I believe I am your cousin. My grandmother's name was Maudie Madelyn Lee Combs, and my uncle's name was Wade "Butch" Combs. Nana and Pa had 5 kids: my mom (Mickey), Edward (who died shortly after being born), Butch, Lynn (who has passed away also), and Fred, who died when he was 3 months old. My mom is the only one left of her family. Mom has had us all laughing with stories about Butch when he was younger. Growing up I remember visiting McRoberts often and playing with our cousins, Butch's kids, Ernie and Bobby. Butch and his wife divorced when we were all young, she moved to Lexington, and we haven't had contact with the boys since,. Bobby was killed in a car accident around '92, and I'm not sure where Ernie is. In 2002 he was driving drunk, ran a stop light, and hit a motorcycle, killing the driver. He was sentenced to 7 years in prison, but I don't know where or if he served the whole time. Th! e sad thing is we only live about 30 minutes from Lexington, and my sister and I lived there while attending UK, but never saw either of them Butch did live in Dalton, GA for a while, and while I can't give the dates, I know it was in the late 1980's. He passed away in 1995 after battling cancer. As for my family (your aunt and cousins?), my mom and dad, sister, and I all live in Frankfort, KY. Our brother lives in Louisville, KY where he is an opthamologist (www.kseyeworks.com). He has 2 little boys, ages 5 and 3, and a little girl age 1. Marsha has a nursing degree, teaching degree, and real estate license, but at the moment is staying home to care for her 3: 2 boys, ages 9 and 4, and a girl age 8. I'm tracing the line of Sumners back through my grandmother, Susie (Sumner) Burnett, who lived in Perry County, Kentucky and died in 1975. Her parents were John "Shank" Sumner and Betty Jane (Combs) Sumner. John's parents were John and Lucinda (Craft) Sumner. John and Lucinda were apparently married in Letcher County, Kentucky, in 1866. The website has address was changed to: http://www.rootsweb.com/~kygenweb/esh/. There are some exciting changes taking place. The hospital cemetery is estimated to have as many as 4500 or more persons buried in it. There are 3 marked graves and one large tombstone. Our goal is to find the names of as many of these individuals as possible. To do this we will need all the help we can get. Locating information prior to the 1911 mandatory registration of deaths is very difficult. We ask that anyone who has any information to please pass it along for inclusion. Newspapers obits are excellent sources of information as well as local county court records/commitment papers. Currently I am gathering death certificates of those who died at the hospital. We have the years 1911 to 1915 posted, but with partial information listed. We are reworking this to include other data such as: place of birth, usual residence, name of parents and their place of birth, occupation, length of stay, cause of death & contributory cause of death. The majority of these persons were from counties other than Fayette and some were also born in other states and countries. Other data already posted includes: 1860 and 1870 Mortality Schedule of hospital deaths; individuals who were patients at the taking of the 1890 Veterans Census; patients listed in the 1870 Federal Population Census; 1833 & 1849 Cholera Deaths and some newspaper accounts of hospital deaths. In the coming months I will be working on gathering more census data, court records of deceased patients, lunacy bonds and locating more newspaper accounts. There are pictures of the Eastern State Hospital Cemetery taken in Nov. 2006. If any one wants information how to obtain a relatives records e-mail address is mahat@adelphia.net. Death certificates can be obtained through 1955 and the 1956 death certificates will out in the next 2-4 months.
