You have so much more info than I've been able to gather. I haven't been able to find too many facts at the library on my GGrandmother's family. I've been attempting to get to the Leslie County Courthouse. I think I may be able to find information on James and Martha there. Thanks again for your help.

Sallys parents were William M.Jent born Sep.15,1844 in Russell County Va.He died on sep.15,1894 in Letcher County Ky. and Nancy Smith [Watts] born Oct.26.1835,died onApr.23,1903. Nancys parents were Melvina Smith and Thomas Watts. William and Nancy were both buried originally in the Peamolter Cem.on Townsel Combs property at the mouth of Irishman Creek. They were later moved to Carr Fork Memorial Cem.William was in the Civil War.I here his records are interesting.I will try to get them.I think Williams parent may have been Elias Jent born1810 Russell Co.Va. and Rachel Garrett born 1815. I am not sure about it. There was an article in the Troublesome Creek Times on Oct.13,1993 on this Jent family. Ido not know where that paper is from,I guess somewhere near Letcher Co.Ihave still not found out anything on James Salyers or Martha.

Is this the same as the Battle of Whitesburg? Is there a reenactment of the Battle of Whitesburg planned? Acc. to the memoir, Harlan Co. member James Lewis died, Confederate John Collier died. Would love any info, hints Phyllis Richerson

Nov. 1, 1877. I also do not have the children of Garrett's other marriages. I do thank you for posting the children you posted for his marriages. You are correct that there have been instances where children were allowed to get married in those days at very early ages. Whether this is one or not? I don't know. I'm like you. I don't know what the truth is but what I posted concerning their marriage is the only confirmed info that I have on Caroline & James Garrett Hensley. Randy Oplinger

I consider sharing information as helping others. As you say, that would have made Caroline only about 12 years old at that time as you say when she should have had had James Garrett Hensley. That would not be normal, but it has happened in the past. Plus, people have had children prior to being married. I don't know what the real truth is. Do you show him as their child? If so, what birthdate do you have? Thanks! Darrell

But, a check of the marriage records concerning James Garrett "Garr" Hensley & Caroline Brittian in book A page 116 at the Harlan Court House will show the following notation. "Below is the note from parents where they state it is O.K. for their dau to get married. June the tenth 1873 Mr. Camel E. Hurst: My son James G. Hensley and Caroline Brittain has agreed to marry and we aint got the money to pay for the lisons now we will arrang it shortly we the parents are both willing (signed) Wilson Hensley James Brittain" With this info also provided. "Source: Harlan Footprints, Volume 1, Number 2, December 1982. "The marriage itself is recorded on Book A Page 16 in the Harlan County Court Clerk's office. The date of the marriage was on the 12 June at Wilson' Hensley's, performed by H.F. Hensley, witnessed by William B. Hensley & William Brittain. By 1870 census records, James Garrard Hensley would have been about 18 years old and Caroline Brittain about 15." Whether this information is correct or not. I have no idea but it is the only thing available now days for us to go on. If this info is correct then Caroline would have been 12 years old when she had the son you list born 1870 James Garrett Hensley, Jr.. Again Darrell if you take this as blasting you, that is not what it is meant to be. It is the recorded facts at Harlan Court House. Randy Oplinger

    1. Harlan Co Battalion deaths, reenactment
    2. Richerson
    3. Hello A Civil War sketch by Ella V. Preston on Don Chesnut's webpage tells of the death of Harlan Co Battalion member James Lewis in a "late autumn" at a house at the head of Big Cowan. This matches family lore that our ancestor Lewis was killed at a house during the Civil War. Does anyone know if this would have been the Battle of Leatherwood? In Major Blankenship's Daily Reports, he gives only three Battalion deaths: one from a wound on Oct 19, 1862; and two killed Dec. 13. The Preston article says that a Confederate soldier, John Collier, was also killed when James Lewis was killed. I would love to have any info that's out there. Also, is the reenactment of the Battle of Leatherwood to be held Oct 20-30? If so, I'm unable to attend, but would love to be in contact with someone who could ask around about Lewis. Thank you all Phyllis Richerson descendant of the Lewises

    1. RE: Gibson/Gipson
    2. Hi Joanne, Ozias Denton Gibson Is my great grandfather, and I have been trying to sort out the Gibson Clan for quite awhile. I do have a David Gibson married to Malissa Gibson I have Malissa as the daughter of John Sherman Gibson son of Ozias Denton Gibson. Ozias Denton Gibson was in TN in 1850 and 1860. He is on the census for those years. There is a Denton Gibson with land grants in Clay Co., Ky. I will have to look up the years. I believe it is about 1856 My Father's first wife was Alice Gibson, she had three sisters that I know of: Susannah Gibson, she married (my Mother's halfbrother) Sylvester "Silly" Isaacs Son of Hiram Isaacs and his first wife Martha Ann Sweeny. Nancy Gibson, she married Johnny Hall (my double cousin) He is the son of John Henry Hall and Amy Johnson. Josy Gibson my Mother did not think she ever married. I have still to find these sister's parents I have still to put my grandmother Matilda in the home of Ozias Denton Gibson, but in the Wise Co. VA Marriages he and Nancy are listed as her parents. You might try talking to Loeatta Gibson Reddington. Eloise Esakmar@aol.com
