    2. Ronni, The L. M. Stricklett might be Lewis Marion Stricklett son of Pleasant M. Stricklett and Georgia Ann Parker. He was born 22 April 1862. I don't know when he died. He married Maggie K. Fryer in October 1885. Hope this helps. Phoebe

    3. Hi again... In a message dated way back in 1999, William Talley wrote: "Last year I wrote a lengthy article on the murder of Pleasant M. Stricklett and his hotel at Concord. It was published in the Lewis County Herald." I have searched the Lewis Co. Herald site and cannot find the article in question. It was a long shot, I know. Would someone happen to have a copy of this article? I suppose I could check with the Herald, but thought I would try here first. Thanks, Ronni

    3. Hi folks... At the Lewis County Herald website there's a photo of a "fish camp" dated "September 7, 1914" with several men pictured. One of the men is identified as L. M. Stricklett. "... G.P. Adams, L.M. Stricklett, Saml. F. Bruce, J. Martin Donehoo, and A. M. "Cell" Plummer, from the Lewis County Herald collection." Does anyone know who the Stricklett gentlemen might be? His parents? etc... Thanks! Ronni

    3. The LDS site (www.familysearch.com) lists a Martha Mers as the wife of Daniel Mers in the 1880 census. She is listed as born in Ohio and they are living in Colorado. You might want to check the site out and see what you can find. There was a listing for a James Harrison Gray but they had him married to someone else than you had him listed to. Hope it helps Pam > Can anyone tell me about John William Gray born 1845 in KY? > Was married to Martha J. Mers 20-May-1885. 3. Capt Wm Crawford and Col George Washington surveyed on the Sandy in very eastern Ky in 1770or 71. Then 1773,Capt Bullitt, acting as asst to Col Wm Crawford, led a surveying party down the Ohio past Lewis Co.. Bullitt 1st went up the Scioto to talk to the Indians, then began his float. Guessing from later inhabitants, he surveyed [?] around Concord,Lewis Co for Col Wm Crawford, and Wilson's Bottom,in very nw Lewis Co for [?] his father-in-law,Lt Col George Wilson. [At least some Bullitt was divorced from,or died as 1st husband,of Col Wilson's daughter. 3rd was John Minor, who built the boats James Willing and George Rogers Clark used vs the Mississippi river people in 1777-78. For whom did Capt Bullitt survey other bottoms in Lewis Co,and the salt lick near Vanceburg? He had his oown Bullitt's Lick near Louisville. John Connelly and John Crawford got Louisville's site. [Connelly lost his confiscated as a Loyalist]. ________________________________________________________________ The best thing to hit the internet in years - Juno SpeedBand! 1. [ KYLEWIS] BALLARD
    2. I'm looking for any information on an Isaac BALLARD and his 2nd wife Sarah (believed to be FRADD). They were married probably between 1905-1910, as they first show up together in Lewis County in 1910. Sarah had a son, Arville FRADD, from a previous marriage. Apparently, Sarah died before the next census in 1920. Isaac died in February 1926 and is buried in Woodland or Woodlawn Cemetery. I really need information on Sarah and her son, Arville. If anyone has any information, I'd really appreciate it. If anyone has the obituary book for 1926 Lewis County obituaries, I'd appreciate a lookup for Isaac. I'd like to know if he had an obituary and, if so, what it says. Thank you. Rebecca

    3. Hermon, Sorry, but that son Basil was not Brown--- Basil Burris Applegate (1810 Fleming - 1886 Lewis). Father Benjamin "of Mason" bought land in Fleming in 1797 and 1830's to Lewis Co, Ky. Grandfather Jacob Applegate(1746 NJ-1819 Mason Co, KY) was known to be in town of Washington in Mason Co. Immigrants Thomas Applegate (1604 Eng-1662 Long Island) & Elizabeth Wall had several children . Oldest son BARTHOLOMEW (1620 Eng-1690 NJ)is "supposed" to be my ancester-his descendants were in NJ for 4-5 generations. My Benjamin reportedly b. 1774 Frederick/Berkley VA/Wva Son THOMAS II (1698 will proven before Andrew Bowne, and others) is the ancester of the SW PA Applegates I have found no records in SW PA for MY branch of Applegates- except that story of men carrying a Jacob Applegate with a broken leg from somewhere SW PA to near Hagerstown MD. Benjamin Applegate was born 1774 -reportedly VA- Berkley WVA, so father Jacob would be not far from Hagerstown. I've often wondered what he was doing in PA? Perhaps visiting relatives? Or scouting out land? Who knows at this time. Yes, I agree with you that the name Walter may be from the Walls of NJ . There were numerous Applegate-Wall marriages for many generation but all that I have tracked have been Wall marriages into the line of Thomas Applegate II. Some of that line was in SW PA, then Mason, Brown Co OH etc. It bothers me that I find no other Walter/s in my line but several in the descendants of Thomas II. My current problems in proving the lineage are several. All too many people parrot what is on that "Applegates in America" website without any supporting documents. I have found most of the Kentucky records beginning 1797 and very early records (1600's-early 1700's). But I need many more for that late 1700's time period. The SW Pa Applegates in later 1700's are well documented in numerous historic writings and records. But the VA/Md records have been illusive. I have a few but sorting out the several Jacobs and numerous Benjamins is difficult without many more. And to complicate the search I find evidence that at least one of the SWPA Applegates was in Berkley -For instance, Benjamin Applegate (1725 - 1823 SW Pa), wife Rebecca Wall, oldest son Richard Derrick Applegate was reportedly born in 1764 Frederick/Berkley Co VA. Richard Derrick died Mason Co, Ky.. Some of his descendants in Brown Co, OH - one being his son Benjamin Applegate b. 1789 Allegheny Co,PA. d. 1845 Brown Co, married to a another Rebecca Wall Oh, what a tangled web. 3. Maria, I also descend from Benjamin Applegate (1774 VA- 1862 Lewis Co, KY) through his youngest son William Walter Applegate. Benjamin married a second time in 1829 to Mrs. Rebecca (Robb) Douglas. Their three children were James, John, and William Walter. Benjamin's first wife on numerous sites is listed as Hannah Peters - no doubt this information is taken from the Voress' "Applegates in America" site. Unfortunately, that site has multiple proven errors on it. And this is just another one. In Benjamin's will he lists his "three youngest sons": James, John, and William. He also lists his "children by Mary Rummins": Sally Wallingford, Thomas, Richard, Katherine Thomas, Jacob, Benjamin, Basil B., Margaret French, and Solomon. Of course, there is a possibility that he did indeed marry first to a Hannah Peters but his will clearly identifies the mother of his older children as Mary Rummins. 1. [ KYLEWIS] old genealogy scam is back
    2. Betty Lou Riley
    3. Forwarded FYI from the Archives-CC mail list... my apologies if you get this on more than one list. Sherri Hi Everyone: The old genealogy scam is back. www.genseekers.com Behind the password protection are links to the free genealogy on-line. There is no content of their own. In order to get the "5-day free trial" you have to surrender a credit card or bank account number. You have to cancel within 5 days or you get dinged. Guess what? The cancellation e-mail bounces. Does this surprise you? One person who recently fell for the come-on had his/her account dinged not once, but twice. It is time to remind folks on your state and county mailing lists about these scoundrels. It has been a couple of years since we have mentioned this. Permission is granted to pass this on.
