The following obituary was in the December 29, 2004, issue of the Mountain Eagle newspaper: ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Alex Combs dies Funeral services for Alex Combs, 72, were held December 26 at Letcher Funeral Home in Whitesburg. A son of the late Carl and Corsie Sexton Combs, he was a member of the Haymond Freewill Baptist Church. He died December 22 at his home at Thornton. Surviving are his wife, Edna Sexton Combs; nine sons, Jimmy Combs, Wayne Combs, Carl Dean Combs, Mark Combs, Bobby Combs, Ishmeal Combs, Elmer Bates Jr., Shannon Combs, and Gilbert Bates; four daughters, Ann Strickland, Renee Combs, Phyllis Bates and Frances Cook; five brothers, R.B. Combs, Hillard Bates, Millard Bates Jr., Worley Bates, and Morgan Bates; a sister, Emmazetta Bates; 30 grandchildren, and number of great-grandchildren.
