I think I can show a direct line back to James T that is good enough for DNA... only problem will be getting my brother to do it unless I pay for it lol.. he is tight! We were lucky in a way that there is not than many generations in our family going back to James T... you probably already have this land deal, but here it is again just in case.. it shows your great something grandfather and mine... James T's son Isaac Lewis was my gg-grandfather.. his son Thaddeus 'Thad' was my g-grandfather .. his son Hiram was my grandfather - his son Burchell was my dad. My grandpa Hiram was born in 1862 and died when I was 11 years old. He and I were really close. I guess I was the only one who wanted to listen to his tales about growing up on Hurrican Creek in Leslie Co. The farm my mom bought after my dad died was land that had been in my family for now nearly 200 years. The old chimney stones for the log cabin my grandpa was born in lay in one of our fields just down the creek from our house. Grandpa and I would go for a walk around the hill and rest on those stones. He talked about life when he was a child, and could remember a bit of the civil war, his parents, grandparents and great grandparents, so I knew about Isaac and Thad as a child, but I didn't know who Isaac's father was until I started doing research and later found that land deal on the net. I had heard that he was but had no other confirmation. I'll see what else I have on here that stands for proof. Fay Perry County Deed Book A, page 186 Heirs of James Lewis Deed. Parents of James T. Lewis 1735 Wales, we know by legend his father named as Nathaniel Lewis born about 1710 to 1714 in Ireland. Nathaniel married a girl named Elvira Helton, born about 1715 Ireland, and she died in 1737 Wales when James T. was only 2 years old. Nathaniel and Elvira both reported born in Ireland, but from Welsh born parents (unnamed by Research) who had migrated to find work then both children were born in Ireland. Our research into year 2008 has not identified the names of their parents. Why? Lack of written records. Research proves of those years, unless you owned land, there is no written record of you or that you existed. When records of James T. Lewis himself were found by descents and then handed down to descents, the bundle of data burned in two fires in Hyden, KY in the 1970s, only those who had read the writings dictated what was said. James T. Lewis 1735-1825 indicated the name of his father and mother, and knew he had arrived in America between ages 8 and 9. James T. told many things to his children from two wives. We LEWIS researchers found several ship records of 1743 to 1746 with the names of Nathaniel Lewis, but none of them with child James listed. Nathaniel Lewis. We Lewis Genealogists also found that a Gideon Lewis was born in 1748 in Virginia but cannot find the name of his mother whom Nathaniel married and helped raise young James T. Lewis in early Virginia Coastal plains. There are other Gideon Lewis and this has caused much bad information, about the North American Colonial born, half brother to James T. Lewis. Many are still looking for names of Nathaniel & Elvira's parents. James T. Lewis & first wife he identified as Ms. Griffon / Griffen, (ubproved as of 2008) named their first child, a girl in 1770 NC ELVIRA LEWIS who married William Shepherd b.1770. The second child was JAMES LEWIS II - 1771NC-1865KY my direct ancestor. JAMES & ELVIRA are brother and sister, same Mother Another child was born in 1772 they named Gideon who died in 1799 in North Carolina, and is the reason he is not named on the death records of James T. Lewis in 1825 Perry County, KY (USA). Queries over the Internet email to ask about Nathaniel Lewis & Elvira Helton as parents or about their parents is a quest of frustration as this is still a secret. According to James T. Lewis and his children who left any Bible Records they related that when Nathaniel & Elvira married they did just the opposite of their own parents, and returned to Wales, to find work. Elvira died, and Lewis family in London, England, asssisted Nathaniel with young James, to get passage to the Colonies in 1740’s to Virginia ports. I and every Lewis researcher is still looking for Elvira Helton Lewis gravesite in Wales, again frustration. In year 2000 at least Three LEWIS family members were over there as tourists looking for clues. Others have visited through the years, and no one has uncovered anything, except the parents and family of Roderick McIntosh 1775-1879 Leslie County, KY. On various Internet sites, there are those that make claims about Nathaniel Lewis, and some linked to our Nathaniel. Among the very few DNA projects in the USA is only a few men from Kentucky roots of LEWIS. In year 2008, no DNA matches exist to determine JAMES T. LEWIS 1735 Wales-1825 KY to any specific person of WALES or IRELAND. Additionally, the current DNA testing of descents of ABNER LEWIS early Pioneer in Harlan County, KY, or of a WILSON Lewis Pioneer of Harlan Co. JOHN in CA **************Gas prices getting you down? RESPONSE: Hello, On the 1880 Clay Co. Fed. Census, Daniel and Mary Ann COPE LEWIS appear as follows: Dwelling 135-136 LEWIS, Daniel, 25, b. VA; father b. KY; mother b. VA . .Mary Ann, 25, wife, b. KY; parents b. KY . .James, 5, son, b. KY . . Sarah M., 3, dau, b. KY . .Nancy, 7 months, dau (b. Oct.), b. KY NOTE: I see NO marriage in Clay Co. on my Clay Co. Marriage Indexes. On my annotated 1880 Clay Co. by Mr. James WELCH, he indicates a reference to Daniel LEWIS in the 1860 Harlan Co., KY Fed. Census. However, I don't see him there. On the 1870 Clay Co., there is this Daniel LEWIS listed. It does seem this is the family that he has been linked to; however, I have no proof of that one way or the other: Dwelling 106 LEWIS, Hiram, 67, b. Va - farmer . .Lucinda, 60, housekeeper . .Hiram, 21 - work on farm . .Israel, 18, - work on farm . .Daniel, 16 - work on farm . .Mary, 14 - at home NOTE: This family of Hiram LEWIS was on the 1850 and 1860 Harlan Co. Fed. Census. Interestingly though, it appears for one reason or the other, Daniel was not listed on the 1860 Harlan Co. which appears as follows: Dwelling 18-18 LEWIS, Hiram, 57, b. Va . .Lucinder, 50, b. KY . .Nancy, 18, b. KY . .Hiram, 10, b. KY . .Israel, 8, b. KY . .Mary, 4, b. KY On the 1850 in Harlan Co. the annotated census by DUNHAM states as follows: Dwelling 3952 - 3960 LEWIS, Hiram, 47, b. VA . .Lucinda, 40, b. SC (dau. of William JENKINS & Elizabeth ROARK) . .Elizabeth, 19, b. KY (mar. 1853 to Ambrose METCALF) . .Jesse, 17, b. KY (mar. 1854 to Nancy TURNER) . .James, 15, b. KY (mar. Lucy?? SMITH) . .Abner, 13, b. KY (mar. Cynthia) . .Eleanor, 10, (d. 1857 in HC KY) . .Nancy, 8, b. KY (mar. 1861 to John Calvin HOWARD) . . Hiram, 1, b. KY (mar. Easter, dau of Charles ROBINSON and Catherine) On the 1870 Clay Co., this is "probably" the Mary Ann COPE who he married: Dwelling 129 COPE, Sally, 45, b. VA (Sallie BREWSTER mar. 3-24-1850 in Harlan Co. to John CoPE) . .Mary, 18, at home * * * . .Martha, 16 - at home . .Jacob, 14 - work on farm . .John, 12 - work on farm . .Albert, 9 NOTE: Sally doesn't appear to be around by the time of the 1880 although several of her children remain in Clay Co. on the 1880 Fed. Census. In his school room, he had one black board, two erasers and one box of chalk, one coal bucket and shovel, one water bucket and a dipper, along with forty desks of varying sizes. This experience left an impression on Mr. Lewis and motivated within him a desire to improve the educational opportunities for all Leslie County youth. After three years of teaching, Mr. Lewis was transferred to the Central Office. After working in the defense industry for a number of years, Hayes returned to the Central Office in 1949 and remained there until he retired in 1975. Fifty of these schools were one room schools, housing grades one through eight. Mr. Lewis also was associated with a variety of businesses beginning in 1938, including general merchandising, co-owner of franchise dealerships for Chevrolet, International and Subaru, and coal, oil and gas properties. Hayes traveled many places and met many people, but he was always most comfortable at home in Hyden, Kentucky with his native Leslie Countians. He received many awards, but one of the awards he cherished the most was his recognition in 2005 at the Leslie County High School graduation ceremony for his dedication to the young people in the county. Mr. Lewis leaves surviving on son, Hayes Frederick Lewis and wife Ulene; two granddaughters, Cheryl Lewis, and Melissa Lewis. He leaves surviving six grandchildren. He also leaves surviving one brother, Odell Lewis and wife Alma. Mr. Lewis leaves surviving a host of nieces and nephews and other close friends and relatives. Hayes was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Elva; his daughter Janeth; and his parents, Sam and Malinda Kilburn Lewis. He was also preceded in death by six brothers, Willard, Dewey, Zora, Oakley, Dan and Opal Lewis; and three sisters, Orgie Hendrix, Nannie, Blair and Bonnie Hilton. Services for Hayes Lewis were conducted on Wed, June 6, 2007 at 10am at the Walker Funeral Home Chapel in Hyden, KY with Reverend Billy Joe Lewis, Mike Stanley and John Newell officiating. Mr. Lewis was laid to rest on Wed, June 6, 2007 at the Lewis Family Cemetery at Trace Fork, Yearddiss, KY with full Masonic rites. Walker Funeral Home of Hyden, KY was in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations made to the Central Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 880, Hyden, KY 41749 or to the Presbyterian Child Welfare Agency, 116 Buckhorn Lane, Buckhorn, KY 41721.
