    1. [KYLEWIS-L] Lewis County Cemetery Records
    2. Linda, You may want to contact the Lewis County Historical Society for information on the Black Oak Cemetery. They have published several books of cemetery data and probably have the Black Oak cemetery as well. The books are $10.00. The Society's address is: Lewis County Historical Society P.O. Box 212 Vanceburg, KY 41179 I have one of the books, but it doesn't include Black Oak. Perhaps other readers can do a lookup if they have the right book. Laura Noland

I know nothing of Joseph's family. I am on the BOGGS mailing list but find most of those discussed are in other Kentucky counties. Joseph and Rachel BOGGS had a son George R. BOGGS, b. 29 Sept. 1849 who married (sometime prior to 1873) Susan POWER, daughter of Demsey POWER and Sarah RUGGLES. Do these people sound familiar to anyone? Any help would be so much appreciated! 1. [KYLEWIS-L] The Life of Captain John Boyle
    2. Randal W Cooper
    3. Dear Researchers of Lewis County, Kentucky, Captain John Boyle [Steamboat Captain in antebellum days] lived in Quincy, Lewis County, Kentucky from at least 1850 to about 1875. In and around 1860, he owned a store with Henry McKee. As such, they were called "Tradesmen" by occupation. The most glorified job on a steamboat was that of the Captain. On western rivers, the Captain usually owned his steamboat, and made it his business to keep in touch with nearly everything that kept his boat going. The Captain regularly checked on the machinery and paid the fuel and repair bills. He ordered food for the kitchen, including CIGARS for his passengers. The Captain made business deals that provided goods and freight [including TOBACCO] for his boat to carry. And, the Captain had to be friendly with the passengers in order to keep them happy. The source for this information on Steamboat Captains was "West by Steamboat" by Tim McNeese, 1993. Did Captain John Boyle and Henry McKee own a steamboat during the time they were Tradesmen in Quincy? Are there records of steam vessel operating permits in Lewis County, Kentucky? Randal W. Cooper, Researcher of Captain John Boyle [1825-1901] <[email protected]> Lorain, Ohio

    2. Helen Della-Volpe
    3. Hi, Juilie, Here is what I found on your MELVINA HUFFMAN. From the l850 census of Greenup Co. KY. SOLOMON HOUGHMAN, 50 VA (HUFFMAN) ELIZ.HOUGHMAN, (nee WARNOCK) m 1/20/1829) 43, b Ohio FRANCIS M. 29, KY (m 1/6/62 to NANCY STEWART) MARY HOUGHMAN, 17 KY. (m 10/20/55 to JOHN W.W. COOPER) ROBERT HOUGHMAN, 15, KY AMBROSE J., HOUGHMAN, 13 KY MELVINA HOUGHMAN 11 JACOB HOUGHMAN, 9, KY (m 8/28/66 to MARY E. POGUE) AARON HOUGHMAN, 7 KY BENJAMIN HOUGHMAN 5,KY (m 2/25/71 to LUCY ANN TRAYLOR) JAMES C. HOUGHMAN, 4 KY (m 9/23/77 to IDA ANTIS) Note: JACOB HUFFMAN B 11/30/39. D 7/17/1914. His wife d 12/21/1928. The l860 census Greenup shows: JOSEPH D. UNDERWOOD & MELVINA UNDERWOOD. JOSEPH was 20,, b KY and MELVINA was 22 b KY. I am sure this is MELVINA"s family in spite of the difference is spelling. I believe HOUGHMAN was pronounced HUFFMAN . My grandmothers sister married SAMUEL SHUFF....but early on I found that his family was listed as SHOUGH. Also found some descendants of this family (on another liine) spelled the name CHUCK. I think both spelliings anglicized the name to match the German pronunciatioin. I checked and just found a marriage record for SOLOMON HUFFMAN & BETSEY WARNOCK (d/o of SAMUEL. WARNOCK) 20 Jan l829, Greenup Co. KYl Another of my grandmother's sisters married a WARNOCK and I have gathered some info on this family. When I get time, I will try to find something on SAMUEL WARNOCK....if you want this. Helen.
