While Darlene Sizemore and I were indexing the 1930 Leslie Co. KY census, we often had difficulty determining the actual names on the forms. To assist in deciphering some of them, we referred to the INDEX TO KY BIRTHS, among other resources, for guidance to given names, etc. Our index presents the names as we saw them on the census forms. The index, available on cd, is a valuable resource for identifying those born after 1911. HOWEVER, a comparison of the index to the 1930 Leslie Co census, shows many of those early births are not included in the index. I do not know if the same is true of all KY counties but can only verify that many children listed on the 1930 Leslie Co. census were not in the index! This is simply to alert you, that when using the birth index, (which is only a source leading to the actual birth certificate), you may not find the person listed for whom you are looking - for many reasons: 1- typographical errors in creating index 2- misreading of actual birth record 3- birth certificate never filed 4- birth certificate never existed. My suggestion is that you search the index under both the mother's maiden name and the child's name, using any variety of spellings. Be aware that even then, although the person existed, the birth may not be listed! Good luck in your family searching! Hermina Brinkmeier (Dayton, OH) Exploring branches of the family tree!
