    1. Largest Walnut Tree from Letcher County - Joe Hale

    3. April 24, 1903. The largest walnut log ever taken out of the Eastern Kentucky mountain forests has just been taken from Cross Fork of Kentucky river, west of Mayking, overland across the mountains to Jackson, Breathitt county, to the Cincinnati markets. The log was nearly six feet in diameter and sixteen feet long, and it required eight large yoke of oxen to "snake" it over the mountains. It was bought for $1,600 from Joe Hale. Members of the Kentucky World's Fair Association gave Mr. Hale's bid on the tree with the intention of placing it on exhibition at St. Louis in 1904, but their bid of $2,000 was a day too late. ___________________ From Knott County Historical Society's - A Century Ago This Week (1903 Edition) Can anyone help us locate a photo of this log? Anyone related to Joe Hale? Thanks. Sincerely yours, David R. Smith, Pres. Knott County Historical Society, Inc.
