One of my great-uncles John Calvin Adams married Tennesse Poe, the daughter of Isaac Poe who was a brother to your James. I suspect James was named for an uncle as a James Poe, b. ca 1816 is in the 1850 census along with Samuel Poe, b. ca 1817. NOTE: I believe date of the 2nd marriage should be 1878 to match ages or 1880 to be in sequence with other marriages listed on this page. Also, this would explain the 1880 census listing with Emmaline Fannin as the step-daughter. You can check original record at the Lawrence County, KY court house. James & Nancy are in Little Blaine Precinct of Lawrence County in 1900, with four children James m. 3rd at age 66 on 11 April 1908 in LCKY to Ellen Bradley, age 35, b. ca 1873 per Lawrence Marriage Records. James & Ellen are in Lawrence County in 1910 with a stepdaughter. Census record indicates James was married 3 times and Ellen married 2 times.
