Recently, a new member asked about trying to prove her ancestry of Cherokee Bloodlines in Southeastern, KY Counties. The Cherokee, Chickasaw, and Shawnee were the three major tribes that influenced Kentucky. Cherokee continued to live after 1754 in the southeastern portion of the state. Some of the early settlers did intermarry with these Native Americans. Very few records can be found for Native Americans in Kentucky because: There were/are no Native American reservations in Kentucky. Since there were no tribes living within the state, the government of Kentucky did not keep records of the tribes. Due to the prejudices of the day, Native Americans chose not to disclose their heritage in public documents. This is why many people have difficulty in finding evidence of Native American ancestry in census records Agencies that may be helpful to you in your research: Cherokee Nation, P. O. I just had someone mention yesterday that Mary and Gilbert had a daughter Mollie. I've been doing some research trying to find any other connection and I checked the 1920 and saw where Alex had a step grandson named Oscar Brock living there. When I checked the Leslie births there was an Oscar Brock born to Martha Brock, and Gilbert and Mary had a daughter Martha. I've checked everything else I can think of and I haven't found anything else. I would say my only chance of getting positive proof would be a death certificate hoping it would list husband and parents. Thanks for the good investigating. Thank you, Jerry

Fed census is transcribed and sold by Hermina BRINKMEIER. The 1900 Leslie Co. is sold by Darlene SIZEMORE. 1900 Dwelling 032 - Badcreek BROCK, Gilbert, 51, husband, mar. 28 yrs, b. Nov 1848, b. KY; parents b. KY . Mary, 44, wife, b. Aug 1855, mar. 28 yrs., 12 born; 8 living, b. KY; parents b. KY . James, 21, son, b. Apr 1879, KY . William, son, b. Feb. 1883, KY . Anna, 13, dau, b. KY 1910 - BadCreek , ED139 Dwelling 139-135 BROCK, Alex, 47, husband, mar. 3 times, mar. 4 years (I realize this makes no sense but it is what it says), b. KY; parents b. KY . Mary, 55, wife, mar. 2 times, mar. 4 yrs, 13 born; 8 living, b. KY; parents b. KY NOTE: What may have happened and would make sense is that Gilbert died and Mary married this Alex BROCK and these two have only been married for 4 years. . Ollie, 15, dau, KY . Ingram, 14, son, KY . William, 12, son, KY . Theophlis, 10, son, KY . Charley, 8, son, b. KY . Mollie, 9 "STEPDAU", b. KY - - a further indication this is a 2nd marriage for this Mary and Gilbert is out of the picture one way or the other. As I now look back at the 1900 Leslie, this could very well be the Alex (or sometimes spelled as ELEC or similiar) BROCK that you see in the 1910: Dwelling 035 - Badcreek - only a few dwellings from Gilbert and Mary BROCK, Ellic, 35, husband, b. May 1865, mar. 9 years, b. KY; parents b. KY . Emily, 24, wife, b. June 1875, mar. 9 years, 3 born; 3 living, b. KY; parents b. KY . Engerion???, 4, son, b. Dec 1892, KY . William, 4 , son, b. Aug 1895, KY . Theophulus, son, b. Feb 1900, KY Therefore, the children: Ingram, William and Theopulus would definitely be Alex/Elec BROCK's children of his marriage to Emily UNK. Mollie, the stepdau., is the apparent child of Gilbert BROCK and Mary. The child, Charley, must also be Alex/Elec BROCKs. Joyce Taylor Collins La Palma, CA

I was recently talking to one of my husband's relatives, Marie Vallance Sizemore, and she filled me in on who is buried in the small Roark Cemetery located right above Taylor Roark's home on the mountainside. Taylor's home is right next to where the Jack's Creek Elementary School used to be. Buried in this cemetery is: Betty Roark Slusher Vallance Fee Sizemore and her sister, Mary Roark Slusher. They are both daughters of James "Crap" Roark, who is also buried there. Also buried there are Roscoe Fee, Margaret and Berry Slusher, Martha Slusher Baker Montgomery, daughter of the above mentioned Betty. Also: Lloyd Roark and wife Molly, D.S. Roark, Buford Hoskins, Golden Roark, Charlie Roark, Lucy Roark, John Roark, another Lucy Roark, Frank Slusher, Darus Slusher, Carlo Roberts, and a number of young children, some without head stones. There may be a few more graves there that she couldn't remember. Approximately one mile up the Jack's Creek road and just a little further up the road from Taylor Roark's home is Raymond and Edna Roark's home. On the hillside above their house is another small Roark cemetery. Found here are: Leonard Roark (son of James "Crap" Roark and wife, Martha Collett) and Leonard's wife, Ruth Collett Roark. Leonard was born September 6, 1896, d. November 9, 1940, and Ruth was born July 23, 1901, d. May 1995. Also there : a stillborn child of Leonard and Ruth's, Leonard and Ruth's oldest son, Herman Roark (b. May 4, 1917, d. May 17, 1971), and a stillborn son of Jeffrey and Sharon (Hacker) Roark.
