Description: Hewn log house; story-and-a-half. With pole kitchen on north side. Chimney at east end. Window in west end of first story; both ends of second. Porch in front. History: James Chisenhall was a son of Laborn Chisenhall and was born in Lee Co., VA. He came to the Guests River about 1850 and married Jane, daughter of Lewis and Penelope Day Roberts. Chisenhall was a very tall man and was noted for his whittling. Anytime and anyplace, when he was engaged in conversation, he would bring out his knife and start whittling on whatever was nearest at hand. The habit resulted in all his chairs being cut and carved in all manner of shapes. Once, James M. Day, had bought a new wagon. An acquaintance engaged Chisenhall in talk and he backed up against the wagon and whittled away on the new wagon bed, doing several dollars damage before he could be stopped. At his death, his daughter, Annie, wife of John Adams, inherited the homeplace. She sold it to the Virginia Coal & Iron Company in 1915. A granddaughter, Mrs. Irvine Mullins, now resides as a tenant on part of the farm. Source of Information: Letty Chisenhall. Notes for Galen Marion Roberts: The following version of the shot out at Critical Fork was told by Marion Roberts, A.N. Kilgore and E.J. Bond. Location: On Critical Fork of Guest River about one mile east of state highway #620, ten miles northwest of Wise Va. Date: Jan 1 1890. History: Sometime in the summer of 1889 there was a dance on Hash Hollow of Indian Creek at which place Robert Day and one of the Gardners had a falling out over a girl. On New Years Day, 1890, the Days and Roberts met at the home of Ira Roberts on Critical Fork for a shooting match, the prizes being chickens and turkeys. Before the match started, but after most of the Day-Roberts clan had assembled under a large apple tree a few yards west of the Ira Roberts home, two of the Gardners rode up on a gray horse. John F. Gardner, about 30, was in the saddle and his brother, Daniel, about 16, was riding behind him. It is said that John Gardner sprang from his mount, shooting. And in less than a minute, he had been shot and his back broken with a rifle. In the meantime, Robert Day, at whom John Gardner had fired, had run away in the woods, leaving his kinsmen, the Roberts to do the fighting. It seems that all the Roberts and Day guns were turned on young Daniel Gardner. When the smoke of battle was lifted, it was found that John Gardner, (James) Clayton Hunsucker, and Galon Roberts were mortally wounded while Robert Day, Marion Roberts, Daniel Gardner, and Shadrick Roberts had been shot. John Gardner and Clayton Hunsucker died the following night. Galon Roberts lived three days with a bullet hole through his neck. Daniel Gardner was shot twenty-seven times and after the fight was over, Miss Peggy Roberts found him clinging to a limb with one hand and holding his pistol in the other. His clothes were on fire. Daniel lived until a few months ago (1936), but finally died of his wounds. Robert Day, Marion Roberts, and Shadrick Roberts were but slightly injured. They all recovered and Marion Roberts is still living in (1936), the only survivor of that fight. Ira Roberts, one of the principals in the fight, though not wounded, was indicted and spent a fortune in court cost and attorney fees. He was finally acquitted and later moved to Taney County, Missouri, where he died in 1935, age 90. According to the above article, the year of the feud was 1890, but Wise County Death records of John F. Gardner, Galen M. Roberts and James C. Hunsucker prove it occurred in 1891. He was born May 07, 1759 in Henrico Co. Virginia, and died March 12, 1849 in Perry Co. Kentucky. Notes for MARY DAVIDSON: Mary Davidson was the oldest child of Daniel Davidson and was born in 1774 in Washington Co. Va. She married after her family left Virginia, migrating into Kentucky in 1800-01 and settled in what is not Clay, Perry and Breathitt counties. They chose the three forks of the Kentucky River as their home-sites. The North Fork, Middle Fork and the South Fork comprise the head waters of the Kentucky River. Mary married about 1802 Samuel Cornett born May 7, 1759 probably in Virginia. It is said that the Cornetts came to Ky before 1800. Samuel's brother William was a Revolutionary War veteran and they came together into Ky. to find a home-site. It is said that the glowing description of the Kentucky Lands with its abundance of game and land caused the urge to migrate among the Holsten River settlers of Virginia. Notes for JOHN SAMUEL CORNETT: Samuel Cornett died March 12, 1849 in Perry Co. Ky and is buried at Dione about 10 miles west of Cumberland, Perry County Ky. After their marriage, Samuel and Mary made their home in Line Fork, in Letcher Co. Ky. It is thought they raised their family there. This information is taken from a small book titled the "Cornetts" now owned by Olen Cornett of Worthington, Ky. I (the author) was able to add a item from the 1850, 60 and 70 census of Perry and Letcher counties Kentucky. Notes for John Mullins: I found this article at my local LDS Center in the Sutherland Collections PART # 1 John Mullens, old Revolutionary War soldier, 60 years of age, states that he enlisted in the service of the United States in 1779 for three years. That he enlisted under the command of Captain Henry Conway who was a Captain under the command of Col. Ball, who commanded the First Virginia Regiment. That he was at the taking of Stony Point and continued in the service of the United States and was in the battle of the Siege of Charleston, where he was taken prisoner by the British Officer Mounteen, was taken to England as a prisoner and kept there till peace was made. That he never had it in his power to return to America for 10 or 11 years, but after he returned, he received an honorable discharge. He put his discharge, his certificate for bounty but he, in a short while, became insolvent and apparently deranged so that I have never received one dollar for all my services. Said Mullins further states that he is poor and in indigent circumstances and needs the assistance of his county for his support, and therefore he prays to be placed on the pension list. Sworn to in open Court of the said County on May 18th, 1818. His John X. Mullins mark John Kelly made oath: That he lives neighbor to John Mullins, the person who made the above application. That he is a poor man and needs the assistance of his county. His John X. Kelly mark Floyd County, Kentucky. On Monday 26th of May 1825, John Mullins appeared in Court and made declaration on oath: That he is 65 years of age and a resident of said county. He made affidavit to his services, similar as above and stated that after he returned from his imprisonment, he received and honorable discharge from Captain Conway, the Captain under whom he served. He also received a certificate for Bounty Land and his wages. That he placed them into the hands of Richard Wm. (?) as above stated and that after he, William Wan (?), became deranged and insolvent, he has never gotten his discharge and has not since seen it. He made a list of his property and stated that he had not, by sale, gift or otherwise, disposed of his property so that it would bring him within provision of receiving a pension. He further states that his family consists of his wife, aged about 50 years, named Nancy, and three children, named John aged 15 years, Betsy aged 11 years, and Joshua aged 8 years. His wife is very sickly and infirm and his family is not able to contribute any to his support, worth naming. His occupation is that of a farmer, buy he is too old to pursue it. He lives upon a small piece of rented ground and it is with much difficulty that he gets it cultivated to make bread for his family. That he made his original declaration, but has not received it. He refers, for further information, to his former declaration, on file in the WarDepartment. Joshua Mullins aged about 63, states that he is well acquainted with the present applicant, John Mullins, and that he is a brother to the old solider. That his brother, said John Mullins enlisted and served as he stated. That he has frequently heard him tell of his experiences in the service and has heard men who were taken prisoner with the said John Mullins, tell of John Mullins being with them. That he was taken prisoner to England with them and kept there until Peace was made. That he placed his honorable discharge and papers, as stated, into the hands of Richard Wan (?) and that he thinks his brother John Mullins did not see again, because Richard Wan (?) was immediately broken up and became insolvent. Floyd County, Kentucky. Silas P. Wooten, old Revolutionary War solider, states on oath, before James W. Brown Justice of the Peace, that he is well acquainted with John Mullins, old Revolutionary War soldier. That he knew him in the Revolutionary War, for 14 or 15 months, as an enlisted soldier. And then he was departed from that part of the army in which this deponent served. He understood afterward that he was taken prisoner by the British, at the Siege of Charleston, South Carolina. Letcher County, Kentucky. On this, 6th of May 1841, before Justice of the Peace in said county, appeared Nancy Mullins, resident of Letcher County, aged 73 years, who being first sworn, made oath: That she is the widow of John Mullins, who was a private in the Revolutionary War, and on account of the Revolutionary services of her late husband, John Mullins, she was enrolled on the pension rolls of the Kentucky agency. Nancy (her X mark) Mullins John Mullins of Floyd County, was inscribed on the roll of Kentucky, to commence 26th of May, 1823. Certificate of the pension was issued 10th of September 1823, and sent to Robert Walker, Esq., Prestonburg, Kentucky. On a separate slip was recorded: John Mullins, died 25th of February,1838. Elinor Mahon December 11, 1735 in St. Paul's Protestant Church, Baltimore, MD. 89. Elinor Mahon, born 1718; died April 26, 1770 in Rowan Co NC. Notes for William Roberts: Here is some information I have gathered on my ancestors I would appreciate your consideration and comments: #1 William and Elinor Roberts lived in Frederick Co., MD.? VA.? 1749-1754. [ There is a Frederick Twp. Next door to Whitpane and Gwynedd Twp in Pa. ] #2 William and Elinor sold 200 a. in Baltimore, MD. 7 Apr. 1757. Then sold the remaining part of "Friendship completed", 275 a. Baltimore, MD. 9 may 1763. #3 Edward Roberts [ William's brother or son ] was granted 260 a. in the forks of the Yadkin near the Boone family. [ Squire Boone was a Quaker and lived nearby in Bucks Co. Pa. He was dismissed from the Quaker church for tolerating the marriage of two of his children outside the Quaker faith. He proceeded to move to the forks of the Yadkin river in NC. Probably sometime in the 1750's. #4 William Roberts and wife Elinor were deeded 444 a. on Dutchman's Creek [ Yadkin tributary ]Rowan Co.,( now Davie ) NC. By the Earl of Granville in 1762. #5 Roberts, William of 'Patapsco,' in 1750 owned 50 a,, Friendship (153:84)What is Patapsco? #6 Roberts, William Baltimore, Friendship Complete 473 01 Apr. 1756 BC5/28;BC7/183 #7 Migrated with brother Edward and families from Gwynedd Twp. or Whitpain Twp. PA. in 1761( 1751?). ( Both of these areas are just north of Philadelphia, Pa.) I have gathered these bits and pieces over some period of time and have the following comments and questions. (A) William line was [ William s/o John Jr. s/o John Sr. s/o Andrew ] They were all from the Baltimore area with Andrew coming from Wales? about 1655. That would make them living in the Baltimore area over 100 years before William and Edward took up claims in the North Carolina wilderness. ( why? ) (B) One matter that I am trying to resolve is, were they Quakers? It would explain why they were persecuted during the revolution in Rowan, NC. They were put on a list of individuals who were not in favor of the Revolutionary War. all but Edward were pardoned in 1783 and only Edward's property was seized and sold. It might also explain why they would sell almost 500 acres and move, with a large family to the wilderness of North Carolina to begin with. (C) Does anyone know anything about Gwynedd township in Pennsylvania. I know it was a Welsh district. Was it also a strong Quaker settlement? Statement #7 the date 1761 just might be an error, or can you think of any reason they would give up there homes in Baltimore, move to Pennsylvania, then back to North Carolina. Were the Quakers of that day and age like some of the modern day cults which require you to sell all you own and move to a common area? (D) I know that the family had a very long term relationship with Saint Paul's Protestant church in Baltimore. William and Elinor were married there on 11 Dec. 1735. Was it a Quaker church at sometime? Or did William and Elinor convert to Quakers at some date? (E) They had a large family, eleven children. I cannot determine when or where they were born with the exception of Edward there eldest . the LDS church lists him as 1735 Gwynedd Twp, Pa,? Since they
