    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/EBB.2ACE/2517.1 Message Board Post: Hello, Please know that I am NOT related and don't have complete explanations for what all I am going to present to you. However, hopefully it will give you some clues on how to proceed. What I did was try to do some census research for you. Here is what I found: 1860 Wise Co., VA Dwelling 626 ELKINS, William, 30, b. VA . .Jane, 30, b. KY . .Charles F., 8, b. VA . .Sarah A., 5, b. VA . .John H., 3, b. VA . .Nancy E., 8 mo's, b. VA By 1870, it appears to me that your Isaac William ELKINS has died and the remains of the family are now in Letcher Co., KY as follows: Dwelling 183-183 - 1870 P. O. Whitesburg, Prec. #1 ELKINS, Jane, 41, b. KY . .Sarah, 15, b. VA (looks like Sarah A. from 1860 Wise) . .Charles, 18, b. KY(looks like Charles F. from 1860 Wise) . .John, 13, b. VA (looks like John H. from 1860 Wise) . .Hiram, 8, b. VA NOTE: The TWO obvious problems I see with the 1870 are: (1) where is Joseph F. and the (2) where is Nancy E. ; assume she died.) Now, move ahead 10 more years to 1880 and still in Letcher Co., KY: Dwelling #_____ (from LDS free site) ELKINS, Jane, 52, b. KY; parents b. KY . .Sarah, dau, 25, b. VA; father b. KY; mother b. NC . .Floyd, son, 8, b. KY; parents b. KY . Jesse, "grandson, 4 mo's, b. KY; father b. VA; mother b. KY NOTE: I will go back and look at the microfilm for the 1880 because it does not make any sense there is a son, Floyd, age 8. It is possible this was perhaps Charles who was a Charles F. or you state you have the Joseph F. who may have been a Joseph Floyd. In EITHER case, if it is an 8 year old, her first husband was already out of the picture so the father was someone else or so it would seem to me. Now we move to the 1900 and we are now in Harlan Co., Upper Poor Fork and things are still a bit confusing but. . . it still appears to be Mary "Jane" or so I think: 1900 Harlan Co., KY Upper Poor Fork - Dist #3 Dwelling 717 CRAGER, Samuel, 70, b. Dec. 1829, b. VA; mar. 36 yrs, b. VA; parents b. VA - farmer . .Mary J., 71, b. Feb. 1829, b. VA; mar. 36 yrs, 2 born; 2 living, parents b. VA . .Aaron, 35, b. Mar 1865, single, b. VA . .Joseph, 33, b. Mar 1867, b. VA (from reading the 1900 microfilm, it states Joseph was a widow and that his parents were born in VA) ELKINS, David, 13, b. Mar 1887, b. VA - grandson NOTE: Please note that this Joseph is listed as a CRAGER and not an ELKINS so the question becomes were they this couple's children or Samuel CRAGER's sons from some earlier marriage. Hard to know. Or, is it an entirely different family. Next there is a JENKINS family listed with husband, wife, children and this person in their home. Another Joseph ELKINS!! ELKINS, Joseph, 22, b. Nov 1877, single, boarder, b. KY; parents b. KY I did not mention prior but when I checked Laurel Co., there were no ELKINS even present in the 1870, 1880 and 1900 census records. However, it is now 1910 and we are in Laurel Co.: Raccoon Precinct - 1910 Laurel Dwelling 9-9 ELKINS, Joseph, head, 49, mar. 2 times, mar. 4 years, b. VA; parents b. VA - farmer . .Nancy, wife, 20, mar. 1, mar. 4 yrs, 2 born; 2 living, b. KY; parents b. KY . .Jack Anderson, son, 9 mo's, b. KY . Mary, 78, WIDOW, 8 born; 4 living, b. VA; parents b. VA NOTE: I have no idea why it says 2 were born and 2 are living when it appears it is only one that is living at this time. There are very often these types of mistakes in the census, however. When I looked through the Laurel Co. marriage records I found these: ELKINS, Joseph L. to CAUDILL, Nancy M. on February 22, 1906 in Laurel Co. There were also these: ELKINS. D. C. to VAUGHN, Dora on March 25, 1909 ELKINS, David to PARSLEY, Ethel on June 30, 1933 ELKINS, Henry to CORUM, Alabama on Oct. 31, 1905 ELKINS, Jack to McKNIGHT , Lida on Oct 6, 1930 ELKINS, William J. to ARGENBRIGHT, Kittie F. on Nov 22, 1882 ELKINS, W. J. to ARGENBRIGHT, Kittie L. on Nov 22, 1882 Again the 1920 ties back to the 1900 Harlan Co. so makes me think it is the SAME family: Dwelling 197-198 ELKINS, Joe, head, 57, b. VA; parents b. VA . .Nancy M., wife, 30, b. KY; parents b. KY . .Jack A., son, 10, b. KY . .David S., son, 6, b. KY . .Mary M., dau, 3, b. KY . .Aaron, Jr., son, 6 mo's, b. KY . Aaron, Sr., BROTHER, 69, divorced, b. VA ; parents b. VA Dwelling 198-199 ELKINS, Dave, head, 36, b. VA; parents b. VA . .Dora, wife, 33, b. KY; father b. KY; mother b. VA . .Bertha M., dau, 3, b. Ky . .Daisy, dau, 3 mo's, b. KY Again, I am NOT related so far as I know. I simply did some research for you. Please remember to help others along the way. Hope you can connect with some other researchers who can help you get this straightened out. Looks to me that the first husband of Mary Jane died or left and she took up with the 2nd husband and perhaps Aaron and Joseph are his. Don't know if they were married or not when these sons were born or if they were his children and she raised them. But, there is definitely something in this situation and is not straight forward. 3. Joyce thank you very much, the F in Joseph's name is for Franklin. I know the one you found in 1910 in Laurel Co. is him, on the records for his birth in Wise for father it listed Isaac Williams ? and Mary Jane Elkins as the mother. I was wondering if his father could have been a Williams and not an Elkins at all, and Mary and Isaac never married until she married Samuel Crager? I didn't know about Aaron, Joseph's brother, I do know that one of Joseph's sons was named Isaac Aaron b. 1918 he is the one that married my great-aunt, it's her son I'm doing this research for, once again I can't thank you enough.
