He was a greeter at the Oxford Wal-Mart for the past nine years and was known as the “pedaling poet” by neighbors. “He was very outgoing and he never met a stranger,” said his wife, Iona. “He was a pedaling poet; he would write poems for anybody that would ask him to. He was a great bicycle rider.” According to his wife, Caudill rode a bike long-distance to both Florida and Colorado. Caudill died Thursday at age 81. He was born in Letcher County, Ky., on Nov. 11, 1922, the son of Ezekiel and Martha Caudill. He was raised and attended school in Fletcher County, and later wrote a book entitled “Henderson” about growing up in rural Kentucky. Caudill also served with the U.S. Navy from 1942 until 1945 during World War II in the Pacific Theater. In 1950 he moved to Oxford. He married Iona Ford in College Corner on July 7, 1956, and worked at the National Lead Co. at Fernald before retiring in 1984. He is survived by his wife, Iona; five daughters, Sandra Smith, Karen Rigling, Brenda Graw, Nancy Abram and Patricia Oliver; three sons, Timothy, Michael and Josh; 20 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and four sisters, Lilly Back, Pruda Stanley, Dee Caudill and Alma Statum. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 29, at the Oxford Baptist Church, 5299 College Corner Pike, in Oxford. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the church. Burial will be at Oxford Cemetery. ****************************** May 28, 2004 Journal News, Hamilton, Ohio Henderson Caudill Henderson Caudill, 81, of Oxford, passed away early Thursday in Oxford. He was born in Letcher County, Kentucky on November 11, 1922 the son of Ezekiel and Martha Melton Caudill. He was raised and attended school in Fletcher County, then served with the US Navy from 1942 until 1945 during WWII in the Pacific Theater. He moved to Oxford in 1950 and has lived here since. On July 7, 1956 he married Iona Ford in College Corner. He worked 33 years at the National Lead Co. at Fernald, retiring in 1984 and for the past nine years has worked as a greeter at the Oxford WalMart. He was an avid long distance bicyclist riding to Florida and to Colorado. He wrote poetry and a book about growing up in rural Kentucky. Locally he was known as the “Pedaling Poet”. He also participated in weekly religious services at the Oxford View Nursing Home always having a new poem for the residents. He was a member of The Oxford Baptist Church, the VFW and the Odd Fellows Lodge. He was r! ecently awarded his High School Diploma in an appreciation program at Lakota High School. He leaves his wife, Iona, five daughters, Sandra (Gary) Smith, Irons, MI, Karen (John) Rigling, Coldwater, OH, Brenda Graw, Richmond, IN, Nancy Abram, Hamilton, and Patricia Oliver, St. Cloud, FL, and three sons Timothy (Becky) Florence, TX, Michael (Kendra) Houston, TX and Josh, McKinney, TX, 20 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, 4 sisters, Lilly Back, Mason, OH, Pruda Stanley, Oxford, Dee Caudill, Hamilton, and Alma Statum, Oxford. He was preceded by his daughter Leslie Renee on January 1, 1982, and 2 sisters Delpha Bailey and Ada Caudill and 4 brothers, Riley, Rex and Ellis Caudill and Percil Back. Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 29, 2004 at 10:30 a.m. at the Oxford Baptist Church, 5299 College Corner Pike, Oxford with Visitation Friday from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 also at the church. Burial will be in the Oxford Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Oxford Baptist Church Building Fund. The Smith & Ogle Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
