    1. [KYLESLIE] ADAM WOOTON (Wooten) 1840
    2. I am asking for share of information on death dates of ADAM WOOTON born 1839/1840 son of Irvine Wooton & Nancy Feltner. WHY? In years 2000 I had massive Hard Drive failures on a new HP Computer then, and cannot say anything except it was junk. After 4 HD failures on that machine, I lost from my databases much genealogy and some photos forever. Turned out is was wired defective from the power supply to the start & off buttons by the factory. Among those lost were ADAM Wooton and his father IRVINE WOOTON parents data. Does anyone have ADAM & IRVINE death dates and location of burials? Would appreciate any share of your data. > What I do have is the following family for ADAM WOOTON. > ADAM Wooton md 1st wife, WINNIE HUFF 1844-1896, do Mahala Begley 1815 & John C. 1. [KYLESLIE] FWD: School Elections of Past
    2. SCHOOL ELECTIONS By Jess Wilson I don't know why I awoke this morning thinking about School Elections. With as many more pleasant things to think about I had to remember the school elections law that was passed by an unthinking legislature during the 1930's, the era of the Great Depression. There are not many of "my readers" that are old enough to remember this time of hunger, hunger for food, hunger for decent clothing, hunger for jobs, meaningful employment. One source of job for young people was school teaching at the many one and two teacher schools. The KY law at that time provided for the election of a trustee, a local person to supervise the operation of the local school And most important hire the teacher, Importance, hiring of These trustees were elected by the local patron of the school's district. Such elections caused much discord between neighbors. At one school a quarrel became a shooting and a cousin was killed. At our school the reaction was not as violent. One year my father stood for election with the intention of hiring one of his nieces. A local man asked him to stand down so that he would be elected. He promised Dad that he would hire the niece the first year. Against the advice of cousin of the other man, who said that the fellow would not hire his niece, Dad agree to stand down. The man was elected. Sure enough the cousin was right. As soon as the election was over the man went to town and came home late that afternoon leading a milk cow. I have always felt ashamed of the events that followed when school began. It was not the teacher's fault that her father was minus a milk cow so that she could have a job. I may have had a spat with her, I don't remember. It may have been that I just took a notion to go to the other school. I don't know what followed after I left but soon all my brothers and my sister joined me in the longer walk to the other school. Soon we were joined by all our cousins. Soon the legislature placed the responsibility for hiring of teachers with the county board of education. Things quieted down but I suppose that as long as anyone involved lives so will the hate and strife linger on. BY:jswlsn@prtcnet.org JESS WILSON of CLAY County

    3. Hi John, hope all is well with you and family. I wan't to let you know that I read all of the e-mails that I get and when I run across one like yours then I can respond because it affects me. Long ago I placed all of the material that I gathered on the names Jones,Maggard, Wooton, France, on the K-Leslie web site. I didn't know of any place else to submit the information. If there is a place for it on Roots Web, let me know and I will send it to them. With reguard to Polly Jane Wooton, I wasn't able to prove that Moccason Bill Cornet was her father so I didn't use the information. This summer at the Jones ,Wooton, Napier reunion, I was able to locate Polly's place of burial and have pictures of her head stone. If you want a picture just let me know. She Is burried at the heat of Lower McIntosh. Rather then type all if this information about the Wooton's, I am sending you the file in the next e-mail. 1. [KYLESLIE] Rootsweb Donated Data of Leslie County, KY
    2. _http://userdb.rootsweb.com/regional.html#USA_ (http://userdb.rootsweb.com/regional.html#USA) The above is the source address for list members to search for any data contributed. It appears in my judgement, that Leslie County, KY Gen Web site hosted by Elva Morgan, contains much more data of Leslie County, than what is donated to Rootsweb. Perhaps too many are still producing for profit the government data, that is contained in County Records, rather than to be donated for research by others seeking their family data. I suggest that anyone interested book mark the site above, and view the lack of Leslie County Data. Perhaps Military data is a good source for your records. LISTDAD, JOHN in CA

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/GBB.2ACI/1924.1.1.1.1.1.1.3.1 Message Board Post: Phyliss: 53 Cemeteries in Ky have received the Cemetery Preservation Grant, three cemeteries from Harlan County was included in the grant process, Harlan will receive $ 9,100. The maxium grant a group can receive is $25,000 and the lowest is $ 1,000. A one to one local match is required. County cemetery boards, state agencies, local governments and nonprofit organizations may apply. The three cemeteries located in Harlan are, Ward Cemetery, Wix Howard Cemetery and the Sunshine Cemetery. I would encourage everyone to send in the cemetery of choice to be considered for the grant. To many of our cemeteries in the eastern Kentucky area are slowly disappearing, overgrown, headstone broken, and just plain vandalized. Another area is the historical places are being torn down to make room for parking lots, they bring in more cash flow than restoring buildings for historical value for generations to come. Harlan was the leading coal producers for over fifty years, all the coal camps have disappeared and the beautiful schools that were built are now closed and are being demolished. We as adults should speak up and try to save some of our history, let the politicians know, that we are determined to work for this valuable cause. If we don't, we will only be able to look back and say, "That parking lot, that is where the school stood that my great-grandfather attended, "See that baseball field, that was where I was born and grew up, once, way back yonder it was a thriving coal camp. If we don't then all we will be able to hold onto are memories and memories at some point in time start to fade. Elva
