Black Burial: Pencader Cemetery Glasgow New Castle County Delaware, USA ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ----- Dr. Samuel Henry Black Birth: Dec. 20, 1782 Death: Apr. 17, 1827 Glasgow New Castle County Delaware, USA Physician who was educated at University of Pennsylvania, School of Medicine. Samuel H. Black married Dorcas A. Middleton on 12 March 1807 in New Castle County, Delaware. It is reported that Dr. Black developed an inoculation for small pox, following Dr. Edward Jenner's lead. In the early 1800's, small pox was decimating the local Native American tribes in the Glasgow-Bear, DE, area. To save their lives and protect them, Dr. Black took his small pox vaccination and administered it to the Native Americans living at Cooch's bridge. In the Federal US Censuses of 1810 and 1820 for Delaware, New Castle County, Pencader Hundred, there are three FREE African-Americans (unnamed - husband, wife, and daughter) listed as part of Dr. Samuel H. Black's household. Samuel Henry Black, his wife Dorcas Middleton Black, and many of their descendants are buried in marked graves in the cemetery at Pencader Presbyterian Church in Glasgow, DE. In 1819 Dr. Black presented the first paper on the value of agricultural reform to the Agricultural Society of New Castle County, DE. Dr. Black was a DE state politician. He served on the Delaware College (now the University of DE) Board of Trustees. On October 7, 1824, General Marie Joseph Paul Yves Roch Gilbert Du Motier Lafayette named Dr. Black's farm in Glasgow, DE, "La Grange". Lafayette remarked to Dr. Black that Black's farm and house reminded Lafayette of his estate in France. Lafayette visited Dr. Black at Black's farm while the marquis was travelling through the area on his way to attend the wedding of Dorcas Van Dyke and Charles Irenee du Pont at the Van Dyke home in New Castle, DE. Dorcas Van Dyke was the daughter of a Delaware governor from the Revolutionary War era. Charles I. du Pont was a Brandywine textile manufacturer, farm owner, and bank director.
