    1. [KYLEWIS-L] Cyrena CRAWFORD
    2. Sandra L. Lewis
    3. Hi, You will see that I have a problem with Cyrena Crawford. Perhaps someone out there can help me. I have a Surreana (Zerena) AILLES b.Oct 4 1837 married to Henry Harrison Pell on July 14 1849. This would make her 12 yrs old. Her uncle Elias Ailes gave his permission for her to marry since her father was dead? I've been told her mother is Cyrena Crawford. Now here is the problem. Cyrena Crawford married Lewis Ailes November 23, 1836 Lewis County KY. They had David AILLES November 25, 1837. This would make Surrena and David born 1 month apart. Not impossible but highly unlikely. After the death of Lewis Ailes Cyrena married Samuel Moore and lived in Green Twp. and in Manchester Twp in Adams County OH. They had the following children Lucinda Angeline b.July 28, 1850, Mary Jane b. 1853, Charles Paris b. 1858. Is this the same Cyrena Crawford? Who are the parents of Surrena Ailes if not Cyrena Crawford and Lewis Ailes? Help is needed. Sandy Lewis

    1. [KYLEWIS-L] ? about burial places.
    2. Linda Cassidy Lewis
    3. Does anyone know if there were laws in existence about where you could be buried at the end of the last century? I am having a hard time finding where my great-great grandfather was buried in Lewis Co. KY and just wondered if someone who died in 1896 could have been buried on their own land or would they have had to have been buried in a proper cemetery by then. Linda

    3. Spirit, I know you were volunteering to do a lookup for Sandy, but I was just sitting here trying to figure out when a couple in my database might have married. If you're not too busy, could you tell me if you find a marriage for Patsy Duvall and Thomas Harrison in Mason County? This would have been, my guess, 1830-1840. 2. Hi Sandy, Try the library in Independence, it has a genealogical building right next to it. Has extensive reference material. Don't know if what you need is there, but its a pretty good bet you will find something you are looking for. Also Lewis Co. didn't come into existence until 1907, (had to look that one up). Mason Co was the parent Co., so any records before that might be found there. I have the Mason Co., marraige book, so could look there for you, if you give me names. Spirit

I don't have it here, but will take a look when I go to where it is. Maybe someone on line other than me has it. I loaned it to my sister. Spirit

John Springer married Mary E. Parker after the 1850 census. I know nothing of her, but it seems she died before the 1870 Lewis co. census. For listed there is a John Springer of the right age, with sons Benjamin age 13, so b. 1857 and Jacob age 11, so b. 1859. Thank you, Kathleen Rizer

    1. [KYLEWIS-L] Reminder: Good Entry Tips!
    2. Betty Lou Riley
    3. Hi Everyone, I just wanted to take a moment, to remind everyone of the tips for good, queary posting entries. Please remember to use a well defined, meaningful, subject line, *name, state and date*, helps greatly! If you have a subject, that is a little off subject, please make a note, in the subject line. Just remember that some of our members get hundreds of messages a day, the ones with vague subject lines, are prime candidates for deletion without reading. If you're replying to a message, but changing the subject of conversation, change the subject line to match. If you subscribe in Digest mode, don't just leave "Digest" as the subject but make sure that your subject line matches the content of your message. Taking a few extra seconds to make sure your subject line is an effective one, makes it more likely you'll find the connection you're after. Pioneer stories and family stories, are fine, they go hand in hand with the facts of genealogy. You never know when they might connect to someone family!! Don't forget to watch the *TO* line, so you know where your reply is going, If it says *KYLewis-L*, its going to be public to the list. If it says someones *name*, its going private to them. If you want it *private* click thier e-mail address. Use *reply to all*, to get it to both places. Please remember, to just leave enough of the previous message to identify it, not the entire message. The full message just adds to the overload at roots and also to everyones mailboxes. Digest replies can be a real overload. Hope this will help all of us, in our busy days!! 1. [KYLEWIS-L] Hi to the Newbies!
    2. Betty Lou Riley
    3. Hi Everyone, I found this on the listowners list and Cyndi gave me permission to pass this on to the lists! "Each January we see a huge influx of newbies joining us online because Santa was generous and left a sparkling new computer under the tree. There are also many after-holidays sales which offer people the opportunity to purchase a snazzy new computer or modem. Many people get online for the first time and enthusiastically don their cyber-bikinis, hitting the surf with gusto. They are excited to be here and they are (much as we "oldbies" were) rightfully overwhelmed by all that there is to see and do. The language here is foreign to them. The technology is newer, fancier and zippier than they may have used in the past. And the way that we all participate in our giant, online genealogical society, while being very similar to offline groups, is still a bit different than they may be prepared for. In other words, it is a brave new world to them. I would like to put out a call to each of you to show these newbies that we are a friendly, welcoming and helpful group of online genealogists. To do so we all need to pitch in and show patience, understanding and kindness. We also need to put on our teaching caps and be prepared to show them the ropes. 1. Don't make assumptions. 2. Explain things in detail, include URLs and complete instructions. 3. Verify details and addresses before you send them to people. 4. Offer to help people privately via e-mail, off of the mailing lists. 5. Be prepared to explain things more than once, in more than one way. 6. Keep in mind that we were all new at one time. 7. Keep in mind that we all learn something new every day. There are several places online to which you can point newbies in order to help them learn about this new research venue. I have tried to make these easy to locate by setting up links on my site: Internet Stuff You Need To Know http://www.CyndisList.com/internet.htm Also be sure to point them to these basic starting places online: Cyndi's List of Genealogy Sites on the Internet http://www.CyndisList.com Your genealogical research portal onto the Internet RootsWeb http://www.RootsWeb.com See the RootsWeb Help Desk: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~help/index.htm Genealogy Resources on the Internet - Mailing Lists http://users.aol.com/johnf14246/gen_mail.html USGenWeb http://www.USGenWeb.org Good luck and successful surfing to everyone online - both newbies and oldbies, Cyndi" Hope we all are, nice to the newbies! Newbies please feel free to ask me or the lists, any questions that you have about posting quearies! I will also be reposting a list of, queary posting suggestions! I am going to try to post them every month! "How to Contribute by Mail One way to help RootsWeb is by sending a check in U.S. dollars to: RootsWeb Genealogical Data Cooperative P.O. Box 6798 Frazier Park, CA 93222-6798 Please make sure your name and e-mail address are on the check! Thanks! Please don't send cash, and please don't send drafts denominated in foreign currency. 1. [KYLEWIS-L] {not a subscriber} Col WmCrawford,Grimes,Effie VAN Gelder;Quick,Graham etc.
    2. I "may" be devoloping a longer chain of clues on Col Wm Crawford, tortured 1782, of CONNELLSVILLE,PA,and before, near Charlestown, now JEFFERSON CO,WV. His mother said to be HONORA GRIMES m 2nd RICHARD STEPHENSON. Col WM Crawford named a dau ,EFFIE [m WM McCormick. His son,Lt John CRAWFORD,m 2nd in the OHIO RIVER bottoms of s ADAMS CO.OH EFFIE -? GRIMES,dau of ELIZABETH,widow of RICHARD GRAHAM. [will MASON CO,KY]. 1740'S IN NEW YORK CITY's wills are EFFIE [CELEPHA] VAN GELDER CRAWFORD'S will. And her husband ,WM CRAWFORD'S. 1790 era, on the ,now,LEWIS CO KY bottoms at CONCORD KY,was RICHARD GRAHAM's Station. Just up-river,at Quick's RUN,was BLOCK HOUSE Station. Mr- Quick was captured at the latter, and held years in DETROIT. At those stations were the kinsmen of Col WM CRAWFORD. Lt JOHN CRAWFORD, AND WM'S 1\2 BRO STEPHENSON'S,plus others from CONNELLSVILLE,PA- over the year, many CONNELL,PAGE,ASHTON,GREENBERRY JONES,MAHAFFEY from Connellsville would settle in se BROWN,SW ADAMS CO OH,and LEWIS CO KY. I have the QUICK's connected with the VAN GELDER'S,AND ALEXANDER GRAHAM'S in NY,and intermarrying girls named EFFIE. In the early day,NEW YORK'S Dutch seemed the ones to name girl's,EFFIE. I missed EFFIE being an uncommon name early, becaue my dad had a cousin,EFFIE MILNER SWING. Celpha seems rarer. WM CRAWFORD,Mariner, with ties to PORT ROYALL,JAMACIA, called her AFFIE. Enoch STEVENSON ,EX PORT ROYALL,JAMACIA'S NY CITY WILL MENTIONED A son,RICHARD. I can name several families who migrated to the POTOMAC RIVER near COL WM CRAWFORD'S childhood home from STATEN ISLAND,NY,where some of the VAN GELDER'S LIVED. EFFIE VAN GELDER CRAWFORD'S NY CITY WILL 1740'S dis not name WM and Valentine CRAWFORD,but she must be akin. Isaac Quick lived within 5 miles of CONNELLSVILLE,PA. I've been thinking the QUICK'S AND STOUT'S spent some time in HUNTERDON CO NJ. No "proof" links the above EFFIE'S. Indeed,I read that LT JOHN CRAWFORD M 2ND EFFIE MCCORMICK GRIMES,who was his sister EFFIE cRAWFORD,WHO M WM MCCORMICK. The GRIMES,VRAWFORD'S,GRAHAM'S settled across the Ohio in the very s ADAMS CO,OH river bottoms.Had the early courthouse. Must have preceded NAT MASSIE'S FORT AT MANCHESTER,OH,for they got 1st pick of lands, which exceded his BUCKEYE STATION,AND GIFT RIDGE LANDS nearby. But some of the STEPHENSON'S,AND VALENTINE CRAWFORD'S BOYS STAYED ON THE LEWIS CO KY side[formed from MASON co 15+ years after settlement. ___________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. 1. [KYLEWIS-L] Give A Holiday Present for All
    2. Betty Lou Riley
    3. Dear listmembers: Have you ever stopped to think who brings the services of Rootsweb to us. Well it's Brian Leverich and his wife Karen Isaacson. They started Rootsweb some years ago out of their home in Frazier Park CA, a mountain community nestled between Los Angeles and Bakersfield. Under CA's business laws, Rootsweb is what they call a simple "Mom and Pop" organization.....nothing really fancy about it. They solely rely on contributions from people like you to help pay for the day-to-day expenses, as well as supplementing funding out of their own pockets. The expenses are mounting daily, much more then they can afford themselves. Rootsweb is in the process of gaining non-profit status, but the legalities involved is mind boggling as well as expensive. Hopefully in the future Rootsweb will be able to obtain contributions through foundations and grant money to keep this operation going. This last year Rootsweb was lucky enough to gain a corporate sponsor to help defray some of the mounting costs. But in this world of takeovers and buy outs, Palladium Software was bought out by the Broderbund/Learning Co. conglomerate. Rootsweb is about to lose this valuable sponsor soon, and they have resorted to taking a $25,000 loan to help offset the expenses. Remember loans have to be repaid! Rootsweb needs our help badly! Please remember next time you send an email to a list like this, or place a query on one of the many Rootsweb supported USGenWeb sites (by the way, Rootsweb provides server space freely to the USGenWeb), or when you visit the USGenWeb Archives, that someone is paying for all of this so that genealogy on the internet may remain free and accessible to all researchers. Without Rootsweb, our days of visiting signup pages with our credit cards will be the common place practice. You can help support Rootsweb for as little as $12......that's only a $1 a month.....what a deal! For information on how to help fund Rootsweb's future, please visit: http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/how-to-subscribe.html Please let's make this a happy holiday for Brian and Karen, and especially for everyone who uses Rootsweb's services. For those of you who are already financial supporters of Rootsweb, I thank you from the bottom on my heart. I wish everyone a Happy Holiday and a prosperous New Year!!! *News letter just received from Brian Leverich and his wife Karen Isaacson!* ===================================================== Karen and I are in the hole on RootsWeb; not only have we not been paid anything, we've been paying out of our pockets for the privilege of working here night and day without weekends or holidays. (Just *today* Karen and I took out a $25,000 loan to cover the fact that the Palladium sponsorship has apparently died with their acquisition by TLC, and to pay for the hardware we're going to need to handle the new users we expect to have after Christmas.) Just so you fully understand what I've told you above, you should be aware that in terms of traffic RootsWeb is one of the *top 25* or so sites on the whole Internet. Folks who can run these sorts of facilities are absurdly rare (there are a few hundred of them in the whole world), and senior system administrators at the other "Top 25" sites generally have salary+benefits+option packages that run in the $200,000-500,000 per year and up range. ### Folks should be clear on the concept that the administration staff at RootsWeb is making a huge contribution to the genealogical community by essentially donating our time. The fact that each of us is personally donating services worth tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars a year is part of the reason we find it so depressing that only about 2-6% of our users are choosing to support RootsWeb at all, and that even among our supporters the average contribution is only one-third of what "tens of thousands of genealogists" (the Wall Street Journal) are spending at Ancestry.com. I don't think RootsWeb is going to fold anytime soon. But I'd be lying to you if I didn't tell you that the staff is seriously wondering whether the community values our efforts enough that continuing on with RootsWeb makes sense. The admin staff wants to give the genealogical community a great online genealogical library, but we can't do it if only 2-6% of our users will voluntarily choose to support us. Without more support, RootsWeb can't afford to buy the servers and bandwidth and scanners and such that we need to bring online the whole US Census and the British Birth/Marriage/Death records and all the other resources we'd like to make freely available to the entire community. Maybe Ancestry has it right. Lock up the resources and charge the users through the nose. Oh well. -B Betty Lou Riley List Owner for: OHAdams-L, KYGreenu-L, KYLewis-L, and McGovney-L Instructions at: <http://www.zoomnet.net/~chipmunk/SurnamesMail.html> CC:/CCA:KY Greenup Co.
