I too tried that Harlan Co birth database and couldn't get beyond the letter E. Vicky was said to have had a daughter too, someone maybe Estil Gallaway called her Ellabelle. Nothing found to confirm it. No I haven't looked for the WWI registration. I really had let this search drop in 2001, since I had no leds. I have an internet listing of the Maggard Cemetery, it does not list Lee or Martha.There are 6 others there if you need the dates of: Betty Jane,Joseph,David,Lonnie R, Mazie, Theresa. The cemetery where Vickey is, is called the McKnight Cemetery. The Galloways with markers in this cemetery are Andrew (Judge's bro), Nervesta , and Andrew's son Herscel. Do you need this info? Before I go on and on, do you live in Letcher or Harlan County that you might have seen these cemeteries yourself? Of course, there are always unmarked graves.

I have been receiving at least two of these a day and each time I try to bounce them I get a message saying that the address does not exist. Good find. I tried looking at the birth listings for Harlan KY on the Harlan KY genealogy website to see if any of the children were born there. My computer locked up on that huge listing. I have the KY birth index on CDROM at home so will look to see if there is anything to be learned about Vicki from that when I get home this evening as I can look at all counties on my CDROM. Martha Craiger Galloway was still alive in 1930 as she is with her husband in the census in Letcher KY. Leroy (Lee) Galloway did die in 1935. I do not know who that Martha Galloway is that died in Davies County. I may request that death certificate just to check it out. I tried to see if I could find a WWI draft registration card for Judge Morgan Galloway, but I did not find one in Letcher KY nor Harlan KY. Have you found one on him yet? He should have registered since he was born prior to 1900. The KY birth index is missing from Ancestry.com this week. Not sure why they took that database off. Maybe they decided it violated privacy or something. I have it all on CDROM anyway, it was just that I liked the search capabilities on Ancestry.com better than what is on my CDROM.

Still could not find her listed even though now I have her death between Apr 1930 and May 1931. Seems like I saw a Martha Gallaway who died in 1929 in Davies county, where is that? Yes, Lee and Leroy Galloway are the same person. What might add to the confusion is that Martha J. Craiger married a Galloway and her mother was also a Galloway. I am sure they are connected Galloway families, but I have not researched them to see if and where they connect. The death certificate of Leroy Galloway does not give his burial location. I was hoping it would as that would be a good place to look for Martha J. Craiger Galloway's grave. I have gone through the Kentucky Death index in every possible way to find Martha J Craiger Galloway and have had no success.

I gather you are mostly researching the Craigers. So, Leroy and Lee are the same person. I have the 1910 census that shows L.G., Martha and Judge 14 yrs old. In 1920, Judge is with 1st wife Darthula Scott and son Lee 1yrs old. Sometime between 1924 - 1931, my gr-aunt Vickey either died or divorced as he remarried in 1931 to Eva Hill. I have not found Vickeys death record yet. On a KY database of deaths, I do not see Vickey or Martha's date of death. Maybe you can follow up with this -- In 2001, I made a trip to Letcher Co and found the Maggard Cemetery in OvenFork where Judge is buried. I also found a nephew of Judges, Estel Galloway who at the time was about 80yrs old and living at 102 Chicken Lane in OvenFork. He was clear-minded but not forthcoming in answering my questions, but he did tell me where Vickey was buried in another cemetery. He also said that ! Lee and Martha was buried in same cemetery as Judge, but I could not find any markers for them. Maybe if he is still living, he might open up to you. If you hear or find out anything else that would be useful to me, please let me know. Kathy

I best explain my connection and then you can see where my interest is. Some of this you may already know, but I will just give an over view in case you don't. Judge's mother was Martha J. Craiger. She was the daughter of Samuel Eli Craiger and Mary Jane Galloway. Samuel Eli Craiger's sister was my great great grandmother. My genealogy goal has been to research my direct line plus the siblings and children of the siblings (including spouses) of my direct line. Thus, I have tried to document Samuel Eli Craiger and his children and the spouses of his children. Martha J. Craiger and her husband Leroy Galloway kind of brought me to the edge of my research on that family. That said, I have tried to fully document each person in my database with as many sources as possible and I am still missing a few details on Martha J. Craiger. Let me give you her genealogy in a nutshell: Michael Craiger, born about 1802 in VA, most likely Wythe County, married Elizabeth Jane Goins (the Goins name is not proven but that is handed down in family lore). Elizabeth was born about 1811 in VA. They married about 1830. The family is first found in the census records in 1840 and 1850 in Scott VA, then following that are in Wise County VA until some of the children like Martha J and her brother moved to Kentucky which is where they are found after 1900. Michael Craiger died between the 1850 and 1860 census. Samuel Eli Craiger was born about 1837 in Scott VA. He married Mary Jane Galloway in 1879 in Wise County. It appears that he and Mary Jane had their two children, Andrew Jackson and Martha J prior to their marriage. Mary Jane Galloway was first married to a Thomas Elkins and their relationship was very strange to say the least. It appears that Mary Jane and Samuel Eli lived to gether until the death of Thomas Elkins, then they officially married. Thus, you will note that both Martha J and Andrew Jackson were born prior to the marriage of Samuel Eli and Mary Jane. The family is found in the 1880 Wise VA census. Martha J Craiger married Leroy Galloway in 16 Jan 1888 in Wise County VA. Leroy was the son of Joseph E. Galloway and Sarah Johnson. In 1900, the family of Martha J. Craiger and Leroy Galloway is found in Harlan KY. They are living right next to her parents. At the same time, Martha's brother Andrew Jackson Craiger is living in Letcher KY. By the 1910 census, Martha J & Lee Galloway are living in Letcher County KY and it appears that they remained there until their death. Leroy Galloway died 15 Sep 1935 in Letcher KY. I do have a copy of his death certificate. It appears that Martha was still alive at the time of his death, but I have nothing on her after that. I have everything that I have explained here fully documented with all of my sources and would be happy to share that with you if you are interested. I do see the son Morgan in the home of Martha J and Lee Galloway in the 1900 census. I was hoping that you could shed some light on what happened to Martha J Craiger Galloway after the death of her husband. I do not have any other contacts on the family of Martha J Craiger and Leroy Galloway. All of my Craiger contacts come from other children of Michael & Elizabeth Jane Craiger.

Since posting back in 2001, I have found out alittle more about Judge Morgan Galloway. Although, I do not know of his parents deaths, Judge lived between 1897-1974. He had 3 wives in total, with my great-aunt Vickey as the 2nd. He had 2 children with the lst, 3 with my gr-aunt, and then 6 more with 3rd wife. Judge is buried with his 3rd wife, my gr-aunt is in another cemetery, grave unmarked supposely with 2 of her children with her. I would like to find out more about Judge and Vickey's life and children. I believe Vickey only had 1 child to grow into maturity, Frank who has since died himself in the last decade. Can you put me in touch with someone of this family, or are yourself related in some way to Judge? I welcome any info. Thanks, Kathy
