter but could be a sister or other relation. Any information on the above families greatly appreciated. Will be happy to share information I have with interested researchers. Daryl Polley ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! Hoping someone has this family in their files and can help me figure it all out. Frank H. Millar married Lula Bertram (atleast I think that's her last name) in the early 1900's either in Portsmouth Ohio or across the river in Kentucky (Greenup, Carter or Lewis County) They had a son in 1915, John W. Lula died Dec. 10, 1971 while living on Sunrise Avenue in Portsmouth. Frank preceeded her in death by a number of years. My mom referred to Lula as her 'cousin' and would always take me to visit her since it was only a few blocks from our house. My grandmother was a Bertram so I am assuming Lula was too. Trying to figure out how they were related since I have extensive research on the family and haven't found her in it yet... Any help would be appreciated . Thanks Pam Researching Bertram's, Waring's, Zornes', in Carter, Greenup and Lewis counties
Can anyone help me out on James Gray who married Agnes summer in Mason County, KY on 9-June-1802? Thanks for your time and trouble. Jim Gray
Dear Subscribers to the Lewis and Greenup Counties, Kentucky Mailing List, This is the sixth and final message (in this series) regarding the Union Army's Twenty-second Regiment of Kentucky Volunteer Infantry, which was composed of a good number of men of Greenup and Lewis Counties. In summary, the two campaigns that "our" Regiment paricipated in were the Cumberland Gap and the Vicksburg Campaigns. Both of those campaigns had victorious outcomes for the Cause of the Union. Three additional sources of information regarding the Regimental History of the Twenty-second are: 1. Adjutant General's Report for Kentucky 2. Thomas Speed's ~Union Regiments of Kentucky~ 3. The Online Roster of the Twenty-second With that, I will conclude with an invitation for anyone who is descended from soldiers of the Twenty-second Kentucky to email me (in addition to those who have already introduced themselves to me), so that we can continue to keep the memory of the deeds of the Twenty-second alive. I hope that this series of postings has been interesting and informative to the List Members and I wish success to each of you, as you conduct your family history research. Sincerely, Randal W.
