My 3rd great grandfather John Lowe, born 1810, who lived in Lawrence Co. KY was married to a Hannah Cox, born 1811. Now John Lowe had a sister Nancy Lowe that married a John Cox. Are we talking about the same Cox line???? There are so many Cox families in and around eastern Kentucky and West Virginia, that it is hard to figure them out. I have the parents of Hannah Cox-Lowe and John Cox who married Nancy as the children of William Cox and Sarah White. Any help in this question will be appreciated. There is an authorization by Harrison Young for the marriage of his daughter, Vianah Young to "Matteson Scarberry". The 1900 Lawrence Co census has Vianne Scarberry listed as a Widow and has her seven children living with her. They are William, Henry, Garfield, Lonzo, Peter, Stella, and Mary. In the 1910 Lawrence Co Census, her son, William is listed as "William Charles" and is living with his wife Nancy and children Mary, Edgel, and Josephine and also his brother Garfield is living with him. Then in the 1920 Lawrence Co Census, William is listed as a Scarberry again! He is living with his wife Nancy and children Edgel, Josie, Ray, Willie, James A., Lizzie, and Joe. His brother Garfield is also living with him in 1920. Then in the 1930 Lawrence Co Census, William is once again listed as William Charles. Living with him are his children Edgel, Josie, William Jr, Lizzie, Joe, James A., Trisha, and Steven. His brother Garfield is also listed as living with him. After this, all the other records of this family that I find always list them with the last name of Charles, including their death records. I cannot find out why they change back and forth from Scarberry to Charles. I have been searching for an answer to this riddle for years, and have not found anyone who knows the answer.
