I just don't know how or why they sometimes go by the Charles last name. All info I have shows that Mathew was a Scarberry and Vi was a Young before marrying Mathew. There are records that Vi later married a Coleman. Did the people in your family know them as a Charles or as a Scarberry? Tell me what information you have, and what you are looking for, and I will share what I know. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. John & Nancy were married in Lawrence County in 1887. Nancy is the oldest daughter of William "Charlie" Charles and Lydia Pack Charles. I have seen a Lawrence County census record showing John & Nancy Scarberry with their children listed. Virgie is one of the children listed. Have you seen that? Adams, and found that he died 06 July 2000 in Catlettsburg, Boyd Co. KY. You might find an obituary (check the Boyd County Public Library, Genealogy Room or the Ashland Daily News, or the Big Sandy News) and find if he had relatives living at that time. In 2002, I corresponded briefly with Morton's niece. I do not know if she has info on the family or not. Email me directly if you want contact info. I'm not quite sure what information you are wanting. There was an Isaac Salyers, age 76, who died 12 September 1933 in Lawrence County, Kentucky at Busseyville, at the county infirmary and was buried on the infirmary's grounds. No information is given about his family. In 1860, in the census of Scott Co., Virginia (Estillville Post Office), there is an "Isaac Salyers, age 2, b. VA" in the household of William Mead 49 and wife Susanah age 24 and three of their children., apparently the son of Mary Salyers, age 30, b. in VA, whose occupation is listed as "Spinster"(meaning a spinner of wool), living in the same household as Family 699. Do you think any of Morton's children are still living and might you have a way to contact them? If you look at the 1930 census, you can see why I believe my Isaac Salyer/s was living or renting from them. Malinda Salyer/s, Isaac's sister, was Martin Vanburen Berry's wife. It had been rumored that in his later years he went to KY to let his sister help him as he was poor and had lost a leg as a young man in the mines of VA. Since Martin's mother was an Adams, I'm thinking there is a reason Isaac was living w/ Morton and Alma. Morton was a 1st cousin twice removed of Malinda Salyer Berry's husband, Martin. Whew... make sense? :-) Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. William Henry states on marriage and census records he was born in Magoffin County, Ky. Oct 11, 1872. Sometimes the year of his birth varies from 1870-1873, but the month is always the same. There is a marriage record for Baley Bowling & Sarilda Carty married Jan 12, 1872 in Magoffin County, Ky. This record seems to fit the timeline and could be Wm. Henry's parents. Most of the family histories or trees suggest this Bailey is "Caleb Bailey Bowling" son of Henry H. and Nellie Blankinship Bowling. I am not so sure and here's why: Caleb Bailey Bowling married Slyvania Cantrell June 20, of 1873. They had a child Henry who was born in 1875 and died March 27, 1912 in Morgan Co. Ky. Bailey & Slyvania state in census records they have 15 children and 14 are still living. So, the one that isn't living must be Henry. Okay, this is what I am questioning: I found a death record for James K. Bowling born 1874 and died November 1875 in Morgan Co. Ky. His parents are Bailey and Sarildo Bowling both born in Va. (This couldn't be Bailey and Sylvania Cantrell's child, would Bailey mistakenly put down his first wife's name, doesn't seem likely). And the census records would say they had 15 children with 13 still living. My Sarilda has stated on census records she had two children, one still living. I think this Bailey could be my ancestor and not Caleb Bowling, son of Henry H. My Sarilda remarried in Oct of 1880 to Moses Childers in Lawrence Co. Ky. Possibly this other Bailey died. Also possible is this Bailey had another first name and was much older than Caleb Bailey. This is all so confusing. Can anyone shed any light on this.
